Strength:

Loud and Clear typical Bose sound

Weakness:

I really don't see nor ear any.

I purchased an Onkyo shelf system, but wasn't happy with the speakers that came with it. The salesman at the Bose store by me recommended the Am3 being it's in a small bedroom and being powered by a low wattage amp.

Not able to individually control Bass Module volume, Must carefully select Bass module location.

I always love the trash reviews that people like to put up on sites like these. Justification: none, humor value and 'feel good' about themselves: high. These are the same reviewers that drive down your street and you can still hear their car 'music' 3 minutes later. And they probably have no hearing left to judge spaekers anyway! Sorry about the rant. Now onto Bose AM3's. These are a very capable and interesting set that produce highly accurate sound at nearly all volume levels. A fair amount of people will not like them because of this. Most are interested in huge muddy bass and overly squeaky high treble. Many also can't get past the "I think it must have x size speakers to make x type of sound so it must be a gimmik." The reality is that Bose itself is about producing accurate sound. Not the loudest ever heard. These are especially good for TV, jazz, basic & soft rock, classical, etc... Rap, heavy metal and those types will much prefer over sized speakers that can shake the entire house. For music instead of noise, try Bose AM3's just as good as Bose's other AM series but reasonably priced and durable.

Strength:

Size ! , Clarity in the upper range

Weakness:

Sometimes not very "Real " sounding, although nice sounding

Bought the AM3 as a 2nd stereo in my bedroom. Although definitely not audiophime quality, it is crystal clear and with a decent Soundstage,Although no comparison to Klipsch RF3`s which of course are in a different league and price- range. In fact we liked this so much that when we recently moved to a HT setup, with of course my Klipsch`s as the front speakers, I use these are rear speakers with great effect. In fact when viewing "Signs", during the initial scene where Mel Gibson is running thru the field and there are crickets chirping away all around, it was really eerie! and we kept turning back with some unease !. Music, which is what we use the HT for 80% of the time is also amazing..although the paradigm Atoms are much superior , they cannot be wall mounted due to a rear port. Also I preferred the AM3 to the AM5 as rear channels since I could not honestly notice a difference in anything but the Bass...but being rear channels that is immaterial as I have the speakers set to Small.... On the whole this is a 5-5 for rear channel and not too bad for a stereo setup for Small rooms. I`ve read all the Bose reviews as well as the Bose FAQ and the review at Intellexual.net . Am an Engineer myself..and I can understand the drive for technicalities, but if it sounds good, it is good enough for me.

These tiny speakers sound good. I don't have a sophisticated device that can measure decibels or anything like that. I think that if you are going to enjoy a 5.1 surround sound, you just need your 2 ears. I use them with a Sony 80w amplifier and Sony ffront and center speakers. If you need/want bass, you will need an active sub-woofer. I got a 50w Sony sub-woofer and I'm very happy with the whole package. I use the Bose as rear speakers and they deliver.

Strength:

Loud, perfectly clear, makes music and movies a completely different and amazing experience.

Weakness:

Needs a little more bass

For college, I wanted to buy myself a good stereo system that wouldn't take up much space. I also wanted a step-up from my original system. I came to the Bose outlet and found the AM-3 system. At first I was hesitant to buy such a pricey item, but they had a 90 day warranty, so I figured I didn't have anything to lose. After I listen to them for a while, I could really hear how clean and pure the sound was. My audio taste is such that I care more about crisp highs that big bass, and that is basically what I got. Properly positioned, the AM bass module WILL put out great, clean, and powerfull bass, but you really need to work with the acoustics of the room. I've read some of the reviews here, and they are ridiculous. Bose makes great stuff, and if you dont like it, just take it back or sell it, you can usually ebay it for the retail price or so. I could have returned my system, but I didnt because they were the best speakers I have ever owned. Imaging is awesome, highs are super-clear, mids are nice and strong, bass is tights as s drum. Yeah, they are expensive, buy you really get what you pay for. I am extremely happy with them. Oh, and my Yamaha RX-592 receiver powered them with grace and clarity.

Bose quality sound. Great speakers, my family and friends are simply blown away when they walk into the room. I use a Sony STR DB 780 receiver and the combination works really well. I shall be buying another pair and a centre channel very soon to make 5.1 surround sound. Go and listen to them yourself, you wont be disappointed

Strength:

GE-inspired "spacemaker" design. Keeps the plastics industry thriving. Complements your day-glo landscape art collection.

Weakness:

Boom-box performance at a hi-fi price. No bass. Thin, bodyless, disjointed midrange. No imaging. No treble. High-end pretensions and high cost. Not bio-degradeable for land-fills.

Bose Accoustimass 3,5, etc... This review is for ANY "McMusic" system by Bose. First of all, I apologize for working as a salesperson for Circuit City while an audiophile through and through. O.K., back to Bose systems, and their marketing strategy. I couldn't have expressed it better than Isaac Wong or Tom or Alan when they pointed out that the little clock radio speakers are too big for treble and too small for midrange. Similarly, many others have pointed out the inadequacy of the two 5 1/2" drivers for producing bass, and their unsuitablility for midrange (which they DO produce by default). I had always suspected a frequency response in the neighborhood of 40 hz to 15 khz. Turns out I was spot-on. It's no mystery that Bose doesn't publish specs--they simply can't compete (in REAL musical terms) with ANY audiophile speaker. In all fairness to Bose, they DO spend a great deal of R and D time and resources. Unfortunately, on the development side, the customer gets short-changed every time. The primary focus of Bose's research is psycho-accoustics: i.e., how we perceive sound waves at a live performance, and how their engineers can (most cheaply) replicate that "mass" of direct/reflected sound in the home. Obviously, that research doesn't result in high-tech driver design, crossover design, OR cabinet design. What it DOES result in is a gee-whiz, David Copperfield smoke-and-mirrors act designed to "hook" you at first demo. They've done their homework. First, knowing that the average (non-audiophile) consumer is not interested in imaging ("stereo everywhere" is preferred over pinpoint localization),and secondly, knowing that if the FUNDAMENTALS of mid-bass and mid-treble are adequately reproduced, untrained ears will mistake HARMONICS for the missing music. Thus, no need for accurate soundstaging OR frequency response! Just produce "crisp" sound and non-critical listeners will praise Bose engineers. ANY halfway-decent minispeaker in a minimalist enclosure will sound "crisp". My advice: Don't buy ANY product from a manufacturer who hides specs. Bose is fully capable of producing an audiophile product. Their financial reserves are staggering! But unless they come under the mangement of a Jim Thiel or a Von Schweikert, expect the same "fool some of the people all of the time" philosophy, and more cute pseudo-musical junk.

Anyone considering buying this speaker system should go out and get them now. Some of the reviews on here are rediculous and i have to wonder if some of these people have ever actually heard the Acoustimass 3 system on a decent Hi-Fi. These speakers sound fantastic and give a very natural/crisp sound at all volume levels. You will find yourself listening to music and hearing things you never heard in the track whilst using previous speakers.

Strength:

The bass in a small room is a litle too rich and deep, so i dont put the bass on full. I find the sattelite speakers to be responsive and give good clarity to vocals and guitar. High pitched guitar solos sound exquisite. And, as i listen to a lot of punk music, the sound of guitar was a major consideration when choosing a system.

Weakness:

As i have already said, they arent too good for throwing sound over long distances or filling large rooms, however if u want something to fill halls or other large spaces with music, you probably ought to be looking to spend a little more. I have not had any problems with it though.

I would personally say that in the small room in which i use thes speakers, they have ample range and performance. The built-in microchip stops you putting through so much power that you blow them up. Very good speakers for a small room, but i would imagine they're a little crap in a room much larger than about 15 or so metres square. They have a frequency responce from 20 Hz to 20 MHz, which no-one can complain about coz you cant hear sounds outside that range anyway. For an interesting sound just try linking them with the TEAC reference 300 system. If you are used to ghetto blasters and other micro systems that you buy 'off the shelf' in supermarkets and places like that, the sheer scope of the sound will blow you away. However, audio buffs probably wont be too impressed.

If I knew this site existed back then, I wouldn''t have blown $400 on such bad speakers. As a geek who envies anything small and stylish, I got suckered into buying these AM3 speakers. Like all the people who posted 4 and 5 star reviews, the initial impression is "Wow powerful bass and such big sound from these tiny speakers? Impressive!" But the excitement stops here. First let''s talk about the satellites. What initial impression of "Big Sound" quickly becomes harsh and artificially boosted mid-highs which sounds annoying after hours of listening. These satellites are too big to produce the high frequency and too small to produce the mid range. What you end up with is a muddy, cardboard sounding tone. Sure the sound stage seems big because the speakers blend in with your furniture, but if you close your eyes you can''t really tell where the instruments are on stage. Now let''s get to the "bass module". Again the bass module is too big to produce the midrange and too small to produce the low freq. What initial impression of "powerful bass" quickly becomes boomy and annoying. It doesn''t go down very low, so opposed to the marketing literature, the "bass" is very directional, i.e. if you place it on the left side of your room you can tell that the left side music is louder and boomier than the right side. Furthermore you can''t really control the volume of the bass module independently and IMO it is setup way too loud. A good subwoofer shouldn''t draw attention to itself. Bose certainly appeals to the beginner who is easily impressed by "powerful bass". Now as to the ease of setup and "significant other approval", the point is moot as there are lots of smallish bookshelf speakers that are several times cheaper, produce higher highs, lower lows, sweeter midranges, don''t weigh a ton and will sound a lot more musical without listening fatique.
