Strength:
Great sound Tight bass Yamaha quality
Weakness:
This is a small to medium size room speaker. In bigger rooms, bass wouldnto be heard, and highs would isperse in carpeting, etc. Great speaker. I was sceptical at first - these were supposed to replace my Bang and Olufsen speakers. So, i just bought them because i wanted a complete ensemble: Yamaha 1978 amp, Yamaha Limited Edition 1978 tape deck, Yamaha Platinum 1978 Turntable, and recently purchased Yamaha CD changer and Yamaha speakers. I bought these, because my amp is 40 x 40 RMS, so i needed the speakers with 8 inch woofer, so that there wouldnt be much power lost. I hooked it up in Russia, when i came here with oxygen-free speaker cable (provide the clearest connection possible). I couldnt believe it. These are awesome speakers. One of the reviewers said, they have bad lows or highs. I have 1978 amp with 1978 equaliser on it, and after playing with for 5 minutes i've found perfect settings for my room, and my style of music. Strength:
Excellent value in sub $500 range, surprisingly musical 4" driver, high crossover produces low tweeter distortion.
Weakness:
Marginal 8" "woofer", flimsy build quality, excessively bright tonality. What hasn't been said about these speakers? True, they are neither beautifully made nor are they composed of the finest components. At the most, these are good, basic bookshelf speakers. But in a market where speakers below $300 generally sound like garbage, they are diamonds in the rough. As one reviewer has suggested, they lack imaging and substantial clarity. True, some voices sound distorted; these are very much treble-oriented. Based on my experience, however, the real question is whether one can hear the voices at all! Comparable, but somewhat pricier Sonys have virtually no midrange. Cerwin-Vegas sound warmer, but even at more than twice the price they are a far cry from models of imaging, clarity, and the like. JBL and Sony have an unnatural, muddy bass, with Sony being the worst offender. Sonys also have hideous levels of tweeter distortion. Even the pricier Polks are mediocre at best. While all these products appear to have more "presence", what they are really producing is a terribly "translucent" sound that favors bass frequencies over midrange and thus leaves the treble exposed/unblended. As a violinist with experience playing in orchestras and as a vocalist with experience in both large and small vocal ensembles, I am appalled at the inadequate performance across the dynamic range of most inexpensive speakers . Most musical sound, as it turns out, is in the midrange, with harmonic overtones lapsing into the higher range. Typically, high levels of bass are man-made and merely supplement the already present full range. Therefore, muddy bass reflex bookshelf speakers with substantial tweeter distortion and essentially no midrange output can't even begin to reproduce the full natural range of music. Cheap bass reflex speakers are by definition small, poor imitations of larger, more capable equipment. Unlike most of their direct competitors in this segment, Yamaha uses high crossover frequencies. Notably, the crossover point between the 8" and 4" is 2.5khz, which is the tweeter crossover point on most of those competitors' bookshelf speakers. The tweeter cuts in at 8khz. The result is a *relatively* clean, balanced sound that, while a bit too bright, is the most accurate that I've heard in this segment. If Yamaha swapped drivers and improved the crossover circuitry, the 6390 would be greatly improved, but it wouldn't retail for $100. And didn't they already do that in the HX series??? Size (A little wide forv bookshelf's-13") I replaced my Accoustic Research PS-216 speakers with a pair of Yamaha NS-6395's and have been very pleased. These are used as my primary speakers, and they are doing the job quite well!. Excellent base, midrange, and highs! Can't beat the price! Yamaha makes a good speaker. Strength:
great mid-range... good-looking, excellent imaging.
Weakness:
crackling tweeters with some music on a powerful amp, bass is not low enough for them to stand alone. These are a good set to run in a home theatre setup for a bedroom... but not as mains in a larger room. I use them in conjunction with a set of Dynaco A-25's to fill up the room, with a marantz 2216 receiver. very good deal for the price. |

Strength:
may easily outperform much more expensive speakers nice design excellent frequency response range tight, clean deep bass - sealed enclosure did the trick
Weakness:
for best results blace in smaller rooms Wow! At first, I just bought these speakers to replace my 1977 Fisher speakers. Just so my 1977 JVC amp would be functional. When I hooked them up...though my amp has 43 watt per channel RMS, I swear, these "cheap little guys" rocked the house. It was like a second coming for my system. It made my Bang and Olufsen system look...er...not-so-great (why did I spend 3000 pounds on it in the first place???). Well Yamaha IS Yamaha, no matter what. What made me buy them is my 1978 Yamaha's exclusive tape deck, only 5000 of which was made. After all these years nothing in it broke. Similar Products Used: Fisher JP605 |

Strength:
Excellent Highs and Midrange.
Weakness:
Not much.Need's bass boost at low frequecies. This speaker reproduces highs and midrange as good as any I've owned over the past 25 years. It suffers from the same problem as ALL small "acoustic suspension" speakers-no really low bass. However, if you have a good amplifier that will put about a 10 db bass boost at around 70hz ,they sound great in a small room.I have added an inexpensive Sony SAW-20 subwoofer and enjoy world class sound in a 12' by 12' room.Great buy for the $$ and would rate them at the top for an 8"- 3 way.BUY IT!! Price, $90 for a pair
Weakness:
Cheaply built. Too bright. They are 13 inches wide so kind of wide for bookshelf speakers. Cheap speaker clips on the back. After reading reviews here I bought four of these because they were so cheap. I have four old bookshelf speakerswith 8 In woffers that are about 20 years old and they sound much better then the 5290. They have too much highs that make them sound bright and a little weak in the base. I had to turn down the treble and turn up the base to get them to sound acceptable. I was hoping to replace my main speakers but will use one pair with our old receiver in my basement and will return the other pair. I would not recomend them for your main speakers but may be ok if that is all you can afford. They are a very efficient speaker so my be hard to match with another brand. |

Strength:
Price; fuller/richer sound.
Weakness:
The grilles...a little too "designed" for my taste. Listened to Wharfedale Diamond 7.2''s, Boston''s and JBL''s speakers, and found these to be the fleshiest, most authentic sounding, and certainly at the top of the quality in their price range. I have totally ecclectic tastes in music, and these go from opera to jazz to rap and sound super throughout the spectrum. I use them in an upstairs dorm bedroom along with a Yamaha RX-V420 tuner/amp and Yamaha 5-disk CD player, and the setup works great. Similar Products Used: Advent; Infinity; JBL |

Strength:
Small, 3-way design, cheap and gets the job done nicely.
Weakness:
The speakers are light, indicating small magnets. Though they look good, handle with care, they won''t take too much of a beating. I must say that I''m pleased with this little pair of speakers. I installed them for a client of mine who was also impressed. These are not high performace, THX certefied, blow you out of the water speakers. However, as far as a small set to put in the bedroom, they do the job quite nicely, and they are inexpensive. Other nice touches include the fact that the three way design allows for a fairly large woofer, and the fact that it is cheap, like so many bugets. I would definitely reccomend this speaker again.
