Strength:

Killer sound at a great value!

Weakness:

They don't make them anymore (Help us out here Regnar!)

I had these speakers for several years before upgrading to Mirage M1-si's. They are very detailed and a good value for the $. The other reviews say it all. I ended up giving them to my Mom for Christmas one year and after 15 years of solid daily listening the woofer surrounds gave up the ghost. Needless to say, my Mom was highly bummed out. What to do? Regnar to the rescue!! These guys bought the Dahlquist name and are servicing their speakers. The repaired the woofers quickly and economically and were the greatest to deal with for an experirnced audiophile (me) and a new convert (Mom). The speakers sound terrific!! Joe and the gang at their service dept. deserve a real pat on the back. If you see a pair of these for sale do not hesitate to buy them because they can be serviced and serviced well. Good job Regnar!

Strength:

No speaker is perfect regardless of cost but I think the DQ-20''s gets you close for less.

Weakness:

When compared to other speakers fewer all the time.

Been A Dahlquist fan forever. Had two sets of DQ-10''s.(upgraded when they mirror imaged them.) Then Sold those in favor of the DQ-20''s. To me the 20''s are a much better speaker as the quality of the drivers(scan-speak mid and upper) and cross-overs increased markedly. For me one of the great bargains in Hi-Fi just got better. My friends and I are all bi-amping these with Aragon 8002''s(lucky find for little $) and the bass is stunning. No more slow tub thumping bass in need of a sub-woofer. These are now stand alone high-end speakers that I don''t think you could duplicate for less than 5 or 10 G''s. In fact the mid''s and tweet''s used in the DQ-20''s are still manufactured and used in some of the highest quality speakers made. It just took the added power to realize that the woofer was of the some quality only more demanding. Even a used and abused pair can be completely rebuilt at regnar.com

Strength:

Imaging, detail, tonal balance, soundstage.

Weakness:

low end bass. a subwoofer should help on this end.

I remember listening to the original dahlquist dq10s'
at a hi-fi show as a teenager in the early 1970s'
Well the dq20's have all the great sound of the dq10s'
in a much more attractive package! I acquired them used about 6 months ago, they needed some work, the tweeters
were blown, the grill cloth on one had come loose, and alot of dust had collected in the back cage. Upon doing some inquiring I found out about Regnar.com whose specialty is dahlquist. ( Also it is run by the people of the original
service dept. Joe is the one who helped me and he can answer all your questions.) Well back to the speakers! These speakers are a revelation. IN the time I've had them I been stunned by anything I've played through them. In short I think If I had to replace these speakers I would have to spend I couple of thousand dollars and still not match these for imaging, clarity, and realistic sound! If you can find a pair in good condition, at a good price grab them you won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Neutrality

Weakness:

Bass, image. size, efficiency

One weekday morning I lugged my (then currently owned) Infinity speakers to a local audio store along with several CDs. I would listen to them for a couple of minutes then connect a candidate pair and listen to them (the store people were very considerate and didn't bother me). I listened to several systems / brands large and small; each over and over so as to assure myself of the differences (I knew well what I liked and disliked in the Infinity). After listening to the DQ-20s I immediately fell in love with them. Eventually, I felt the bass was somewhat weak, the efficiency lower than desired and the soundstage (a bit) smaller than desirable even after considerable placement experimentation. I had them 5 years until I moved and their size was impractical for my new surroundings.

Strength:

Imaging, transparency, full sound don't know what you would need a sub for. The bass is nice and tight and peppy.

Weakness:

None.

I bought these speakers 3 years ago and overpaid a little for them. They are in pristine condition and the surrounds are still okay. I am thinking of upgrading the crossovers via Regnar but am afraid to mess with something great. I love these speakers and have listened to many other speakers and still love the sound of the DQ20s. I would suggest that anyone who can get a deal like a pair of them for $500 do it immediately. I will be keeping mine for a long long time. To replace them would cost me several thousand dollars and the only speakers I've heard that sound anything like them for that price neighborhood are the Martin Logan Sequel 3s (I think that's them 10" and panels) (which have a better midrange but not as tight a bass), Thiel's - well there are a lot of good speakers but few that your going to get for $1200 for the pair that are going to sound like the DQ 20s. About this subwoofer thing - what are you using to drive them? I have the GFA 565 monoblock adcom amps and preamp and I have no problemws with the bass. Basically, if you don't like the DQ20s, you should go back to Radio Shack and buy your speakers there.

Strength:

Phenominal soundstage and imaging, smooth midrange, & transparent high end. They are still good looking too.

Weakness:

Light bottom end, large size, low impedence (4) A sub is a must.

From the first moment I auditioned these wonderful speakers I was hooked. The imaging and wonderful soundstage of the DQ20's is indeed a treat. I am driving them with a Yamaha DSPA1000 (120wpc into 4 ohms). While the Yahama does a very nice job, I am getting the itch to upgrade my amp. Since I rarely use the DSP on my amp, I am considering selling it and moving up a notch. The special effects on the amp are "fun", but I much prefer straight stereo with the DQ20's. Any of the DSP effects simply take away from the image itself. Only problem is, I may have to sell my DQ20's. My home is too small and with 2 small kids..... This will be a very sad day for me. So if anyone knows another loudspeaker that can do what the DQ20's can do, and is a bookshelf/sattelite type, please let me know. I have a small sub (M&K MX70) that does a terrific job. As for my satisfaction, there is simply no doubt about it. These babies are diamonds.

Strength:

Neutrality, detail, styling

Weakness:

Inefficiency

I picked these speakers up used for $500, which turns out to be an absolute steal. When I got them, there were a few problems due to their age. The woofers needed new surrounds, the old ones were foam and had rotted with age. Also, one of the tweeters was bad, which I replaced easily since the tweeter is still in production.

Once I got these things going, the sound was fantastic. They are very neutral and reproduce sound very faithfully. I did not find the bass lacking, and would be very happy with these even without a subwoofer.

I have heard many speakers here and there, in my possession, in the stores, and these speakers are definitely some of the best I have heard. I consider these very near reference quality, and agree that one would have to spend probably $3000 to get a new pair that matches their sound. Well, since this is close to what the DQ20's cost originally, maybe that is understandable.

The only drawback to these speakers is that they are fairly inefficient and the impedance runs a little low I believe. With most good equipment, this shouldn't be a problem though.

If you can find these used for a good price, I would definitely recommend them. You can't go wrong. Before I got mine working, I was planning on selling them once I fixed them up, but am so impressed with the sound, I will be keeping them for myself.
