Strength:

Looks good and on a scale of 1 - 10, sound is a solid 7.

Weakness:

Some weight there, aprox. 35 to 40 lbs. for the subwoofer, but maybe that is not a bad thing.

To clearify a few things from my last review. The unit is a Altec Lansing ADA 885 and it was the base unit/subwoofer that gave out after a short time. I understand the new version, ADA 890, has corrected the problems.

Strength:

They look good and on a scale of 1 - 10, I give these speakers a 7 for sound.

Weakness:

Not much interest from Altec Lansing through customer service or on line to help their customer base. They are going to loose business in future because of this.

I used the speakers aprox. 20 hrs. per week. I too had the base blow out after 8 months. When in use, the sound was not turned up more than half way.

Strength:

Powerful, raging bass and a distinctive surround feeling punched against you by the satellites

Weakness:

I can´t say anything is bad...maybe one or two rear speakers wouldn´t hurt...Otherwise it´s just a killer

The speakers are really good, by way the best speakers I´ve ever had, they´re better than my father`s giant in his living room. Try playing NHL 2002 with a loud volume so that you really hear the spectators constantly screaming for more. That´s what I call speakers...If you can afford them and I think many people can then this is a MustBuy Product. Five Stars I say!

Strength:

Powerful Bass, Good Control over features by remote

Weakness:

Only 4 main (speakers without the center channel)

Overall Good value for the money.

When I bought this ADA880 with my computer it was pretty much the best computer speaker system I found for the price. Overall sound quality is awesome, especially with DVD and an SB Live Soundcard.

My only dissapointment is that I thought Altec Lansing should have made the system a bit more powerful, like the updated THX model ADA885, which is about 50% LOUDER. Oh well...

Great features and compatibility with my comp makes this product top notch.

I'd highly reccomend either ADA880 or ADA885.

P.S. The showoff factor delivered (the sub especially) to friends is a quite nice bonus!

Strength:

The power, size, and sound quality. The remote also!

Weakness:

none

These are by far the best speakers for use with a computer that I have ever seen. There are two models, the ada-880 and the ada-885. the later is the new THX certified model. I have the earlier version the ada-880. I must say that it sounds just amazing listening to DVD's in true dolby digital on the computer. These speakers come with an 8" sub which puts out more bass than a lot of cheaper home systems. The whole sound range is very nice.

One problem is that they arent the easiest to set up as there are many controls for all the different levels to adjust. Another drawback is the price. For this system with dolby digital it is about $400 Can.

These speakers are for those who would like a powerful high end computer speaker that can match the sound quality of a hi-fi home system (although not the volume). I use it in for occasional dvd viewing as well as playing mp3's in prologic. It still provides the room shaking bass as it includes the 8" sub.

WOWOWOWOWOWOW -- I got a set of ADA-880s about 6 months ago and wanted to wait to check their durability, sound quality, etc... before posting a review... All I can say is I have heard every set of computer speakers made to date... Labtec, Klipsch, Boston Acoustincs, you name it... These are so much better than any model you can find... The subwoofer is absoulutely incredible and the satelites are very impressive. THESE POUND HARD, HARD, HARD!

Weakness:

I have heard people having trouble on this board with refurb sets... here is a clue... DON'T BUY REFURBS! -- You can get these new with a digital sound card included at www.computergeeks.com for under $150. One other weakness, the speakers have a faint hum if you crank them with no input... buy why would you crank them with no input? The remote works perfectly for when you want to CRANK THEM UP!

If I do every have any trouble with these... I will post a follow up... but belive me, what I have now is a very well built sound system that shakes my entire house. I would recommend you use these only if you have a sound card with a digital out... I think most of the morons that post bad reviews about these speakers don't even know what that is. Do your homework and you will find these to be the best bank for the buck... period.

Strength:

Detachable speakers for for good surround sound. Incredible loudness.

Weakness:

no center channel, sub maxes out at a point.

I got the ADA880s when i got my computer from Dell a couple years ago, and from what i have seen around, even the klpsich(i can never spell that) they are some of the best ones around. The THX certified Klpsich speakers that they have at Best Buy that are supposedly the best speakers for computer systems seems a little weak compared to the ADA 880's. With the base on the klpsich speakers you can only turn it to a certain level, where w/the ADA's when i have it at a resonable volume, you can have the bass up 1/2 way, and it thumps like you wouldnt believe. Not dissing klpsich or anything, i love their products, but for the money, i'd go with Altec Lansing.

These speakers are some of the best around, and when hooked up to a whole entertainment system, you can fill a whole house with thumping music.

Strength:

Powerful Bass, Four detatchable speakers, remote, and loads of options!!

Weakness:

Not true 5.1 Surround sound (no center channel but read on)

When I purchased my new comp from dell computer corp. I decided to cash out the extra cash and go for a cutting edge comp with the THX certified solution (very excellant choice as it so turned out). After harassing dell to ship my computer (Dell service is another review entirely, but anyway) I was pleasantly surprised to find a set of Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers with the computer! I hooked these bad boys up and proceded to do an audio check, in this check the speakers play a note through each channel and you adjust volume and such accordingly. These speakers are by far the greatest set I have ever owned. Unlike the ADA880's the bass is powerful and the overall volume is much louder. The fact that these are THX certified is an even better bonus! These speakers sound great regardless of what you are doing, playing Half-life CS, watching Saving Private Ryan, or just listening to the newest P-Diddy CD, these Speakers enunciate everything. From the pumping bass of MP3's to the bullets moving from one channel to the other in the Matrix.
However, there is one catch, these are not true 5:1 Dolby Digital Speaker, no center channel. What Altec decided to do was go the cheaper way and have the left and right channels make the center channel, which actually works fine in the long run, just turn up the volume and you don't even notice the difference.
Overall these speakers are awesome, if they had gone with the separate center channel it could have ended up costing 270$ more so Altec made the right decision. I totally recommend these speakers to any Audiophile. Only 4 though because of no 5:1 (Sorry guys! But don't let that stop you from buying these bad boys! They are sooooo worth it.)

Strength:

AWESOME clarity, remote control, great bass, loud for being 120 watt system.

Weakness:

Volume knob on speaker sometimes overly sensitive. No true center channel.

This review is for ADA885.

I'd just like to say a couple things in response to comments other people have made.

>>>As I said, unfortunately the subwoofer stopped working after about a month - I didn't notice for ages although there didn't seem to be much bass, the other speakers still work - but I've disconnected them pending sorting out repair/replacement.>>Ever tried to get anything out of Dell - even buying from them is near to impossible.>>overstock.com<<<

Do NOT buy these speakers from anyone besides Dell. Chances are that the business (not Dell) is selling the old, bad speakers. You can now buy these speakers for $200 from Dell, without buying an entire computer system.
