I have owned these speakers for seven years and am quite fond of them. Paired with a 12" powered subwoofer they make a very dynamic match, with the sub providing the "punch" and relieving the speakers of duty which they don't do very well anyhow. These speakers have a high quality crossover network with "contour" switches for both ribbon and woofer. These help match the speakers to the room - for well damped rooms with curtains, carpeting, sofas, etc use the high ribbon setting. For bare rooms with little damping, set the ribbon on low. My woofers are set to normal.
I run the preamp output to the sub and allow the sub to split the signals, sending the mid/highs back to the power amp and from there to the Apogees. The speakers can produce very adequate volume under these conditions without strain. And unlike the above writer, I feel that matching to a sub (a servo-controlled one) produces a very fine result.
Unfortunately, the Apogee company was recently sold to A/D/S, who closed them down. I hear that neither service not parts will be available. Sad. After listening to ribbons for seven years, I'd be very reluctant to go back to cones.

Recently I purchased a pair of Apogee Centaur. They sound better than Magnepans. I used to have Magnepan MG1 and MG2. This Apogee produce more detailed sound and better bass than the Magnepans.
I decided to sell my current ESS Heil AMT speakers and keep this Apogee. The ESS also produce wonderful sound, but I prefer the design of the Apogee.
I think this speaker is especially good to hear folk and classical music.
An excellent speaker in every aspects.

Strength:

Clear highs and mid-range. Superb on female vocals - try Mary Black, Dawn Upshaw. Violins are believable - like you are there at a live concert. Handles jazz and classical exceptionally well.

Weakness:

Too sweet with driving rock, although it could be more because i am using an Audio Research Tube amp and a very refined sounding Luxman CD player. I added a 12" subwoofer and this helped on the low output bass.

Great speakers for a great price. Bass is relatively accurate, but very low output requires a subwoofer. I added a subwoofer and the entire sound was lifted. I am going to add another 2 subwoofers, running one per speaker, and one for LFE on my home theater.
