Strength:

Great sound for both theater and music

Weakness:

Can't find one

Let me first start by saying that I looked at a lot of Micro Theater Speakers before I ended up purchasing the Boston Micro Reference Series. I evaluated the Klispch Quintet, Polk RM 6500, Energy Take5, and the Boston Micro Reference 9000.

When looking for a speaker set I wanted a set that would sound great in both music and theater and make my Denon AVR 1800 receiver sound like a star. The Boston Micro Reference 9000 did this better than any of the speakers I evaluated. They transmit music beautifully and the theater experience is flawless.

When listening to the other speakers I looked at here is what I noticed:

Klispch Quintet - Sound very good in theater, sound terrible in music. When playing a audio CD it sounded like a boom box.

Energy Take5 - Didn't sound as good in theater then the Quintets, but music sounded excellent, I almost bought these and I think they are a great deal for the price.

Polk RM 6500 - Sounded better in both modes then the Quintets and the Energy's, but they were a little bright.

Boston Micro Reference 9000 - Blow them all away in each category and if you can get a deal on them like I did, talked the guy down to $835 plus tax at the Good Guys, it's a steal. I couldn't be happier.

By the wat, use Monster cabling, its worth it.

Hope this helps

Strength:

Excellent in Music and Home Theater

Weakness:

None

I've had the system now for 6 months and I still love it more then ever. However, I did make one modification. I substituted the back VR Micro Surround for the VRS Diffuse Field Surrounds, which is the original configuration that Boston recommended, but when they packaged the Micro 9000 with the VR Micro (originally recommended for the 8000 series) to get the price point down to $1,000.

Now the systems went from great to amazing. If you have 5 channel stereo on your receiver your going to be blown away with the sound difference and you'll get a much stronger surround presence. I highly recommend the adjustment. Still the best purchase I ever made!

Strength:

small speakers fit anywhere, great tweeters, nice metal casing on fronts and center.

Weakness:

the surround speakers are much poorer quality than the rest of the set up

For what it is this is a nice set up. Movies with 5.1 tracks sound great, however a word of caution before buying. Don't expect big speaker sound out of this small package. Some of the reviews say they sound like speakers costing X times more, they don't. They are small and it shows in performance. Mids get lost somewhere between the sub and fronts, giving an unbalanced sound, especially when listening to music. Bass from the sub was also very directional because of the high crossover, which caused problems. The sound on the side of the room with the sub was much fuller than the other side. The rears should be replaced asap. I am probly nit picking too much, most of these are issues any small sub/sat system faces. But they bugged me till i finnaly returned the set when my 30 days were almost up.
As far as sub/sat systems go i would rate this very high, but i think one would do better to buy larger main speakers instead, even if it means forgoing 5.1 for the time being (i bought B&W 603S2s).
Recommended for people who are on a budget, not big audiophiles, and only watch movies with them. It is a very good home theater quick fix.
