Strength:

great sound, good looks, unobtrusive
Like bass?

Weakness:

couldn't say

Listened to them every day for the last 3 weeks-they just keep sounding better-very musical, deep bass, and as much as you want- performers sound as if they're right in front of me in my living room-the built-in powered subwoofers kick ass! They're breaking-in nicely-home theater rocks and music of all types sounds wonderful-the jewels of my system.
I was surprised to discover at the time of purchase that these speakers are made in China (it said so only on the boxes they came in), however, the quality of these speakers is superb-what a value. I currently have them set up with the woofers facing in, toward each other-I'm curious about how they would sound with them facing out and away.

Strength:

Strong Clarity throughout the listening range
Very impressive bass

I got these fairly recently and I was litterly blown away by them. The bass is just utterly amazing, and the value of these speakers is what eventually sold me on them.

Strength:

Big sound.

Weakness:

Looks (black piano gloss finish looks like cheap plastic), powered subwoofer, lack of proper stabilization, powered subwoofer makes speaker location problematic.

I had never even heard of Def Tech until I walked into my dealer. The sound WAS amazing and I told him to wrap up a pair of the BP 2006tls. Boy, was THAT a mistake.

Setting up the speakers was more difficult than necessary. The plastic/wood stabilizer feet provided are of very cheap construction and don't really hold or prevent tipping too well. Then there's the company's failure to drill screw holes into the wooden slots to ease stabilizer insertion. Also, there's that annoying "pop" when the powered subwoofer turns on - they could've at least installed some kind of muting device to correct that problem.

So, I fire up the system and start listening to a variety of music - AC/DC, Led Zep, Matthew Sweet and I'm rockin' - for about 20 minutes or so. I then put on "James Taylor's Greatest Hits" (OK, so I have eclectic musical tastes). All of a sudden, there's this HUGE crackling sound and I hear the woofer blow. I check the fuse - it's black as night, so I replace it. Still, NO response from the woofer. All this from LESS than half an hour of listening right out of the box. BTW, the powered subwoofers were plugged into surge protectors.

I took these right back to the dealer and made my displeasure known - big time. You should note that the manual that accompanies the speakers contemplates that something like this could happen - words to the effect that if the subwoofer power light won't go on or if there's no sound from the subwoofers, take the speaker back to the dealer. I pointed this out to the dealer, told him it could be a design defect, and said I wanted something else. He said: "well, you can't damn the whole company because of a bad pair of speakers - I sell tons of these everyday and I've had no complaints." My Dad, who was with me at the time, summed it up quite well: "a Ford may be a great car, but if you get a lemon, you're gonna want to get a Chevy instead."

Anyway, after checking out the speakers and finding "no problem with the electronics", the dealer agreed to give me a store credit. I upgraded to the B&W Nautilus 804s (yeah, I know, they're A LOT more expensive) and couldn't be happier. I've had it with internally powered subwoofers.

It's true that you get what you pay for. Geez, the company has an answering service which takes its tech support calls and they call you back later. There's no one on staff that you can talk to right away. That should tell you something.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend these speakers and would caution anyone considering these to be very careful. There are much better speakers out there in this price range.

Strength:

Lifelike sound reproduction, classy design, built-in powered subwoofer

Weakness:

Weak cosmetic construction, limited retailers in Houston

To be fair, the Bose and JBL speakers that came before the 2006s didn't really even compare. All things being equal, the 2006s blow them away with ease.

These speakers caught my eye because of their excellent reviews in Home Theater magazine. I work for an audio retailer (http://www.belowretailaudio.com) and we offer MB Quart, Acoustic Research, JBL, etc. for home, but I decided I would pay retail and go with the 2006s locally. In retrospect, I am very pleased with my purchase, though I wonder if I couldn't have spent a lot less and been very satisfied (Acoustic Research, maybe?).

My wife and I watched Gladiator last night and it was nothing short of breathtaking. Some people will knock the built-in powered subs as not a "real" subwoofer, but those people are audiophiles who really are more into sound than most of us will ever be. I was most concerned about using the dual subs without a separate woofer, but man, I am convinced!

Lifelike and clear, the 2006s were a good purchase for me.

Strength:

deep bass and nice soundstage

Weakness:

probably more suitable for HT than musical play

This speaker's got the deepest bass and the best soundstage(due to the bipolar design) in this price point, period. The bass is so deep that you can no longer hear it but to feel it! And the bipolar design gives the best soundstage when comparing to many other speakers in this price range.
As for HT application, 2006tl shines! As for musical play, I don't think it does as good a job as in HT. I think the bass is too deep for classical or jazz kind of music. I don't think there is any musical instrument in a symphony that can produce sound below 40hz...but this speaker will do below 40hz constantly, so I don't think this speaker stay true to the music. But again, if you like to listen to classical music with sub, then you won't regret it.

Strength:

Sound Stage, smooth sound, good bass very punchy!

Weakness:

Not able to play the lowest Bass notes due to woofer size (two 8").

I was at my favorite Def Tech dealer trading in my Pro Cinema 400 system for Two pair of 2002TLs,C/L/R 2002, and a Power Field 15TL. While listening to a pair of 2002TLs I noticed there was a pair of 2006TLs next to the 2002TLs. Well a buddy of mine owns some 2000TLs and was wanting to check out these 2006TLs for a posible rear speaker upgrade. So I had the sales person turn on the 2006TLs. After listening to them using movies and music this is what I noticed. I found the sound stage to be very large and very detailed for two 4 1/2s and two 1" tweeters. The base was very punchy and tight. The sound was very smooth and uniform, however while watching The Matrix (lobby Scene) I found that the 8" subwoofers could belt out all but the lowest Bass notes. Although this is a simple Physics problem (small subs), at an MSRP of $1,200.00 they are great speakers. Now do'nt get me wrong I still bought two pair of 2002TLs for my Home Theater because they do fall very short of performing as good as the 2002TLs. I have owned the Pro Cinema 400s for about a year and I feel the 2006TLs beat the Pro Cinema 400s in evey area for just a little more cash! Great speakers for the price!

Happy Listening Gary Bitters

Strength:

Music, Bass, Sound Stage

Weakness:

Cloth "sock" is attracts lint and dust. Hard to keep clean. Generally, the looks are quite boring. Would like to see an Def Tech come out with an all wood lineup.

Bought these speakers shortly after United Audio (Chicago-land) was bought out by Tweeter Corp. Tweeter dropped the Def Tech line up. Apparently, United Audio was the only store in the Tweeter family who carried Def Tech. So, I got a great deal. 460 ea. for left, center, and right. Even my center has a built in 8" 125 watt sub!

I use the 2006's in conjunction with a Paradigm 2200 12" 250 watt sub. (A great sub by the way.) I feed LFE outs to the sub crossed as low as can. I keep the speaker gain control set at 1 o'clock. So, all but the deepest deeps are handled by the 2006's. The speaker make my small living room sound like a concert hall thanks to the huge sound stage provided by the bipolar disign. I'm planning on buying a pair of 2002tl's for the front and CLR3000 for the center and move my front line up to the rear. Then I can say that every channel in my theater has a sub and therefore can reproduce the entire spectrum of sound.

In terms of "bang for the buck" ie. value - these guys get 5 stars. Overall rating 4.5 Stars. Only because I had to return one of my 2006's to the factory when the occational "poping" sound that other poster complained about turn into a constant "cracking and grating." Even at low volume levels. The factory said it was the subwoofer amp. They replaced at no charge. It's good as new. Thanks DEF TECH.

Strength:

Sound for size, price and placement

We wanted a home theater speaker system for our Pioneer Elite 710 in our 13X18X8 bedroom. Before jumping directly in it may help you in evaluating our opinion to know that we are in our 50's and really enjoy our Martin Logan CLS's in our living room. For our bedroom we wanted something that would sound good for HT, not be too placement dependent, would fit in with our decor and not require a separate sub woofer. We expected to end up with the something like the Def Tech 3000 or at least the 2002. Boy, were we suprised when we went down to audition the alternatives.

We were hoping the 3000's would not be that great. They really are too large for our location. Well they do put out the sound but in our opinion they were too exaggerated in the base to the point of being unpleasant with vocals and music. For HT, however, they really made the Apollo 13 lift off really come to life.

Next we tried the 2004's. Everything fit together. Nothing was excessive. The separation, clarity and placement of vocals and instruments we enjoy with the ML's was there. Not quite as good granted, but very nice indeed. We were particularly impressed with the clarity of the mids. We thought the ML's had superior highs and air but the 2004's were very good for non electrostatic's. For HT they were exceptional. The Apollo 13 lift off was great. Not as knock your socks off as the 3000's but very nice. The room shook and so did our chairs and chest. Quite impressive. We actually preferred the 2004's overall not just for vocals and music but also HT.

Next we tried the 2006's solely because of the great magazine reviews. We went back to the 2004's and 3000's. Back again and again. We could not hear a difference between the 2004's and 2006's. We tried to but it wasn't there for us. The mid's and highs were, in our opinion, exactly the same. Once, we did perceive a slight difference in the subs in the Apollo lift off only but it was in favor of the 2006's.

Bottom line, we purchased the 2006's because we preferred them for our purpose. Cost was a secondary consideration for us. We really did not like the overpowering base in the 3000's and we couldn't tell the 2006's from the 2004's. Give them a try even if you think their dinky 8" sub is merely a toy. You may be suprised as we were. Your mileage of course may vary.

No Magnetic Shielding

I'll make this short. These speakers deserve all the praise other users have given, BUT they the lack of magnetic shielding played rainbow with my direct-view Mitsubishi.
So if you'll have to put these speakers with-in 15 inches of your TV, be careful. It messed up the colors enough that I had to take'em back although very reluctantly. I don't understand how such a modern-kick-ass product could be made without shielding.
