B&W DM604 S3 Floorstanding Speakers

B&W DM604 S3 Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The imposing DM604 S3 is the only full 3-way system in the range. The dedicated Kevlar® cone midrange driver is housed in its own isolated chamber within the cabinet and delivers all the nuances of the detail in the recording without the encumbrance of having to produce any bass.

Twin 180mm (7-in) aluminium cone bass drivers combine with Flowport to deliver the deepest bass frequencies with ease. Like all the vented-box systems in the range, foam plugs are supplied to block the ports should the acoustic of the listening room impose too much bass reinforcement.

Suited to larger rooms, the DM604 S3 is capable of reproducing everything from the delicate sounds of a solo performance to the complexities of a large ensemble. In combination with the LCR600 S3 centre speaker it forms the basis of a truly impressive home theatre installation.

Strength:

Crisp, clear, tight sound. Great bass. B&W technology. Good value.

Weakness:

Power Hungry. Perhaps placement sensitive, but I have them in an oddly shaped room. Everybody would prefer a wood veneer, but you can't claim "value" as a strength and "vinyl veneer" as a weekness. Regardless, you'll likely be the only one to notice that it isn't wood.

I should probably begin by admitting that I've had several pairs of B&W's (some nicer and some not as nice as the DM604s3) and am a diehard B&W fan. Therefore, my opinion is biased. My method of choosing speakers usually consists of finding out how much money I have and then finding out what the best B&W speaker is that I can afford. I like B&W because they bring much of the technology used in their more expensive speakers into a price range that the average Joe can afford. They sound crisp, clear, but never grating or annoying. They have excellent imaging and soundstage. They are particularly convincing when listening to classical, jazz, and female vocals. I've had this set for 4 months and several hundred hours of casual listening, as well as about five hours of critical listening. They are everything I like about B&W stated above. I find the base to be abundant, even a bit too heavy on some pieces (I don't do HT). I think it's more of a recording and placement issue than an issue with the speakers. I occasionally wish for a bit more punch. They do need plenty of power. I'm currently using an Adcom GFA-555 - not the world's greatest amp, but it's better than many and does have decent power at 200/side. I think the speaker is a great value and you'll be hard pressed to get better sound at this price point. I'd like to give it a 9 out of 10 overall, but I can't. I have to say it's closer to a 5 than a 4.

Strength:

Clarity of sound, high and low tones

Weakness:

medium tones - just a little bit too weak ( for me of course)

Excellent value for money. B& W speakers are extremely good to listen classical - or good electronic music on. I have been enjoying the set of speakers very much, but I am already looking for something better now. I think Marantz - amplifier is the optimal choice for such speakers - sound gets much softer using this amplifier. The CD player I use in this set is Rotel. Even though the whole set seems to be working very well, I am planning to experiment with different CD player and amps. Overall I can recommend the B & W 604 S3 to anyone who seeks clarity of low and high tones.

Strength:

Clarity, 3D soundstage, bass extension, those tweeters.

Weakness:

Plastic woodgrain, but I want speakers first, not furniture!

I spent a long time listening to speakers in this price range - I was looking for HiFi first, HT second. At one of the Aussie producers (VAF), I spent hours listening to the range, but was dissapointed. Eventually heard the Audience and the 603's and thought I was getting close. Then the 604's arrived in Aus, and I had found my speaker! Teamed with my HK AVR5000 receiver, they sound great! When I switched my Musical Fidelity power amp in for stereo listening, they really came to life! Do yourself a favor and hook these speakers up to a real amp, the HT recievers are nice, but they don't cut it for real HiFi.

Too many to mention, I was using my old Rogers LS7's at home as a yardstick. It is surprising how good these 19 year old speakers still are!

Strength:

Tweeter high but smooth, mids flow nicely between the high and upper lows and as stated earlier enough bass in music listenig for the wife to say "lower the bass for the tenth time"!

Weakness:

cheap cabinet but for anothe $500 that could have been fixed. from a distance the black cabs look ok!

I have been looking for speakers that could do music as well as home theater. After a year long search I came back to the 604's. With my favorite dvd and 3 cd's in hand i traveled a lot of N.Cal. I've listened to them all in the 1k to 2k price point from polk, boston acoustic, canton, klipsch, definitives, atlantics,to infinity and beyond! The series 3 by far are better than the series 2 They took all of 40 hrs to break in and didn't sound half bad during that process.I listen to all types excluding rap and found them to be the all around speaker with just the right amount of crossover, well in some cases a little more bass than i like for music(noting my eq can't fix) and for movies a little bit sub makes the differance. I did find a pr of martinLogins that sounded sweet but not for 3300. thank you

Demoed these speakers the first time against Klipsh RF-7 speakers . I originally was going to go with the Klipsh but at high volumes they were almost unlistenable . The 604's however seemed to take everything the Denon 3303 would dish to it and wanted more . It stayed composed and tight in the upper and lower end . I started with some Polk RT35 speakers and then went to Bose 601IV which I recommend not getting , although some people might appreciate Bose sound . Then I went for some JBL S312's and they were pretty ok . They were just lacking that total package I was looking for . I then decided I will probably have to go a little more high end to achieve what I wanted . After demoing some Mirage " which sounded great but way to laid back , more for classical or jazz " , then some m and k which were also pretty good , and a few others I decided the 604's were the speaker for me . They explode for music that needs to explode and are laid back on music that was meant to be laid back . For the price or im my opinion quite a bit higher you probably cannot get a better speaker . Everything from Slayer to Led Zepplin sounds just awesome on these things . No other speaker I have demoed has such a rich full 3dimensional sound except for the $4000 a speaker D and W's . There are many speakers that do some things excellent but few that have that total package under $2,000 . These for me have it all and I am finally satisfied with what I have . Also I am using a Denon 2800 to push these , A Paridigm PS1000 sub and Denon 370 cd player . I am using Polk RT35 surrounds and polk center until I can afford the complete D and W setup .

Strength:

Nice bass, great sound for both music and theater.

Weakness:

Not shielded and heavy.

I bought my first pair of B&W's some 10 years ago and figgered it was time to upgrade my speakers as I had recnetly purchased a new reciver, Yamaha RX-V1. I at first auditioned and bought the 603. After a few weeks they just didn't go deep enuff to suit my taste. I returned them and picked up the 604's. BINGO, we have a winner. These speakers are fookin' great. My system consist of 604 mains, 602 rear surrounds, LCR 600 front & rear center and B&W 201i front effects & Cambridge Soundworks 10" sub with slave.

Strength:

great audio sound & enough bass for home theater that I really don't need a subwoofer for my small house.

Weakness:

NONE

I bought these speakers while in the UK the home of B&W...My neighbor first told me about them and invited me to where he works to here them in a sound room..@ 1st we listened to the 603S4 w/ matching center & rear surround..it had a great sound but I wanted just a little more BASS so asked him about the 604S3 and BOOM! We have a winner! The 604S3 had a more natural sound that near studio quality way better than the other speakers that I turned around and sold on ebay...

Not so easy to give my point of vue in english, but it's so great to ear a sound like that !! Just what an audiophile can wait. neutral sound, but musical, beautiful bass, logical medium, and quiet aigue. when i was looking for my system, i had to listen about twenty system. And this one was the best choice to listen to a CD, respecting the meaning of the musician. My system : Rotel rb and rc 1070 ; rotel 961 ; cables : oelbach and cambridge. It pulse !

Strength:

Highs, Mids and the BASS!! Very dynamic and 3D sounding speakers. Finish is great in black, looks very nice. Recommended!

Weakness:

None! I drive those with my HK AVR 4000 for now, and i can play really LOUD without distortion.

Just bought theese speakers! Listned to 603 S3 first and they sounded so great, but i wanted more of the low frequenzes. So i bought the 604 S3! They sound much greater at high volumes than 603 S3. Iam a 19 years old audiophile and like powerfull bass! Iam listen to lot of trance music and psychedelic.. Theese speakers are AWESOME with psychedelic trance! The bass punch you in the chest and it goes very deep to. But i must say like many others here, the best with theese speakers are the mids & higs! They are just wonderfull. I recommend theese speakers to everyone! I have mine in black finish, much nicer than sorrento i think. And you dont need a seperate subwoofer for hometheater or music. Iam a life fan to Bowers & Wilkins now. :)

Strength:

Midrange is wonderful.

Weakness:

They could thump a little harder.

I think that the B&W 604 S3 are fantastic speakers. When I was shopping, I listend to Paradigm Reference towers, Definitive towers with powered subwoofers, Dynaudio towers which sounded amazing but I couldn't afford the $2500 price tag, and Klipshe towers. I soon fell in love with the Bowers & Wilkins and decided that these speakers played ever intended note with ease. I strongly recommend them.
