SOLID BASS THE SOCK LOOK ACTUALLY GREW ON ME .

Weakness:

MID-RANGE IS ALITTLE WEEK ON ROCK

PURCHASED FIRST SET FROM A STORE IN PA. AND HAD TO PICK THEM UP IN NJ. WHEN I GOT THERE THE BOXES HAD BEEN OPEN AND SEALED . THEY WHERE BOUGHT AS NEW . I TOOK THEM HOME THE PACKING WAS TERRIBLE . I SENT A FEW HOURS RUNNING WIRES UNDER THE FLOOR , HOOKED THEM UP AND EITHER TWEETER OR TOP MID-RANGE WORKED . CALLED THE STORE THEY TOOK THEM BACK , THESE SPEAKERS ACTUALLY HAD NO MODEL NUMBER ON THE BOTTOM ,
THANK GOD THEY DIDN'T WORK OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK WITH THEM . HANDLING THESE IS NOT THE EASIEST . THE NEW ONES WORK GREAT , I REALLY LIKE THE LOOK , GREAT FOR MUSIC , UNBEIVABLE FOR HOME THEATER . I WOULD RECOMMEND BUY ONLY FACTORY SEALED SPEAKERS OFF OF A LOCAL DEALER BECAUSE THEY ARE KINDA FRAGILE , AND WOULD ALSO SAY NO DEMOS .THE PRICE MIGHT BE RIGHT BUT AFTER YOU CARRY THESE SPEAKERS AROUND
YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN .

I upgraded to these speakers during a big sale at the audio store. I had already owned the Boston PV600 subwoofer and I love it. I listened to about 4 different speaker systems and the VR975 had by far the best sound for the money.
The highs are very clear with a nice clean powerful bass.
With the powered sub built into the 975's and my Pioneer Elite VSX27TX Reciever I get all the sound I'll ever need.
It's a little odd that these are the Top of the Line Bostons while other companies have speakers far above the 1600.00 MSRP of the Bostons. Anyway they have incredible sound and for the price range nothing else even comes close.

Wanted to resubmit review now that they are broken in.

Weakness:

None

OK, got them broken in and added the VR920 center. The high end went from being a bit harsh to mellowing out, much smother. Low end is a bit scary. Had my neighbor over for a listen, his wife and friends were next door at a bon fire with a boom box playing loud. My house is very well insulated. Tod is now trying to convince his wife to buy a pair too.
Side note, when we went back to the party he told his wife to come over and listen to them, she told us that not only did she "hear" them over the music they had on, but everyone there "felt" them too. Not bad with a reciever. Would not give these speakers up for anything. I am totally happy with this purchase. We are now planning on movie nights on Saturdays. Hope they bring the beer.

Sound, Sound and More Sound

Weakness:

Size, Only the hieght-- Still looks good

Looked at a few speakers including Mission MS 983 and Mordaunt Short 908....

Went out to buy the VR 950 , mainly to use as a Surround for my VR 960. Heard the VR 975, was offered a price hard to refuse. Bought them.

Connected to my system, welcome to another planet. They are powerful, great bass and picks up everything. They leave the VR 960 for dead (I sat there switching betweeen them)... The VR 960 is a great speaker also, it's just that the VR 975 puts Music and Movies to another level.

I was planning to sound proof my room, now I have the greatest excuse in the world to do so these speakers are powerful, clean and clear , high ..low and in between

With home theatre the VR 975 grabs your ears and pulls them right into the movie (hello Pleasantville). Go beautifully with the Centre VR12. Welcome to the New Level of Audio..............

Strength:

Looks, sound quality, mostly everything

Weakness:

I wish these would have had removable grills, rather than the socks.

I don't have a lot of places around where I live to audition different brands of speakers. The only reason I knew of the 975's existence was on this website. I virtually bought them on reputation and price range alone!
I was a little afraid I might have some packaging problems I've heard about from other reviewers, so I had the store take them out of the box and hook them up before buying them. The sound room was at least 3 times as large as my living room, so I was almost disapointed with these when I first heard them...plus, I couldn't get a moment alone with them becuase of other rude customers. In my living room these speakers are extremely impressive. They are in NO WAY too bright. They are very neutral and seem to disappear. I don't spend a lot of time analyzing their sound because they are just...well, "pleasant" to listen to.

I was a little alarmed at first when I got them, however. I originally hooked them up with just speaker wire only. Then I used my LFE output on my Sony ES receiver. These things had WAY TOO much bass. I'm not sure if they're supposed to have such a difference in bass between the two different hookups, but they sure do for me! I now have the woofer levels turned completely ALL the way down and the amount of bass is still almost too much...music OR movies. On the "Titan AE" DVD I had to turn down my LFE channel to half!

I am extremely happy with my choice. So much, in fact, that I'm saving up to buy some Boston surrounds to go with them.

Strength:

The most extended, smmothest high frequency response I've ever heard in a speaker. I'm hearing details I never knew existed in my CD's!!! Smooth Midrange. Deep & accurate bass!!!

Weakness:

To be honest with you, NONE!!! Some people may consider them too bright but I think it's just accurate high treble that they're not accustomed to usually hearing...

I just picked these up today @ Audio King after trading my Boston VR950's in for them. The sales person was super cool...he gave me 90% of the original value of my 950's & PLUS took 10% off these to boot...which is something considering I owned the speakers I traded in for almost TWO YEARS!!! Seriously folks, I've been into High Fi for over 10 years, & there aren't any speakers I know of that match the clarity of the 975's!!! The similar products I've used listed above all came close but not quite matching these!!!
Anyway, I was apprehensive about unpacking them as I read all the previous problems you guys were having with receiving them damaged. I thought the packing quality was fairly good!!!
After testing out almost 1/5 of my CD collection, my ears are hurting, and I wasn't even playing them that loud (AND CAN'T DAMMIT as I live in an apartment complex!!!) My best test disc is the Metallica "Black" Album from '91 because it's got Bob Rock producing, who loves his low bass and top treble on his albums. I recommend setting the subwoofer contol to the "10 O'Clock" position to get the most accurate response. UNBELIEVABLE CLARITY!!! I honestly think this will be my LAST speaker upgrade ever. Anyone wishing the best possible clarity from their favorite recordings should at least consider these speakers!!!

Strength:

Loud, Loud, Loud. And Clean

Weakness:

Big, heavy. Boring cabinetry

These are hooked to a Pioneer Elite 24TX receiver. (Is this coincidence that many other reviewers here are powering these with Pioneer Elites?)
As this is my first 'power' tower, I can only compare to non power setups.
My previous setup was NHT SuperTwos plus a SW2P sub. The 975s blow this combination away in any moderate listening level and up. At low volumes, the Boston's still have an edge, albeit a very slim one.
I've been an NHT fan for life (and will remain so) but I've also had a fondness for Boston (my car and computer is all BA). For the price, NHT is just behind the 975's. I've heard higher end NHTs (2.5i, 3.3,etc) and it is just as good if not a tad better but alas, you'll have to sport near twice the bucks too.
I already have Boston VRSPros for surrounds and will be looking to add the center channel at some point too.
I can't complain for stereo or Theater. These monoliths make me grin nicely so far!

Strength:

Outstanding Sound Imaging and clarity - Deep tight bass with incredible mid-range for Vocal clarity and astonishing tweeter sound.

Weakness:

Packing from the factory does not adequatley protect the speakers in shipment! Black sock that covers the speaker has a bad design that allows the tightening string to fall out and rip out the stitching.

This is an update to my saga below. After one week I had Audio King re-order a new set of speakers. After setting them up in my room - I once again dropped the sock to see that actual speakers - this time there was again damage to the right speaker. There were horizontal scratches across the paint in multiple places. Looked like they were either dropped at the factory or took some abuse in shipment. The speakers played fine - and I was able to touch up the marks so they did not visually appear through the sock. There was no sign of high resonance or Woofer problems as I experienced with my first set.

Also on the left speaker there was damaged stiching where the cord runs through to tighten the sock around the speakers. Again - this sock is poorly designed and the cord can easily pull out of the sock.

Despite these annoying faults - the speakers sound absolutely incredible! I'm going to work out a deal from Audio King to get another discount for the flaws and keep these speakers.

I'm going to up my rating to 4 stars as I still think Boston needs to work on the Sock and shipping issues. The sound of the speakers is a high "5" rating.

Other than these faults - I would highly recommend these speakers but would check them out in the store prior to bringing them home.

Strength:

Good overall sound with even distribution of bass.

Weakness:

Sound was not clean compared to other speakers.

I bought three sets of speakers: Bose 701 ($849.00, Best Buy), Klipsch KLF 30 Towers ($1575.00 local), and the Boston VR 975 ($1550.00 local). For the rear, I bought a pair of Bose Double Cube Speakers (red line, new, off e-bay, $215.00) and the Klipsch KSP-S6 surrounds ($500.00 local dealer). I decided to try each with my system: Pioneer Elite VSX-26TX, Pioneer DV626D (DVD-CD), Boston VR-12 center channel, and the Pioneer SW-200 subwoofer. I tried each with every possible pairing of the speakers both with and without the separate subwoofer. Without question, the best sounds for DVD’s and CD's were from the Bose 701 speakers and the Bose Double Cube speakers in the rear.

Since I had all of these products I ask some of my friends to listen. Many of my friends are audiophiles. They, like many people who write on this forum, hate Bose. I wanted their option, but I didn’t want it biased by product lines. So, we did blind tests (i.e., each could not see what speakers were playing and rated the combinations for me). I had five of my friends do this and we had so much fun that each brought five additional people to do the sound test. The movies used were U-571 and Matrix. CD’s were Creed, Cher, and Classical Hits, 2000, Varity Bach. The receiver was set on large speakers for front, large for center, and small for rear-Bose, small and large for Klipsch, and cutoff at 80 Hz for the subwoofer.

The winning combination, using my receiver, DVD/CD player, subwoofer, and center speaker, was the Bose 701 with the Bose cube speakers. 23 out of 25 people picked the Bose combination. 25 out of 25 picked the Bose double cubes for the rear. Isn’t that something? When people couldn’t see what speakers were playing, mostly all picked Bose. People swore they were picking either the Boston’s or the Klipsch’s, depending on what they thought was the best product, and in most cases, the Bose 701 with the Bose Double Cubes were picked. The other surprising result was that the Pioneer SW-200 was picked easy over the Boston’s with the built in subwoofers given every possible combination. The pioneer was picked as cleaner and deeper bass.

This was a fun weekend for all of us. However, in the end, I took the Boston’s and Klipsch’s back. I got in writing that each were returnable before I did this (the Bose Double Cubes were going in the den if I didn’t like them as the rear speakers). It appears that a better manner to determine what speakers you actually like and do not like is to make sure you can’t see what speakers are being used. Your ears and not your eyes judge.

I do love the sound I get from the 701’s. The Double Cube’s in the rear are awesome. With the subwoofer, the bass is super clear (but it is good without too), the highs are clean and not annoying (the Klipsch were harsh), and the middle was pleasant.

You can’t go wrong with these speakers and they don’t cost an arm and a leg to own them (they sell for around $535.00 average on E-Bay or $850.00 new). The sound is so good you’ll turn them on just to listen to them. This was a fun experiment and my buddies, and their friends, still can’t believe they picked Bose. I had fun and am very happy with my system. Get the Bose 701’s, they hold up to speakers costing twice as much.
