Advent Marble Floorstanding Speakers

Advent Marble Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

I bought this speaker at a discount. Makes an excellent satellite front or rear. European design with tweeter on bottom. Excellent imaging. Will put a lot of other satellites to shame.

Strength:

Well built, nice design, tight full sound

Weakness:

Havent found yet

These are a great sounding speakers and they will suprise you with the base responce. I really like the brackets which make mounting infinately versatile. I checked out many others (Klipsh, Boston, Niles, Polk, Yam, Energy) all at 250/350 per pair and non of them really thrilled me all that much.
I ran across these through a friend and have bought two more pair just to have them on hand before they disappear from Costco. There is no way to lose on these little dudes so give them a try. You wont be sorry.

Strength:

PRICE!!Mounting Bracket.

Weakness:

Not video shielded

I am using these as a HT setup. Couldn't justify spending hundreds more just to have the sound ruined by poor speaker placement in my odd shaped living room (Better speakers will come with the new HT)
For the price these are great, $50/pair at Costco. Bring them inside and damn they are bright but take them outdoors and that dissapears. Couple them with a sub for ultra cheap home theatre. Just don't listen to the Titanic suite on the Back to Titanic soundtrack. It's a very dynamic piece and will bring out such resonances that you will never want to listen to them again.

Strength:

Loved the mounting brackets. The sound is great with my Technics SA-GX910 Dolby Pro-logic DSP AV receiver.

Weakness:

none

For $49.95 at Costco, you can't beat these speakers. Every one was impressed after I hooked them up and hit the play button on "The Matrix." We had the walls shaking. Now I need a good yet low cost center channel.

I used the Audio source LS one/WT surround speakers for years and never new how bad they really were until I hooked these up.

Strength:

Price is right. Good functional bracket. Outdoor.

Weakness:

None yet, but nothing comparable to compare them with.

Excellent mounting bracket and quite good sound for such an inexpensive speaker ($75 for the pair). Looked at Infinity, Polk, Bose (blah) outdoor models, but couldn't pass these up for the price. I have had good luck with Advent Legacy fronts (at least 10 years old) so I wasn't worried when I saw the Advent name. I can now jam at the pool.

I needed some outdoor speakers and saw these at costco. They really sounded good for 50 bucks. I wasn't even going to listen to them, but was very surprised with their sound. My only complaints are that you can't crank em up to earbleeding levels and both speaker grills fell off from the hot sun baking them on the south side of my house (they have that old car stereo goo holding them on). My friends can't believe I got them for $50 and I can't either.

Strength:

Price, comes with mounting brackets, decent speakers 51/4 with poly cone and rubber surround, hard dome tweeter.

Weakness:

Bracket adjustments made either side to side or up and down but not both, also has 90 or 45 degree wall mount nothing else.

I initially was going to buy the Acoustic Research hc2 system that comes with 5 Edge satellites and a 12 inch sub but came across these satellites after listening to a pair of the edge speakers. These speakers are actually pretty similiar in build and sound to the AC speakers. The price is less than the AC edge when bought seperately but you can find the whole hc2 package for about the same price as these two pair of these advents and a decent sub. I have two pair of these speakers as satellites mated with a cerwin vega lw-15 sub and an older single bose 301 as a center channel. When judging sound based on what I had before the improvement is nothing less than great, the highs I was missing before are present now, they dont sound bright to me, I am primarily using them for my home theater powered by a Sony db940 receiver. Power handling is good , getting considerably louder than my old pioneer speaker, two 12" towers and small surrounds. It has been my experience that when judging speakers no two people have the same exact opinion on how good a speaker sounds. Alot of people seem to forget that how and where a speaker are placed will make a big difference on the sound, a room with alot of hard surfaces, such as wood floors...., will make a speaker, any speaker sound bright. Obviously better speakers can be found but not in this price range. As I said before these speakers are similar to other speakers found in compact hometheater systems in the $5-900 dollar price range. For my money I got two pairs of these advents and a larger more powerfull sub than I would have gotten otherwise. Always try to listen before you buy, but that is sometimes impossible in a rural area such as wyoming.

Sound

You know, I bought these speakers based on the reviews in this board and I must say that I am very dissapointed. This is not a flame; I just want others who read these reviews to get a difference of opinion.

These things sound like a cheap old car speaker playing out of a cheap platic box. The midrange is distored if not absent. The bass, while there, is very loose. The highs are so bright everything sounds like a symbol crash. I learned my lesson about bying speakers with-out first listening to them.

I may try opening the speaker box and stuffing it with some dacron filling and closing of the bass reflex port in an attempt to tighten up the sound a little, but I'm really not hopeful.

I should have gone with the Energy Tempest or even the Infinity Outrigger Juniors. While they are a bit more expensive, they sound a ton better.

Do yourself a favor . . . save your money, and buy a better speaker. Unfortunetly, this is one case where you get what you pay for.

Strength:

PRICE!!! Mounting bracket. Sound.

Weakness:

Bright sounding when played loud

I wanted and inexpensive surround sound system for the family. I was at Costco's and saw a $200 do-everything Pioneer receiver, KLH powered "sub"woofer and Advent Marbl speakers that were priced at $50 per pair. I have a pair of Audio Source surround sound speakers that I paid $20 for that sounded terrible. But what the heck. I owned the Original Advent and loved the sound, so I bought them. When I got home, I had no expections of any type of sound quality, but thought that the system will do fine doing double duty as a surround sound/home audio system (wife and kids can leave my hi end system alone now). Was I surprised (like everyone else) when I hooked it up! Using cheapo RatShack wiring everywhere, the sound that came out playing cd's on the Marantz DVD player was listenable!!! Very listenable! So much so, that I started to take out my cd's and listen to music!! What a "steal" I thought. This really can't be true! Surround sound for about $400?? So as a "goof" I decided to compare it's sound to MY system consisting of Parasound CD, Counterpoint SA3 preamp, SA2 headamp, SA220 power amp, Acoustat 1+1's electrostatic speakers, VPI/Koetsu analog front end, and everything hooked with MIT cabling. Of course, this system sounded better (and cost a HECK of a lot more than the other one). But for $400, I was highly impressed with the sound of this thing. Yes, the Marbl's will sound overly bright when pressed hard. And bass response is limited. Midrange is passable. Imaging is "ok". But again, compared to my several thousand dollar system, I actually COULD listen to it and enjoy the sound!
A "must" buy before they run out of them at Costco!! Great for small rooms, outdoors, surround sound, and even.. gulp..
main sound listening!
