Strength:

Large Sound, Clean Sound

Weakness:

Large Footprint, Needs Carefull placement

I purchased these at a Superstore on the basis of hearing a friends pair of 401's. I wanted a Sub/Sat system at first but each time I heard a pair of Bose AM speakers I didn't think they would sound great out of the showroom. I think that the Bose floor-standing/Bookshelf models sound pretty good for the price. I am planning on using these in conjunction with my Sony 835 Reciever for my front speakers. So far they sound pretty good if you place them correctly. You can really get a lot of bass out of them if you place them about 2" from a wall.

These speakers are great! Of course, Im far from experienced in the ways of an audiophile, but to me, these speakers are more than adequate.

Strength:

the bose name

Weakness:

not defining enough

Its quite amazing what the bose legacy has done for the average person. I had a couple of friends at my place a few weeks ago. I had just finished buying the rest of my Mirage speakers( consisting of OM-10, OM-C2, OM-R2 and BPS150i sub). Close to 5000.oo Cdn. in speakers. And there ...in the corner of the room were my pair of Bose 401's sitting idle. "WoW, look Bose"! The Mirage didn't faze them(until i let them listen to it).

Thats exactley what Amar Bose wanted...and he got it.They were a good speaker...20 years ago they were a great speaker. But unfortenately he hasn't kept to the industries changes. But hey---I bought mine at 20 in 1994 and they opened my eyes to the world of good sound.
I remember why I bought them---they were 4 ohm. Perfect for the back seat of the car.Yeah baby! I cruised around with the 401's just a hammering away. I didn't have the most bass but they were loud and clear. The tweeters(because of the angle of the speaker) shot right out the window. Everybody could hear me!Ha ha!
I got out of the car thing(settled for some old 6 by 9's) and remember hooking up the 401's to my old Kenwood amp and watching Aliens in Stereo. Oh man I loved it. I knew I needed a home theatre setup but didn't have a clue where to start.
The 401's served as my mains for 3 years. They did the job but I was never really happy. I put together a system and am still far from being done. But thats another story...

The 401's were great. They had their weaknesses thats for sure. Problem with Bose is they don't give you real world specs. I would sure like to know the sensitivity of these,I bet its not over 87db. Pretty inefficient. Bass-they had tons the way I had them set up. Muddy? you bet. But it sure made an impression on the guys.
And yes..they are for sale. I believe they are a 1993 model ( bought them as demos in Feb. 1994). The cabinets have a couple of dings, the one woofer at loud volumes pops and the grilles are half shredded because of my cat. Any buyers? my email should be listed...
