Strength:
I bought this pair discounted 70% for the experience. I pitted these against my fav L1 and L-20T3. The fit and finish seem blah. It’s the nice side of china cheap. After extensive listening, my L1 are clearly the better speaker. It’s got a larger woofer and a great tweeter. What is surprising is what this speaker can manage with such a smallish woofer. Great low end Weakness:
It doesn’t surpass other models from US made JBL bookshelves. Sending them back. Price Paid: 275
Purchased: New

I am a speaker junkie, and longtime audio afficionado. I got bitten by the audio bug by listening to my father play music on his vintage FISHER 500C as a child then teen, with those glorious Telefunken tubes imparting their magic in our living room every weekend. He loved classical, jazz, soundtracks, pop crooners, international, and Greek music. In high school in the late 70's, I bought my very own decent receiver, the Pioneer SX-780, and pair of used Magnepans. The mold was set. Now after many decades of listening and obsessing, I needed a pair of good speakers for my office and Ham Radio room. I heard about these, and was floored when I listened to them for the first time! I threw everything at them. Complex symphonic and orchestral music, jazz, electronic, rock, female and male vocals, etc., and they always put a big smile on my face! Sound reproduction is seamless, natural, and detailed. Everything a great bookshelf speaker should do, the 530's deliver on. Then there is the 'X factor' that makes this speaker magic. Music sounds so lively, engaging, and believable played through these fine instruments! After all, isn't this the 'holy grail' of listening? I've driven them with everything from tubes to solid state, and it all sounds phenomenal. Today, I listed to Sonny Rollins' 'Saxophone Colussus' on my 530's, and unknowingly shed tears of joy, given how incredibly real and present every nuance and timbre of his saxophone came across! As for the unconventional looks (for some), I think these are works of art, and utterly beautiful to behold. I get comments from my house guests all the time. In summation, these speakers are magic! JBL's superb engineer, the great Greg Timbers did a formidable job with these, and surely knocked it out of the ballpark with the JBL Studio 530! I will cherish this pair of great speakers for the rest of my life. |

Everybody who read the reviews about this speaker, for that matter, every product that is made, finds either good or bad experiences.

Unlike everyone who seems to gush over these speakers, I certainly did not. I've also learned not to trust what hifi mag since they raved about these. They weren't offensive sounding, but really not great at all. They do have a nice treble and good integration between mid tweeter but the problem is with the mid/bass. There is just no body, no sense of scale. I really wanted to like them.. I really did! |

JBL Studio 530: About as good as it gets, or, the Willie Nelson of bookshelf speakers.

The JBL Studio 530 caught my eye due to it's style and the horn loaded tweeter. I had avoided horn loading of tweeters on affordable speakers due to brightness I have heard. I had also read good things about JBL's top of the line speakers with vertical horns. The price was right so I had to give them a listen.
