I have listened to the Boston Acoustics VR40 and they sound great. Much better than B&W DM604. Hoping to get them soon and run them off my Onkyo TXHSV828. Love to hear from people out there. Please let me know what you think before I go ahead and purchase it. In Australian they cost about $1700 USD. Are they too expensive?

What can I say but the fact that this speaker is tight. The snare drum is right on target and sounds like it is in your room. The highs are sweet and not too harsh or over bright like some metal dome tweeters can be.
The problem I hear with this speaker is that they are not well balanced. The Mids are too pronounced and there is not low end bass to help digest the sound.

More Bass Please!!!.

This speaker is not for a large room. If you put them in a Bedroom, they will be great.

If you can pick them up on close out like I did for $700/pr (they are discontinued) then they are worth it, but if you actually spent the real $1,400/pr, then you should have looked at a Cambridge or Legacy.

I own a pair of VR40's, and I am about to buy another pair. I have auditioned many speakers in this price range1000-2000)before, and since I purchased the VR40's. None have measured up to the overall sound quality in my opinion. A truly sweet, musical speaker, particularly the mids and highs. The key to this speaker for me, was to give it plenty of power and compliment it with a subwoofer. I power each speaker with a Rotel 980 amp. This gives it 240 watts /channel. The speakers are rated up to 300wpc rms. Believe me, they can handle it. At low or high volumes, the speaker stays consistent. I paid $1200 for the 1st pair, and I think they were bargain at twice the price. Now I hear Tweeter, etc. is blowing them out for 799/pair. I can't resist. Someday I'll have the $$ to power them.

I have a pair of BA VR40's and all I can say is "WOW"! Boy do these speakers perform. I have mine hooked up to a Dennnon 2500 and it rocks.

I've had the vr40's in my system now for 5 years and can say that they are a great speaker, regardless of price. The first time i heard them was at a dealer with Conrad Jonson amps(solid state) and also an Onkyo 919 thx reciever and they just blew me away.My first impressions were wow, what tight bass.No boom like you get with so many speakers. This bass you actually feel in the gut,(just play Thirty Three from the Smashing Pumkins or go and listen to a live performance,Theres no boom).
The human voice was like it was there in the room with you and the drums from Led Zepplins Stairway To Heaven are just great.
The Lynfield tweeter is so smooth and clear its like a breath of fresh air.Ifind myself playing songs 4-5 times over.
I've also never really been a heavy metal fan because on many systems their music can sound loud or thrashy, (i don't really know the word for it) but now i can appreciate what great musicians they are.My music tastes can now be eveything from Pavoroti, Enya to now, heavy metal.
These speakers fill the room with music very nicely where sounds seem to come out of no where
One way to tell a good speaker is to see if it makes you want to sing and they make me feel like singing every song i play. For five years now i've been living with these speakers and the Onkyo 919 and things haven't changed one bit from my first impressions.I could happily go on singing with these speakers for another five years.
They've also won Speaker Of The Year here in Australia with the Sound And Image magazine two years running,(95-96)
These will be my reference speaker where all others will be judged for their performace and price.

I lasted about two days on the entry-level tier of high end audio. When I returned to my local HiFi Buys with my Boston CR-7s, I spotted a pair of these VR-40's staning in the 'Open Box Buy' area. They are impressive, with four drivers, all on the front of the cabinet. (Two 8"s, a 4" midrange, and the famous Lynnfield Tweeter) they deliver great sound for home theater and especially classical music, which is mostly what what I like. They also play heavy metal very well, so they are well rounded. If they can be purchased for the amount I paid for them (under $800), then I highly suggest it. I have them running with a strong Yamaha home theater receiver. They are very accurate, and disappear with good recordings, when the lights are turned out. Happy listening!!!

I have been aware of the Boston VR40's for some time, but had never been given a fair opportunity to demo them. Running on a Sunfire Cinema Grand and matching Sunfire tube Pre-Amp, I tried a variety of music on the speakers, from classical to rock, r&b to country. I found the sound to be excellent, part of which, I'm sure, can be attributed to Bob Carver's amazing Sunfire equipment, but I think a great deal of credit should be given to Boston Acoustics. If you consider that Boston bought out the high end speaker company Snell, whose speakers retailed for something like $5000 a pair, and have transfered the technology from these speakers to their own line of speakers, as long as you get the vr40's for under $1000, you are getting a bargain, believe me.

Quite possibility one of the best sounding main speakers I have ever had the pleasure of listening to let alone owning. ALL aspects of it are just perfect, wonderfully rich midrange, superb mids and crystal clear hi's. solid with deep life like sound, I cant say enough about these speakers, or any of the lynnfield VR series (VR 40, 12, 500, and VRS)

Strength:

Good Value, exceptional mids/highs

Weakness:

With tube amp it lacks some bass snap/control

For under a grand these speakers can do a heck of a lot.
I have a forward sounding CD player (Rotel 950) and a Jolida
502B Tube Int. Amp(4 6550C Tubes, 60X2). The mix must be just right because the Bostons emit a smooth relatively laid back sound. The high efficiency of the speaker allows the amp to play at higher volume levels than usual for a tube amp. As I mentioned, the bass could be better, but I'm changing how they are anchored to the floor. I got rid of the poor plastic bases the speakers came with and putting the cabinet on concrete slabs. there was an immediate improvement. I will now fuss with various spikes and cones to further tweak.
All in all the speaker is a solid performer and will probably equal or beat any other full-size loudspeaker for under a grand.
