Strength:

Tight base.
Good mid range to highs.
High power rating 400W
Excellent sensitivity 102db
Very nice dynamic sound and imaging when powered with a clean high powered amp.

Weakness:

Stuff keeps falling off my shelves, pictures get knocked off the walls and various plaster cracks throughout the house, lol.

I'm more of a traditional audiophile in older speaker designs. So many of the new high end towers out there sport excellent clarity but lack base response needing a separate subwoofer to compensate, they just don't move air like these babies can. All around sound quality of these speakers are pretty well balanced for what they are priced at. They may not be audiophile especially for those types with their ears focused on Beethoven or Bach. But for music that most everyday people listen to (rock, rap, dance, easy listening) they perform very well. Mind you when pushed hard they are a lot of fun, That pounding punch that hits you! I get nothing but good remarks on these speakers when having house parties.
They don't need a lot of power to make these cats purr due to the 102db sensitivity but under powering E715's is not recommended, these speakers could cause a small amp to clip thus damaging the speaker. I originally started out feeding them with 100W per channel using a Yamaha receiver but then upgraded to 2 NAD C272 amplifiers bridged in mono each feeding them 300W per channel and all I have to say is...... oh my god! These Vegas just come alive the more power you feed them. They play hard, clean and distortion free.

Strength:

Bass is in phase and proper location to image ....separate subs are never right.

phasing/matching of drivers is unbelievable

Will treat your ears with high quality program sources

Weakness:

Will reveal defects and flaws, recording artifacts...not the fault of the speaker system

I am an electircal engineer and want transcription /perfect reproduction of program sources.

I use Crown CE2000, 900watts per channel, and studio pre-amps to drive from sources.

The Cerwin Vega E-715's are the first speakers that clearly reveal the sizzle of recording artifacts.

For instance on Celtic air pipe recording there is perfectly produced IM distortion interaction on the microphones used to record the instrument....the tweeters and mid-range perfectly reproduced these flaws in the source, which requires extreem driver speed, rise and fall times, and extreem sensitivity.

Audiophile speakers tend to mask this and are more musical to the ear, however the Cerwin Vega E-715's reveal the quality or lack thereof in the source program. The only thing I want to hear is the source in its ugly truth or meticulous recording methods, I do not want tube sound unless it is on the source, when I play Byrds tube recorded stuff it comes through perfectly, if I play Heart I get the IM compression and harsh sound. There is no room in my house for any equipment that colors sound, and you cannot have enough efficiency in the drivers with highest amplifier head room.

Too Bad G. Cerwinski passed away, I sincerely hope that Cerwin Vega will continue to produce Helmholtz tuned vented large displacement speakers. When you go to a concert you will be listening to the live pereformance through CV's over the years and this is what is laid down on the recording, why would not anyone want to listen to the live performance through the drivers produced by the Company that builds the stage equipment. Many people fail to realize tha CV recieved Emmy award for Theater sound systems.

CV keep building the cast alum spider that does not reduce the gauss density around the voice coils and allows the tightest gaps and the woofers, and oversized gauss density on tweeters and mid-ranges, ans separate tunes volumes for midrange and sealed back tweeters, and conformal coated communication grade cross overs.

I had a pair of CV Model 26's from 1970...best available at the time regardless of cost....E-715's will turn suedo audiophile speakers in-side out...a bargain...but will cause structural damage to any home. Listen carefully....enjoy.

Strength:

Tight base
Excellent Vocals

Weakness:

Plaster walls in my house crack,
Picture frames fall over,
etc....

I did my research and read many reviews on these speakers, don't listen to the critics! These speakers put out some excellent accoustics. The bass is very clean and tight not fluttery, but mostly I was very surprised on how excellent the midrange to high's sound. I played some Andrea Boccelli on these and the vocal clarity that came out was unbelievable, kills my old Bose speakers. Yes, the bass in these Vegas are plaster cracking thunderous! The great thing is that if you don't want them to pump out thunder just turn the bass down on your amp/receiver, but it feels nice to know that the bass is always there if you want it. Not like most high end towers that have great clarity but don't even come close to the bass characteristics that these Vegas are capable of. I'm an audio buff and listened to many expensive high end speakers that don't come close to these in sound quality for the price. The 102db sensitivity allows these to play nice and smooth at low volume. I highly recommend the E-715's, you will not be dissapointed.

Strength:

.. if there is any words other than 'The Best' i'll add!

Weakness:

only one thing.. and this isn't even a weakness. Is the size/weight. of course, i do NOT mind nor should any actual sound enthusiasts.

I will not UNDERSTATE to the awesome power handling of these speakers.. nor their crystal clear sound even @ high points of wattage. As a night club dj, I cannot stress enough, how these speakers work CIRCLES around any othe home based speakers. in my 38 years od life, not one time have i EVER come across a speaker with such - solid - stability.I purched mine from a friend who (at the time) need some extra cash to make a car loan payment (long in which I will not go). I paid $100.00 for the pair, in mint condition.. without even listening to them one time. I cannot emphasize the awesome'ness if the CV E-715 series. I've tried to lookup the date these were released. I have DJed for many years, trvaeling across the country. Visiting peolple.. and not one time.. and i mean ONE TIME, have I ever heard a home speaker service that is/was remotley close the the reprocduction of almost every frequency. To wrap this review up.. You'll never experience such sound reproduction from any speaker system.. ESO, the bass.. wheeew.

a 101% review from here.

Never had any problem with any thing its still sounds like brand new when I bought it form Future Shop. I use HK AVR 300 I think its a good combinition I live in apt, and I wish one day when i buy a house I can blast it all the way volume in AVR goes to -64 db to +10 db since I bought this unit I mean speakers & AVR I could only go to -20 which is way too loud for an apt at -20db I can feel my couch is shaking I DO NOT use any subwoofer, so I try to stay by -45 which is normal and my neibhour doent complain that my music knocked his picure down for the wall :-) so I m a good neighour now.

I knew they had to be be bad. They are the only ones that haven't blown up do to Angus Young. They put out the best quality sound at any level. No distortion. These baby's will let youknow exactly why you bought them ! Strength:

Very solid and well built speaker. High sensitivity, works good even on low power amps, don't have to spend tons for great sound on an amp.

Weakness:

Heavy, your house rattles, things fall over. If you use a low power amp and push your amp to the point it distorts it may damage the speakers, they are set up mainly for clean sound. Power handling is a max of 400 watts.

I have installed car systems as a hobby for quite awhile and am very picky about good sound, good bass, clean highs and a mid that sounds good but won't make your ears bleed unless at very high volume. I advise everyone if they can afford it to atleast go with infinity kappa. These Vega's are comparable to the kappa's, even though they are home audio. After 7 years of major power abuse they still blow peoples minds, they come over saying their Boston Accoustics tower speakers will outperform mine, then they leave scratching their head asking where can I get some. I'm pushing my E-715's with a high current Harmon-Kardon system and the sound is amazingly clear with bass you feel and clean crisp highs, no matter what volume you push them at. Bose? good for a small speaker out of sight, but you won't feel it.

Strength:

As loud as a person could EVER want in a house. (102db with 1 watt) Deep bass for movies (make great front speakers for surround system) and certain songs (down to about 24hz) Crystal clear and accurate with my receiver at max (400 watts RMS) Seeing the look on a person's face when you pop off the cover and they see the red surround on that 15" woofer. Piece of mind knowing you can't hurt them (Fuse protection and tweeter shut off)

Weakness:

The dang thing weighs over 80lbs. ports aren't flared (but they are huge, dual 4 inch) center and mid aren't centered treble and mid boost isn't needed if you have a decent receiver

The Cerwin Vega E-715 is one solid performer. People like to say that it is inaccurate but that is not the case. They are just jealous because their wife makes them buy puny slender towers with 6 1/2 inch woofers. They have to come up with some excuse for their terrible bass performance. I've taken these speakers apart and looked at the drivers. The 15 is SOLID and has a cast basket with hefty magnet. The mid is in a separate box and the tweeter has a huge magnet for such a small driver. The inside of the box is lined with some sort of stuffing. These speakers love anything that you put through them. I'm running a Yamaha HTR 5830 and it's one of Yamaha's low-end receivers. It claims to put out 110 watts but it's probably more like 50 to each side in stereo mode. That is enough for these speakers to rock the house (the room is 20X35). They don't break up or distort at ear-crushing levels. This speaker's favorite foods are rock, rap, techno, and any other music one likes to play at LIVE levels. I also listen to Jazz, Classical, and other soft sorts of music. This is the area where the skinny speaker guys like to say their stuff is better, BUT IT IS NOT. The Vega's will play this music beautifully. They also have the ability to fill any room with the instrumental solos and such. Most speakers can't handle that type music at such high DB levels with NO BREAKUP.

Customer Service

No problems. Answered my e-mail questions quick.

Strength:

Nothing can touch them in bass. Very faithful in reproduction. Love to be played as loud as your amp will go. They sound better the louder you go... Quality construction.

Weakness:

You WILL get complaints. These make you rethink hanging pictures up...

If you know anything about home audio, all I have to say is: Cerwin-Vega! My father back in 1995 bought a pair of VS-120's. I blasted those speakers more then he did, and fell head over heals for Cerwin-Vega. A dream of mine was to own the VS-150's. So in building my new setup, I knew CV was the way to go and got the E-715's. As someone stated, these are "real speakers." I don't care what Bose will have you believe (and I've heard plenty of their equipment), there is NO replacement for displacement. The high quality, and very accurate 15" woofer on these bad boys move some SERIOUS air. If you've got a good amp (I'm powering them on my Sony STR-DE997 @ 110WPC) you can really hurt your hearing. And don't listen to anyone when they say these speakers have poor imaging. I listen to everything but Country, and they bring it all to life. My Classical SACD's sound like I'm really there. These speakers faithfully reproduce everything from the bass drums to the chimes. Lets not get into Techno...I have the capability to bring the house down with some Chemical Brothers, DJ Rap, Xploding Plastix, or anything similar. Dream Theater has NEVER sounded so good. My Billie Holiday SACD sounds perfect. I'm actually looking into buying an amp that can push ~300WPC to see what these can REALLY do. I can shake everything at only 110 watts, so I can't imagine some real power. Speaking of power, I wouldn't recommend pushing these with anything less then 100 watts. These speakers have great sensitivity (102dB) and will sound great with a small amp, but you'll be doing yourself a disservice. And for those of you with good amps, the FIRST thing you need to do when you get these puppies out of the box is replace the 2.5amp factory fuse with at least a 3amp. I blew my right fuse in under a week. One thing I can't stand is people complaining about their size. Again, as stated, a real speaker should have some girth. I actually LOVE their size. These look damn good by my entertainment center. Your friends will walk in, see these, and know your setup isn't a joke. These are big speakers that produce big sound, period. These are some of the few speakers you really don't need a subwoofer to produce the lowest of lows. In conclusion, there is no speaker in this class (and possibly some more exspensive) that can even come close to these. They are very accurate, and can punch you in the chest. The bass is tight and hard. The mids a damn good. The highs are crisp and clean. I've always felt that CV is a VERY underrated brand. When you get your pair, you'll know why.

Strength:

Old fashioned design means great bass. Fairly accurate compared to competition. High quality parts and construction.

Weakness:

Cabinet footprint is quite large.

Just a little advice; these are the last "real" speakers made by a quality manufacturer. Any salesperson who tries to tell you that multiple 6" or 8" woofers are equal to a 15" is wrong. I went to many showrooms listening to Polk, JBL, Infinity and Cerwin-Vega over and over. The sound quality of the Cerwins edged out all others in the different types of music I listen to. Everyone else is building speakers a new way that they claim is better with multiple small woofers. I do not like the idea of having to buy a separate subwoofer with my $800 speakers as some salesmen suggested because they cannot produce enough bass on their own. Before you judge a product to be poor you need to listen to it compared to other competing products. You cannot find anything in this price range without some weaknesses.
