Strength:

Nice design, loud bass, great sounding.

Weakness:

Corners chip/smash vey easily.

Wow these things kick for the price. $200 bucks for the pair at sears! For an 8" sub in these speakers, a whole hell of a lot of bass comes out. Very good sound also, focuses more on the mid range than the high treble, which personally I like. More bass, less treble. I would recomend these to anyone that is looking for a descent pair of speakers for the $$.

Strength:

Great sound and awesome looks. The bass is very clear and so are the mids and tweeters.

Weakness:

Nothing at all..

I bought 4 of these babies to use as Mains and rears and let me tell you that the sound they produce is impressive. I paid $599.90 for all 4 delivered at Puerto Rico. The bass is very good but you need good power for it even though they are very efficient at 90db sensitivity. I am matching my towers with the Acoustic Research PSC25 center speaker wich is from the old Performace Series which IMHO sounds better than the current C225PS. Let me tell you, having identical speakers all around makes a HUGE difference creating a seamless 360 degrees soundstage.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for great sound at a great price.

Strength:

They look awesom. Very good design. WOW!!! very deep bass for a single 8" driver, huge magnet. Incredible horn loaded tweeter. paid $129 a piece at sears. They sound awesome for music and they sound like they have built in powered woofers. I have yet tried these for home theater but i bet they will sound incredible.

Weakness:

I couldn't afford to get 4 of them.

These are a steal. Buy as many as you can. They are the best for their price. They will catch your eye and they are the sweetest sounding towers i have ever owned. They blow every other speaker in its price range away. I wish i could afford more.

Bass, clarity, and best of all, the price!!

Great speakers for the price! I bought them from brandnamez.com for $275/pair and they arrived without any scratches (amazingly).
They're hooked up to a Denon AVR-1600 receiver. I immediately tested them with a variety of music. The clarity is amazing. Classical music to classic rock is excellently reproduced. Good bass is also very evident. I considered the AR 328 with two 8'' woofers, but since I needed to stay in my price range, I opted for the 318's with one 8'' and I'm not displeased with the bass from them. They hit very low, making bassy music, such as rap, sound good with these speakers. Then, I tested rock/metal, and discovered they didn't do as wll as I had hoped. It must be because I turn up rock/metal very loud, and it just wasn't as clear as with the other types.
BUT, even though rock/metal is somewhat lacking, you cannot find a better pair of speakers for the price. Trust me, I looked. And for their use as a stereo system in my dorm-room, they're great. And if I were in the buying process again, I would definitely pick them again.

Strength:

Price, great sound for the money

Weakness:

None for me

I know it sounds like a broken record, but these speakers (if you can still find them) are GREAT for the money. I paid $85 ea. for them on closeout at Sears, and they sound great. I have JBL Music 1's as my rear channel surround speakers and a cheap Technics center channel (which needs to be replaced). I have all of this powered by a "modified" (see reviews) Technics SA-DX930, and I have no complaints about the sound of my system. Music, movies, even just TV sounds great from these speakers. I highly recommend them.

First hint of imaging in a budget speaker

Weakness:

wannabe

I was looking for an attachment for my Sears Mower when I saw these. I never thought of Sears as a place to purchase audio gear. I wasn’t shopping for stereos today.

I’d only read about AR but never gave them a drive. All I knew is that 60 bucks a crack was light in the pocket for popular towers, and that they had no leads to them for me to hear them. I thought, “What-the-hell. For 120 bucks the neighbors kid would love them if they failed me much” so I loaded them up.

This speaker has cabinet resonance, which creates a tiny reverberation that is sometimes mistakenly described as “Depth” in some of these reviews. I don’t know about Bass response as I tested these out of the box without making any adjustments to my already happily stationed sub. Above 5000k, the speaker is a tad bright if not tinny. The speaker is definitely over emphasized around 500 to 5000k ranges. There is a lot of mid in this speaker.

Sound staging is OK, no, pretty darned good if you are talking about the position of the musicians on the stage. I think this is due in part to the superb front baffle design. I know the nice imaging is a baffle design plus.

I haven’t rocked these things yet. I don’t think they can take Russ Freeman when he’s really loose. Don’t even know what I intend to do with them. Sure as hell won’t replace my Polk RT 2000s or my RT 7s. These speakers won’t stay in my living room.

You young guys wanna hear something good about them? At less than 200 a pair, they are stunning value. These speakers are musical and good looking. They will dust off any Fat Box Pioneer I’ve ever heard and Econo Technics or Emerson would be sent to the hopper when these guys come into the house. They are punchy and have a vibrance to them. I kinda like the reverberance on the Titanic Soundtrack or Robin Hood. Great for acoustics. Ok for rock, better for pop. By them for 200 a pair at 18, use them for 3 years, sell them for 200 a pair when your 21.

price, looks, bass, mids, and highs!

Weakness:

discontinued

man, these speakers sound good, and are very reasonably priced! I doubt they can be found anywhere any more, except used. But if you find them and want some nice speakers these might be your best choice for say < $300. They sound good at all frequencies and volumes. I have them paired with AR-215 rears and a Klipsch KSW-12(?) sub, and it works very for HT as well as stereo. I listen to classic rock mainly, and guitar/bass guitar come out sounding great. Their strength is mids, but bass is there and highs are smooth and warm (I would never describe them as bright...) Klipsch can be bright so I prefer AR and Polk highs, and these cost a bundle less than polks, so I chose AR.

Looks, price

Weakness:

Don't push them to hard, they can't take it.

I bought these at netmarket.com for 199.00usd per pair plus shipping. They arrived without a scratch. They were shipped doubled boxed I was very happy. They sound "o.k." and will make a nice pair of rear speakers once my Energy C-2's arrive next week. I would recommend them to any one due to the price. You just won't find floor standing speakers that sound better than these for the price.

Strength:

great value, subtle looks, impressive sound

Weakness:

none so far

I purchased these speakers about a week ago from sears. So far I have been amazed at the depth they deliver. The highs are crisp and clear and the bass is smooth and undistorted, although I prefer slightly less bass than what they deliver. With the jvc 500w dolby digital reciever I am using (rx-778v) the sound is just incredible. The bose 100's that I was using before sounded great, but are dwarfed when compared to the rich, full sound of the 318's.

Weakness:

packaging!!!

All I can say is wow! I have these bad boys running as surrounds, but have also used them as the mains for my 5 speaker system. The AR horns are unbelievably crisp, clear, and even, especially when packaged in a speaker for $199/pair (www.netmarket.com). When these were delivered, they had arrived before all other components, so I tested them on an Aiwa 100W bookshelf with that free cheesy speaker wire (not a suggested method). I was expecting a slight improvement over the normal speakers, but I was floored at how efficient these speakers are, and the bass! I had to turn off all DSP modes, all bass boost, and keep the volume below 1/8 full so that I wouldn't disturb my neighbors! Now they are being run in 5 ch stereo off a denon avr2800 (highly recommended). If you are looking at these as the cornerstones of a home theater/5 speaker setup, then think of 4 of them with a good AR center channel. I opted to have the PS328 in front, these in rear and the cs225 in center, and it rocks like no other system on this planet for under $1500! These speakers work well with low or high power, and can pump out rock, rap and classical equally well. At $199/pair they are cheaper than many bookshelf speakers, so splurge and buy 2 pair. You can't be unsatisfied unless you want to spend 2-3 times as much. Great sound, great value, great looks. (see my review of PS328s for more).
