Strength:

Very crisp, very clean sound.

Weakness:

They're too big to be called bookshelf and too small to be called full sized. Difficult to place for that reason.

I give these speakers my highest recommendation. Certainly they won't compare to a set two or three times their cost, but within their price category, I could not find better. I reviewed /many/ brands. I returned them all, including the Bose 501 floorstanding speakers that cost much more, and these S38s were the clear winner (no pun intended). If you are looking for a set of good speakers in this price range, there ought to be it.

Together with the S-Center and the Yamaha YST SW160 sub these make as formidable a speaker solution as you'll find for the price.

Don't buy at $500

AS a bose and jbl user, I am glad it gets so high rating. Go and look at bose review, they got average 3 rating cross the board,no matter low end or high. Sorry Mr. Bose, you need to find out what's going on.I heard your people have too much party, get pay too high and doesn't work that hard.
I wish I can work for you.
THis S38 is well built. Good material. Not mention great sound. I love it.
If you a lot of good reviews, you can't go wrong.
BTW I didn't wrote any bad review for Bose.

Strength:

Mids, highs, clarity, quality construction

Weakness:

Base is OK.

This is my first pair of quality speakers, so you can take my review with a grain of salt. Based on the reviews here, I purchased the pair from www.etronics.com for $296 + shipping.

I'm very happy so far. The sound is crisp and clear, the volume can go as high (and higher) than I would ever want, the bass is adequate, though bass lovers will need a subwoofer. Sounds great with Digital 5.1 sound with the JBL S-Center and the Matrix playing. My wife thought the phone ringing in the opening scene was our home phone!

Two issues: Can anybody recommend a pair of stands? Email me at sdennis@gazette.net.

BTW, I'm using Pioneer DV-333 DVD/CD player, 409 Receiver connected with optical digital cable and 16-gauge no-name speakerwire.
