The Bosephobe's (Boso's for short) outbursts are pretty revealing; they're on a kind of pathetic power trip, needing to force Bose owners to defend themselves against the Boso's corrosive bile. The sound they really love best is the sibilance of their sibilant-spitting hissy-fits.
Poor George. You'd think his nice Nautiluses would give him enough pleasure to not waste time authoring cliche-ridden rants. Revealing.

Quote from one of George's previous posts: "The highs had no sibilance". This was intended as a criticism. George's ears prefer sibilance. If yours don't, ignore his nonsense, and all the other idiotic stuck-in-the-muck jump-on-the-bandwagon lynch-mob-mentality noise making.

In reply to the criticism below (or the attempt to criticize)

1 I own B&W Nautilus Series Speakers
2 sibilance (A minimum amount) is needed to make speaker sound natural.
3 Bose have no sibilance at all because they have no highs, or lows for that matter.
4 NO AUDIOPHILE ALIVE WOULD EVER STAND BY BOSE!
Think about why real do ALL audiophiles dis-like Bose?

Message for George

Give it up. Your having a battle of the wits with a few unarmed people. You must remember back before you knew truly knew anything, you and all your friends probably liked Bose, Kenwood, Sherwood , ect. Give these people a break if they wish to waist there money on junk then defend their stupidity then let them be. They will never learn.

I disagree with the need for facts in this area. Bose speaks for it’s self “Poor Sonic Quality”

Strength:

None

Weakness:

No Highs, No Lows, It Must Be Bose!!!!

Anyone who thinks these speakers are worth a sh** is deaf. Lose your delusion!!! Remember the prayer: GOD-Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. Serenity = Bose speakers sound bad for the money. Courage = Shop for something better. Wisdom = Use your ears, for crying out loud!! 'Nuff said??

Strength:

Soundstage - Clear highs- Warm Mids - Tremendous Bass.. Can handle the highest output of any Amp/Receiver.

Weakness:

Tweeking the speaker placement. Setting up the Equalizer but well worth it.......

I have owned these speakers for about a year now and I am very pleased with their performance...The Soundstage is rich. My Room is filled with music, meaning I don't have to sit directly in the middle of the room [between the speakers] to get the correct "imaging".."Tech at its best" Clarity, tones and vocals are dead on in all types of music. I strictly use these 901's for stereo listening only. This is what they are designed for..
Setting up the equalizer is a bit of a work out but the end result is wonderful..I run these Speakers through a Denon Poa -5200 2 channel amp {120watts per channel} Pre amped by a Denon AVR-5800. A great situation for these 901's is running them through its own amp/power source. Minimun I would recommend is at least a 100 watts per channel and a good amp/receiver. You will get the most out of these speakers by DRIVING them..They can handle any thing you got at any volume with no distortion!
I recommend these speakers for people who want to spend a reasonable amount of money and not second guessing why they bought them..If I had had $5000 I could by Higher-end speakers but I don't! In this price range [$1500] the handling and range of these 901's I could not find any to match, I am sure there are but that's if I want to buy 4'to 5' tall tower speakers and they take up a lot of wall space!
I settled for these and I have not regreted it to date..
Audition these speakers!!

Strength:

Elegant appearance, Bose name will impress anybody except your audiophile friends

Weakness:

Expensive, difficult to position properly (see below)

I was thrilled when my friend gave me his old 901s, knowing that they've been Bose' top of the line for some time. At first listen, however, I found them pretty muddy. After doing a little research on the web (since I didn't have the manual) I realized that I had them positioned completely wrong. I spent a night experimenting with the positioning and I did get them to sound better. Pretty darn good, actually.

In case you also didn't get a manual with yours, here's what Bose says on their website about how to place the 901s:

1. For good stereo separation, place the speakers 4-12 feet (1.2 - 3.6 m) apart along one wall of your room. For
the Lifestyle® 901 music system, place the powered speaker on the left, within reach of an electrical outlet,
and the accessory speaker on the right.

2. Aim the V-shaped rear panel of each speaker toward the wall behind it. Do not aim the V toward a corner.
Ideally, place the tip of the V at a distance of 16 inches (40 cm) from the back wall. Do not place the
speaker closer than 8 inches (20 cm) from the wall.

3. Place the speakers 2-4 feet (60-120 cm) from the side walls.

4. Place the speakers at least 2 feet (60 cm) or more from any sound-absorbent furnishings.

Okay, that's all well and good, but if you think about it, that's a minimum of a 21 square foot 'box' of floor space that you need to dedicate to each speaker (a 36 square foot 'box' is recommended). No 'sound-absorbent furnishings' (like a couch, a chair, drapes, etc.) can be in that space for the 901s to perform optimally. I can't imagine that working for anyone with a typical, American living room and forget about it if you're in an apartment. Maybe if you live in a loft.

I haven't tried hanging these from the ceiling, but that probably is the way to get the best sound out of them without having to replace any additional furniture. However, these suckers are heavy (36+ lbs. each), just the amount and gauge of chain you need to hang them makes that a pretty 'heavy artillery' solution. The process is colorfully explained in Rich Martens post here:
http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/Speaker/product_6929.shtml
In short, you have to be really dedicated to the 901s to go as far as hanging them from the cieling.

I personally haven't noticed the inefficiency that many here have written about, I'm pumping about 80 watts into them from a low-current Technics receiver, and with the same amount of juice they get louder than my Klipsch KSS (in another room) which have a sensitivity rating of 93dB @ 1watt/1meter (Bose doesn't post their specs).

However, the Bose EQ they require makes my Klipsch sound awful. I mean really, really bad...peel the skin off your eardrums they get so harsh. Since the EQ must be routed through the Tape Out, the 901s are a poor choice if you're going to be using any other speakers with your system.

So here's my buying advice:

$1500 a pair + all the hassles of setting them up = you can do better elsewhere. There are probably hundreds of speakers you could get for that price that sound as good (or better) for that kind of money (or less). Check out Paradigm, Klipsch, Infinity, even Cambridge SoundWorks...the list goes on.

If you are dead set on staying with the 901s, and you're willing to chain them to the rafters or redecorate, there's probably at least a half dozen pair available on Ebay right now for $200 - $600.

Good luck!
