Strength:

Clear and crisp sound, great highs and middles with good bass, elegant design

Weakness:

None worth mentioning

Great value for your money. I tried in the store some Bose, B&O and Mission (Sorry, forgot the models but none were bookshelf) in similar price ranges (CA$950-CA$1300).

What really atracted me was the clarity of sound reproduction at middle and high ranges, coupled with a great bass response. At times, the sound may be a bit "bright" for some listeners, but it doesn't really bothers me.

Strength:

Highs are incredible, Overall a very clear speaker

Weakness:

None

I just aquired these speaker the other day updating my polk which i was not all that happy with (that is my opinion not to put down polk by no means...) These things sound incredible i cannot believe the things i could not hear before that these pick up, the bass responce is quite impressive as well. If you find a set give them a listen you will understand. Boston is simply in my opinion the BEST...

P.S Thanks to Dave Dorey for the recommodation of Colony Home Theater they treated my extremely well...

Strength:

Accuracy, clarity

Weakness:

Best used with a subwoofer

These speakers continue in the Boston tradition of accurately reproducing sound. The "Lynnfield VR" tweeter renders the high frequencies in a very smooth manner. The dual 5-1/4" low-frequency drivers (I can't bring myself to call them woofers) produce more bass than I expected when I first sat down to listen to these speakers. The midrange is detailed and smooth as well.

I don't agree that these speakers suffer from a lack of bass when one considers that we're talking about 5-1/4s here! These babies certainly get well down into the 50Hz range. That said, a sub is most definitely recommended. I think it's clear that Boston designed these speakers to be used with a sub. If you don't want a separate sub, get the VR-970s instead. Personally, I'll go for the separate approach over a "powered tower". I think a VR-950+sub sounds cleaner than the VR-970 alone, and there's definitely more LFE punch on DVDs with a good sub!

Esthetically, these speakers take up very little floorspace with their narrow fronts. The tower design may save you a bit of cash that you'd have to otherwise spend on stands. The speaker is covered in a black cloth sock from top to bottom, and it presents an elegant appearance.

I recommend these speakers heartily, especially if you can get them at a discount from the $700 list. Even at list, though, they beat the competition in terms of quality for the dollar.

Strength:

mid-range, highs,

Weakness:

bass not too tight

I have bought a pair of these speakers several months ago and have been quite happy with them. I bought them because they were supposed to be good for both music and home threatre. And they are. Though I haven't yet bought the surround or centre speakers, using the VR950 for movies turns out good sound and clear enough dialogue from the two front speakers alone. But I use them mostly to listen to music and there they perform very well. Clear but warm sound, great mid-range and tingling highs. You also get a lot of bass from these slender speakers. It's not as tight and one would have liked though. But don't get me wrong, nothing horrendously loose here. There are many speakers that sound better than the VR950s, but I dare say none in the same price range. Indeed the price jump for just a little improvement on these speakers is shocking huge.
P.S. Use spikes or tiptoes under the speakers. It will improve the sound clarity and bass extension. Also toe them in a little.

Strength:

Crisp highs, small footprint.

Weakness:

tippy

I have had these speakers for about a month and I'm very impressed. The highs are more crisp than any comparably priced speaker I've heard, and the base is decent and very clean. I haven't had any problems with popping, etc. These would pair up awesomely with a subwoofer if you don't live in an apartment like me. Only problem I've noticed is not sound related; the speakers tend to tip to the side. They can be fastened however, which would also improve the bass, and I love the speaker's small footprint anyway. Also have a VR10 center and VRS surrounds. Incredible with Dolby Digital DVDs.

Strength:

Super clean highs and tight bass.

Weakness:

None worth mentioning

I purchased these along with a VR12 center channel and a VR500 sub. I use an older set of BA SubSat 6's for rear surrounds. The two surround speakers flank each end of the couch facing up off the floor, and the passive sub is centered directly behind the couch. The wall gets "washed" with sound during rear effects and the 5-channel stereo of my Denon 2700 sounds phenomenal. DVD movies like Armageddon rock the whole house - and without any distortion, and music CD's sound crisp and clean. I'm happy!

Strength:

These speakers handle more power and sound much cleaner than any other speaker that I have ever owned

Weakness:

They are expensive, but I was able to overlook this problem with the quality of sound that is produced.

Overall, Boston Acoustic speakers are the best audio components that I have encountered. The many people that I have talked to agree with me, in that, they feel that they are the greatest speaker on the market today.

I have compared 950's with Polk Audio & other loud speakers and found a huge difference in sound quality for the price range($600pr). Excellent value for the money.

These speakers for the price are unbeatable. The build quality is fantastic for the price. Sound is smooth and warm and least when coupled with my receiver (Denon 2800). Looked at many other brands when purchasing these. These included NHT, B&W, KEF, and Infinity..

Strength:

Excellent highs and mids with a sleek look.

Weakness:

Bass is lacking unless you crank up the volume.

For the money these speakers are the best in the market. They need power to run them otherwise the bass gets a little messy at high volumes. But with enough juice, they don't have any of the popping problems that some reviewers have complained about. One thing that is a must for these speakers is a subwoofer because they don't produce the really low bass notes. For amazing sound, especially for DVD's, put these with a quality subwoofer and you will have a combination that will rival speakers that are twice as much money.
