Weakness:

At times harsh highs

For the money, one is not going to find a bettter all around speaker. I originally listened to these speakers quite some time ago. After blowing the tweeters in a cheap pair of KLH's I had I decided it was time to get a "real" speaker. So I had my mind made up and went to Circuit City. I asked the guy to tell me a thing or 2 about them anyway. This is what he said. "This speaker handles the most power of any we carry. It is the most efficient. And it puts out the most bass of any speaker we have." He went on to say that for kicks they some times hook up big fat recievers like harmon kardon or onkyo and try and blow them.

These speakers sound quite clear. Surprisingly the mids and highs come through very well. Sometimes a bit harsh. But that can be expected from a horn tweeter. If you're looking for the ultimate in quality and imaging, well drop 2 grand on a pair of infinity towers, otherwise these will do just fine. A lot of people are big into Cervin Vega's floor speakers. Cervin Vega speakers put out some strong bass and that's about it. Overall they sound like crap to me. This speaker will not only destroy CV in the bass department, it actually has highs and mids that are worthy to listen to.

Strength:

No need for sub. Mellow low range. Loud as hell.

Weakness:

At times weak highs and lost mids. Weigh a ton!

Like everyone else...Circuit City bargain. Was "Just Looking," then I bought them. $150 per. Great deal. Nice to have a bass range again, past used infinity's (great mids and highs, but no bass). Great for jazz and G. Dead. Have then paired up to AR206 HO's and they give a nice warm sound. Problems arise used in Home Theatre. Unless you have a good center channel, you'll lose most mids and highs, unless the volume is loud; in return cranks up the bass which will overpower everything in it's path! Still these speakers are a my pride and joy, there huge, look cool, and are overall impressive. If you get them for a good price, you be glad you bought them. They are easy to match to other brand speakers.

LOUD

The DCM KX-12 series 2 kick. I was about to build my own speakers using Hi-Vi components and build a 3 way speaker box but I'm glad I didn't. I have them matched with a kenwood 107VR reciever. I admit that the mid and treble are a little bit distant when in the same box with a 12" woofer, but the nice thing with the reciever i paired these with finds a nice medium. I at first thought that my reciever didn't have enough bass when connected to the previous speakers and i coulden't up the bass enough with my reciever when tried with many other speakers (Cerwin's, KLH, Infinity,) when these were hooked up to my reciever it was a perfect match. And with the addition of a midrange level control thru the reciever it was perfect. bass set to 0 gain and mid an treble set at +2 and every thing is much clearer and very loud. I picked these up at Circut City cheap, open box. the back corner of one was damaged so it cost me a small $125 for one speaker and the other was 150 with no damage. the down side is that i have these in a dorm room so the neighbors get a little bit ticked off when i run these. they are also cleaner at simmilar volume to some guys Cerwin 15"'s and still hold their own in loudness. I would highly recommend these if your on a budget or even if you are compairing any of the others mentioned.

Strength:

Play loud and clean, go deep

Weakness:

Not the best for HT

I recently had all of my A/V equipment stolen, which included a pair of DCM KX-212s. At first I wondered if I could truly replace these monsters with dual 12" cones (they are basically KX-12s with a second 12") I talked to a DCM rep, who suggested I go with 2 KX-12s and 2 powered DCM subs. My insurance replacement policy restricted me to like products, so I figured I would give it a shot. Let me say I am extremely impressed with the results! The KX-12s DO play loud and deep, but by themselves they cant even touch the KX-212s. The addition of 2 active subs really pushed them above the KX-212s.

I agree with those who say they dont sound as good as NHT or B&W (and yes, ive heard them side by side) but I dont think that warrents giving them such a low rating. Im a college student and I have a mid-range HT system that cost a small fraction of a high end setup but sounds 90% as good and can still handle whatever CDs I throw at it in 2 channel. And for $199 each... these KX-12s are a great buy.

Strength:

These speakers are perfect for someone who wants it LOUD with strong bass.

Weakness:

Frequency response drops off a little higher than my Rockford Fosgate subs, but you'll never notice it in every day music/movie listening. It's only when playing bass CDs that you can hear (or more importantly not hear) the tone loss. Other than that these speakers are the biggest bang-for-the-buck I've seen since the Yamaha NS-A638.
Everyone mentions how they're huge...well, they're big, but that's not usually too much of a problem unless you live in a 10'x10' dorm room. Unfortunately, I'll be moving back into one of those soon so I am looking to sell mine.

Great speakers that will take a pounding. Wouldn't hesitate to buy used since the chances of blowing these speakers with anything under $2000 driving it is slim to none.

This is an amendment to a previous review

In my previous review I mentioned the tone loss in very low bass frequencies. The truth is, I'm an idiot. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting those really low tones, so I tried bypassing my receiver and going straight through an amp. Well, they kicked! It turns out I had my Onkyo set to use a sub so it was filtering the bass on my fronts.
Anyways, just thought I should clear that up.

Strength:

Very loud, very efficient, very cool looking.

Weakness:

Very loose bass, harsh high-end, midrange bottoms out when turned up, large footprint

I reviewed these speakers once before, after owning them for a short time, and gave them a perfect score. I would now like to change my vote. At the time, I listened mainly to rap and electronic music, and they sound great with that. However, I now listen to rock, heavy metal, classic rock, etc. The boomy bass makes double bass kicks sound like one continuous rumble. The cymbals are harsh. Midrange is almost lost. I also had a very poor receiver at the time, and now have a better (but still not very good) Aiwa Dolby Digital receiver, and these speakers sound like crap with anything remotely musical. At anything past half volume, the sound quality is horrible. Imaging is nonexistant. For teenagers who want to annoy their neighbors, buy these. I have a pair of $50 KLH 12" 3-ways in acoustic suspension enclosures, the sound quality is VASTLY better. And they play louder, although with less bass. Overall, these speakers are *semi-decent* for the price, if all you care about is volume.
