$600 list for $50 worth of cheap drivers and poor engineering.

These were my father-in-law's speakers. Every time I stayed at their home (which was often, many times for a full weekend because of an ailing mom-in-law who needs constant care), I'd have to endure listening to this mis-engineered horror. Having built a few speakers myself and keept up on available drivers, I can't imagine how Bose gets $600 for $50 worth of drivers and a two-dollar crossover network. Father-in-law says they sound great - but this is a guy with low- and high-frequency hearing loss since age 50 from working on airplanes. What he's hearing is a mystery; these units have no midrange. They distort easily, have no width or depth; voices and instruments are smeared and don't sound real, and some instruments seem to disappear off familiar recordings. The bass is pure mush. I hooked up $400 worth of better cables (had to pay a guy to rig up special connectors), and they sounded even worse (really unsanitary highs, tubby, vague, uncontrolled bass). After hearing this and other Bose models, I'm convinced they're designed for people who never heard live music, much less a good stereo system. I finally talked him into pitching them out (we gave them to a charity, and I even feel guilty about THAT!). Replaced with PSB satellites and subwoofer that is truly pleasant to listen to, even through dad's ancient Fisher amp, at $100 less. Father-in-law sez he can't hear any difference. If you have his same hearing problem, Bose is for you. The rest of us can get PSB, B&W, or any of several others (god forbid, even Cambridge Soundworks would be a step up).

Strength:

Sound,size,and a reasonable price.

Weakness:

Noe so far.

What in the word are people thinking who write these terrible reviews. These speaker are absoulutely wonderful. I don''t care about freq. response or materials used in the laminate coating. All I care about is what my ears hear when I close my eyes and listen. Bose has made a great product and I love it. Movies are great and music is even better. I traded away a polk satelite system and puchased the AM6 because they sound better and look great!!! Don''t be fooled by negative hype. The bottom line is buy what your ear likes whether thats Bose,Mission,Paradigm,Wharfedale,or even Sony. Its your money and you have to please no one but yourself. Thanks Bose for a great product.

Strength:

Small size, superb marketing.

Weakness:

Non-existant bass, boomy mid-range, screeching highs. The proprietary speaker cables are an abomination. The crossover circuitry is in the bass module... With so many modules I''d considered trying to use them as effects speakers with my Yamaha RX-V1, but you''ve got to use the speakers the Bose way.

Horrific speakers. I have two home theater systems, one for casual viewing/listening and one for the serious stuff. I spent five hours trying every conceivable variation of use for these speakers. I gave up, reboxed them and returned them. More than anything, I''m indignant about the fraudulant practices of Bose via their stores. When you listen to the Accoustimass speakers in one of the listening rooms, you''re lead to believe that the speakers will sound at least tolerable. Don''t believe it. I was astonished at how completely unbalanced the Accoustimass speakers sound. These are the first speakers I''ve ever listened to where the mid-range sounds boomy! If you''re considering these speakers, or any variation I''ll recommend you to http://liquidtheater.com/editorials/56 aka "Why Bose suck"

Strength:

Excellent clarity. Prices should be coming down soon due to the lack of true compatibility with 5.1 sytems.

Weakness:

You will have to purchase a powered sub if you plan to use these speakers on a DD/DTS system.

These are excellent speakers. I am impressed with the large sound from such small speakers. I have a 150 watt powered sub connected directly to the subwoofer output on my 5.1 receiver. The AM6 is hooked up normally, and I have set my speaker size (on the receiver) to large with the crossover at 150. This seems to allow the AM6 to produce the highs and mids while the power on the lower frequencies is supplemented by the powered sub. I would not reccomend using this product without a powered sub.

Strength:

Small speakers, shielded. Fairly good sound for the small size. Makes movies with Dolby Dig or DTS sound Alive. Great sound system for the guy who wants sound but not divorced from a wife who likes it Quiet.

Weakness:

Passive base is there but not pounding out the low Hz. Expensive. Should have an active Base for the $599 price (now $549).

Just purchased the Bose Acousitmass 6 at Fry''s. Thought to go over the internet but shipping would equal Calif Sales Tax (8.25% here). Was thinking of getting Bose Acousitmass 3 and then add other Bose speakers (like the 161 sounded very nice) but did not like the sound of the Bose VCS 10 (sounded cheap). So, ruled out the VCS 30 combo kit. I like my movies (just purchased a JVC RX-9010BK receiver for $359 at J & K over the net)loud but not loud enough that the police pay me a social visit. My wife DOES NOT LIKE loud music nor loud, heart thumping, ear bleading DTS sound. So, the Bose Acousitmass 6 sounds VERY nice quiet and moderately loud. Yes, I can crank it up so you can''t talk to a person two feet away but then I''ll be in divorce court the next day. I''d give the Bose Acousitmass 6 a rating of 4/5. Nice sound but not super rich. I''ve heard NO distortion at any volume and the speakers don''t bounce around when cranked up. The passive base is fairly weak...but it does the job. I''ll probably get an powered base someday but for now, I''m fine. Sincerley, From Sunny California (and Silicon Valley), AWH

Strength:

Small size, easy to hide, not so big and tacky looking. Nice clear sound for a small speaker.

Weakness:

No bass. Buy a sub woofer and then the system is perfect. Not very good for listening to music.

The AM6 is a wonderful system for your home theater. The sound is incredible for DVD/VHS movies. The sound is so realistic you feel your part of the action. Bravo BOSE for making such great sounding speakers. On the other hand, the speakers are not very good for music listening. I think these speakers were built for home theater use. Anyway, if you want to listen to music, why the heck would yo buy a bunch of small speakers. Buy yourself a nice pair of tower speakers and sub woofer to complete your system. That's what I did and the small cube speakers compliment the sub and towers very well.
Here is a hint when ever testing out your system. Listen to something with a full orchestra. Orchestra music has a wider range of dynamics which really tests your speakers. Rock/pop stuff just has a pretty narrow dynamic range. Think about it, a five piece band to a 300 piece orchestra filled with instuments of different tone colors. Rock/Pop music just needs to be clear and loud, so why even buy a nice expensive system if that's all you want is power. Go figure, anyway, happy listening!

Sound like sh*t, a terrible ripoff

I would like to start off by saying that i live in a tiny dorm room. I needed a very tiny speaker that could hide in the corner of the room. I (like a dumbass) purchased this set because i thought Bose had a good track record. I seriously shouldve checked out some of these reviews first. I payed an outrageous price for these pieces of crap that don't even have any bass. That is pretty pathetic. After a week of being pissed off, I finally took them back to the store. I happened to notice a sale on a KLH model that looks amazingly like the crappy Bose. Since I couldn't fit anything else in the space, I picked up a couple of the KLHs. At $15 a piece, these were a a hell of a deal. I hooked them up, and they sound very similar to the Bose speakers. I ended up paying roughly 1/5 the price of the Bose. So to conclude, don't buy these or anything made by this crappy ripoff brand. Thank you.
