These speakers are incredible....of all the speakers I have listened to including my nephews Magnepan 1.7s, these Apogee Centauras Slant 6s are astonishing....I use them with a Take 5 Energy sub and satelites....WOW! Mids and Highs are impeccable.. I purchased these speakers in mint condition from the original owner who rarely used them and when he did only listened at "low volume".

Listening experience is so amazing and down right additive....

Strength:

Superb Transparency, midrange coherence, focus, soundstaging.

Weakness:

Bass definition, and extension.

I bought these speakers in 1995 from someone who had problems with his TV due to the intense magnetic field of its ribbons.

Once I connected it into my system, I knew they were special. It was a whole new level of transparency and resolution.....quite unlike any in my experience.

Initially I used it with NAD 2700 amps and they sounded marvellous. Over the years as I upgraded my system, the speakers improved accordingly, never failing to reveal the miniscule improvements wrought by tweaks and upgrades.

My current system consists of the following:
CEC TL-1
Genesis Time Lens
Classe DAC-1
Sonic Frontiers SFL-2
VTL MB-300
Reference3a La Suprema

I sold every previous component I had with each upgrade, all but this. Because of its scalablity. It remains a very musical and revealing speaker.....able to reveal everything my system has to offer. The only reason I bought the Reference3a is because of its superior bass extension.
Even now....I have a hard time deciding which speaker is better the bass performance notwithstanding.

A friend of mine who owns a MBL-101D was impressed with the performance of my system with the SLANT6s, despite the fact that his MBL costs more than my entire system combined.

Above all this is a superb speaker......an absolute steal even at the full retail price.

Strength:

Most awesome transparency and midrange

Weakness:

bass a little shy

I have purchased everyhing from Thiel 2.5 to Martin Logan Cls to Audio Concepts Sapphire II

I have attended three NY audio shows. I almost bought a pair Duntech Knights but I still have a hard time comparing anything to the Apogees

I use them with a pair of Quick Silver KT88's and an Audio innovations Tube Preamp with all audio Alchemy DAC and jitter reduction with a NAD CD and Audioquest rubies. I did not know Apogee went out of business?? I feel like crying because I would of only upgraded to another. Why did they go out of business??

Strength:

Transparency, ease of placement relative to other Apogees.

Weakness:

None at the price I paid

Read the previous reviews and saw a pair of slant 6's on e-bay. Purchased for $800 with Klipsch KSW100 8" sub that matches well. First used in H/T application next to my 61" sony v-series with no sign of magnetic interference. They are not as effecient as JBL towers(90)they replaced nor Klipsch center(94) but with adjustment using HK AVR85 they worked very well in H/T setup.
These speakers are meant for music so I moved them to music only setup in a listening room. Despite other previous reviews the bass with these is very nice if you place them at least one foot from wall. They are 6 feet apart and my overstuffed leather easy chair is about eight feet from speakers. I am using these with Jolida 1501a hybrid amp and Jolida 603 tube cd player with amazing results. Had cheap Sony receiver and Fisher cd player at first and was somewhat dissapointed with level and type of reproduction of sound. Now with Jolida components these speakers excell! Imaging is incredible as you close your eyes and the sound is literally floating in the room. Bass is chest thumping even without a sub. Vifa woofer is very capable of low frequecy response for music but in H/T setup you could use the sub for explosions etc. If you dont know about Jolida stuff get ahold of Bill Baker at www.responseaudio.com. Bill is great to answer all your questions right away and wont force any item on you. Jolida stuff is so inexpensive you wont believe it.
These are not the most effecient speakers nor are they amp burners like the scintilla. You will need at least 60 watts of good clean power to run these loud and tube power is preferred with apogee. If your on a budget, but want quasi-audiophile components, I highly recommend these speakers with Jolida intgrated amps. You can have a system, speakers and source and amp, for well under two thousand. I have consistently seen these slant 6's on audiogon and ebay for under a thousand and as low as $700. Many shy away due to the company going under but hey that's how you pick up a bargain.
Apogee users can take advantage of two web sites for info. I believe they will lead you to repair availabilty. WWW.apogeespeakers.totalserve.co.uk/ will give you lots of info on different apogee speakers. It is a new site so be patient it will become more extensive in due season. Also an Apogee users forum is at AudioWorlds StraightWire forum. This forum is good for Apogee nuts to share ideas and so forth.

Strength:

Mid and high

Weakness:

mid low

Superb in mid and high, fair in bass. Loose in mid low especially in male voice.Change to a good mid low interconect but sacrifice a little bit high. Use best in McCormack DNA 0.5 or a bit better in bass using Krell KSA 50.
Overall: the best money can buy for under $2000 and fight fiercely with most speaker double it price.

These are great speakers. Very sweet sounding. You must be in the sweet spot to experience the full extend of the music. If you like listening alone, you cannot beat these speakers at the price range.

I have had the Apogee Slant Six speakers for about three years now. I use
them in conjunction with a Sunfire Subwoofer. The cables are the
recommended Symo's and my amplifier is the Musical Fidelity A1000(50
watt per channel Class A). The sound quality is very transparent, but
laid back. The images do not float in a three dimensional space in front
of the listener. The bass quality is okay without the subwoofer, but I
would recommend adding the Sunfire to really fill things out. Overall,
this speaker sounds very good.

Usually, I don't post review on product has been discontinued. However, I make an exception this time.
About a couple of years ago, my brother inlaw bought these speakers from an audio store that closed out the product line. The purchased was mostly base on price and my brother accepted the fact that these speakers are pinpoint imaging. At that time, I did not think much of these speakers since I like speakers that have a sound stage that could fill the room up with sound. Since that time I had numereous chances to hear the speaker with differnt electronics (Audire, Mark Levinson, Audio Research, Conrad Johnson, Muse, Jolida), and still was not impressed with the sound stage at all. The Audio Research and Mark Levinson gears did make the speakers sound better with lager sound stage, but still not to the point where I would say that their image is not pinpointing.

Any way, a bout four months ago, I bought a tube preamps. that was built by Randy Fay of Canada. This tube preamp. is unbelievably good for the money. In fact, Randy Fay was not lying in saying that his design could equal or beat most Stereophile class A preamp.

Even with the Randy Fay preamp. the Slant 6 image still some what pinpoint, but improved tremendously over my brother tube preamp. which is the Sunfire Tube preamp. (he also has the Sunfire two channel amps. running biwiring to the Slant 6). This caught my attention to the Slant 6 and what it could potentially do.

I studied Randy Fay preamp. for a couple of months (Thanks Randy for getting me started in this), and finally, I had enought courage to modified his preamp. with some of my idea to see if they would make any different to the Slant 6.

Over the Thanks Giving I evaluated the Slant 6 with my brother in-law and a number of his friends with the new preamp. This is where I am impressed with the Slant 6. With the new tube preamp. and Sunfire 2 channel amp., the Slant 6 image is no longer pinpoint, and three dimensional (the impossible has happened). The bass however is still sluggish, and I was able to fix this with a modified version of the Sunfire Cinema Grand (my hometheater amp.).

Needless to say, my brother inlaw was sad and happy at the same time. He decided to sell his Sunfire Tube Preamp. and 2 channel amp. combo, and replace it with a modified Randy Fay tube preamp. and a modified Sunfire Cinema Grand. He asked me to modified his 2 Channel Sunfire Amp., but after checking the circuitry, I found out that I could not make it any better.

For the money (my brother paid $ 1,500.00), and with appropriate room size (12' x 18' or larger) I would say that it is the best you could do for your money. Infact, it sounds better than my speakers which listed for $ 2,900.00, and for awhile I though my speaker sounds much better than the Slant 6.

My verdict for this speakers would be.

a) Two stars for inferior electronics.
b) Five stars for the right electronics.

I've had my Slant 6's for around two years now and am very pleased with their performance. I'm currently using them in a bi-amped configuration with two Kinergetics KBA-380 amps in a Hometheater system using the Apogee LCR center and a pair of Ribbon monitors in the rear powered by a Chiro C-200. Bass is provided by a Chiro Mesa C-150 sub. The only problem I'm having is that I was told if you blow a speaker or need a part for your Apogee speakers you might as well throw them in the trash because ADS isn't providing any replacement parts at this time. This is bad news. In the past I've had a ribbon blow in my LCR while under warranty and actually had a semi hard time getting it replaced. This was while Apogee was still in business. This speaker was not blown due to over driving or any other misuse. All I did was power up my system and noticed their was nothing coming from the ribbon. They did replace it. If you have any info regarding replacemant parts for these speakers please forward this info to me. Thanks
