It's a shame products like this exist. It's also a shame consumer-oriented "audio" magazines, such as Stereo Review pump this mid-fi junk as some sort of revelation. These speakers, to me, are the ultimate in tricky design... they sound great for the first ten minutes in the listening room... but, take them home, and you'll find them ANNOYING. none of the sounds are natural, everything is distorted, blurred and smeared. These speakers can make the most sophisticated set of electronics sound terrible... the shame is, with some smart shopping, one could pick up some missions, sound dynamics or Jamo's and find a much more musical product at a lower price... but, one probably won't, because one finds comfort in the fact that there is a Bose ad on every third page of Sound+Vision or Audio...
deceptive, too expensive and annoying... i'll give it a star for good build quality though.

poor frequency range, mushy ambience

I heard this Bose system at a friends house recently and was curious to read what the folks at Audioreview thought of it. It turns out that this is the most reviewed speaker of all! It's obviously caused a fair bit of controversy...
I have to agree with the assessment of those who are not at all impressed with this product and in fact I have little to add that hasn't already been said over and over again. I would just like to encourage those who are thinking of buying a Bose product to spend some time listening to similar priced speakers such as the Energy Take 5 system or a set of low end Paradigm speakers...preferably at a dealer with a proper listening room. Chances are you'll wind up with speakers that cost less and sound much better. As for size, the alternatives are not all that much bigger...they just sound that way.

these speakers sound nice. I never heard a subwoofer before I bought these speakers. I heard the bass module and thought that the bass was nice. well I was wrong, I went to the hifi store and heard the M&K V-75 mark II and that was it!! with the yamaha 1103 and that sub boy it sounds great.. the sub really makes the speakers... one less star for lack of bass..

Everything else... Sound; Value; Build Quality etc.

The poster below must not have looked around much before buying those Bose speakers.

There are *plenty* of sub/sat systems on the market that easily slaughter the AM10s... And can be hung on walls, as to not be "in the way."

My choice... The Definitive Technology ProCinema 80.6 or 100.6 sub/sat systems. These beat the AM10s in every area except size (and they aren't that big). They even come with wall mounting brackets built on the little speakers! With Bose, you have to buy them.

If size is *super* important to you, then Galo makes a very respectable sub/sat system that looks better than Bose, is equally small, and sounds *much* better (for about the same price).

Conclusion... Bose is a waste of money. Look at some alternative systems before buying, or you *will* be sorry!

Strength:

They are pretty small.

Weakness:

Anything to do with audio reproduction.

As a sculpture or something to look at.... these are nice. Just don't expect to get any "good" sound out of them. They are sold to be home theater... and Charlie Chaplin shorts will sound acceptible through them. But they can't handle anything with any dynamics to them, and showe their truely horrible abilities with something in true 5.1. Want to hear something horrible- listen to Tommorow Never Knows (James Bond) through them... my skin crawls as I remember that! Tinny highs, mddled mid and distorted upper bass (no lower bass). Avoid this at all costs!

Strength:

I think size because that's what honest people have said.

I am very upset because people keep writing bad reviews about a product they haven't even purchased.. I came to this site expecting to see some constructive critisim from people who have purchased this product so that I can evaluate whether or not I would want to purchase the item in the future. If you want to bad mouth a product go to the product that you support and do it there otherwise save the comments because some of us may like these speakers.
Thank-you

Strength:

small size

Weakness:

using cube for center channel

I can't
share withtthe complaint of not having enough bass. With my bass module in the corner of the room and port facing corner there is TOO MUCH bass so I had to move 2 feet away from wall across from port.
I simply use some equalizer setting from Sony STR-DT825 reciever to bost bass slightly. Also positioning makes a difference hight-wise.
Judging on space, good. Price, really only worth 450-500 (once again sound for size may increase personal value)

everything else

When I first bought the extremely overpriced am-10's. I was impressed with the small/compact size and the quality of the speakers. I never did any comparison shopping nor did I own any type of speakers before, so I was convinced they were great speakers by what their 'advertisements' say. For the price of these speakers, you could get another set of speakers that are WAY better and cheaper than this one. These speakers lack in every department. It sounds nice on a normal level, but turn it up a little high and you're in a crackling/distorting sound heaven. Also, the bass is very weak. The only recommendation I would have for these speakers is if you have a tiny room and money to throw away. The fact that they don't publish the specs on their products really disturbs me.

Strength:

small size can handle my receiver's power

Weakness:

it takes a little messing with the bass to get the right sound

I listened to other speaker systems in this price range (polk, infinity, etc.) and I found that this is the best way to go.. The base may be to low but I agree that if you move the module around you can find the right sound. I have an Onkyo receiver(tx-d787} and this kicks out the sound. The speakers have no problem reaching top volume and do not sound distorted. I have the Bose vcs-10 for my center speaker and moved the cube speaker for my rear surround speaker(6.1) setup. This kicks butt when watching dvds.

Strength:

Small cubes that are hidden away.

Weakness:

Poor Tonal distribution and sound with anything but optical/coaxial input (DSS & DVD). POOR center channel sound.

I purchased the AM10's after a demo at Circuit City in 1998. They played a dvd that the speakers just blew me away. However after setting them up in my Home Theatre, I noticed that the bass response was non-existant. In the store demo, it appeared to be very bassy. When listening to Cd's or tapes or Fm broadcast's the speakers were "missing" alot. I used to have "OLD" floor speakers with 15" woofers in them. Switching to the cubes made a the sound vanish. I have an Onkyo Tx838 receiver. The first thing I did was purchase a Energy sub. This brought the Bass response out pretty good and solved that problem. However, the missing treble and midrange notes problem has not been solved. I can say speaker placement is extremely important. I have the Energy under a coffee table hidden away (much more hidden than the acoustimass module). I have the speakers in the corners mounted in the walls with them angled down into the listening area (it makes a huge difference). The top speaker is angled into the wall to "reflect" the bottom is aimed at the listening area. The same applies for the rear speakers. The center is directly above the tv. Another complaint from visitors is that voices are hard to hear in some passages. (I have the center as a small speaker in the onyko setup, the way your supposed to have it). If I would have listened to other speakers I would never have spent 799.00 on these speakers. I'm currently looking at the Infinity CS-3's (I think that is the model name). I went to a demo at Brandsmart and those speakers were great (but I have seen this before with the Bose demo). But the big key is speaker placement and make the rear speakers +10 since they don't have that much sound (maybe this is a problem with the 838). Finally, these are not recommended to anyone. Unless you "just don't care about the sound" and want to spend money.
