Strength:

Sound Clarity (try soundtracks with different sounds at the same time)

Weakness:

Paper cones are great. But you do have to buy a powered SubWoofer to go with them. Then, all you have to do is pump up the volume! They will bring down the house.

There is a common mistake often seen as people start judging Bose equipment. I'm not going to say what it is. I will just say that Bose speakers require a very powerful Amp and enjoy working juiced up to 3/4 of Max volume. You just can't go easy on them. You must remember that Consumer equipment from Bose derives from professional/durable equipment. My amp's volume goes from minus 80 to plus 10. I'm only satisfied when I take it to -15. I can hear the lamps buzzing (when they are on) on the latest Bond movie. It's truly amazing. Both thumbs up!.

Strength:

1) Outstanding bass sound for a small enclosure (of course they will distort like any other speaker when pushed to their absolute limits) 2) Wide stereo image and great surround presence when playing any type of music, ideal for DVD, Sony Playstation, MP3's, etc. 3) Great sound for the money. 4) Reasonable warranty period

Weakness:

1) Paper cones....a little bit disappointed when I removed the grilles for inspection. 2) I think that they could have included electromagnetic-shielding

After reading alot of these reviews, I can't help but laugh and realize alot of these reviewers expect too much for a $300 pair of speakers. C'mon people! These aren't $1,000 speakers. Back in Dec' 2002, I had purchased a pair of Bose 301 Series V Loudspeakers. I must say there are impressive for their size...big bass response with a very wide soundstage and a great surround presence. I am currently using these with a Yamaha RX-V430 AV Receiver and an APEX AD-600A DVD Player. The best sound possible from these speakers can be achieved following the illustration in the packaging. I tried different spacing and heights....it simply depends on the size of your room.

Strength:

I looks neat! handles high volumes, strong bass for a bookshelf

Weakness:

muddy, loud quify midrange overpowers mediocre highs

very disapointing. I am very farmiliar bose acusimass sytem, so I was excited to hear a bigger bose speaker. In this case bigger is not better. In fact, I would argue that this is one of the worst speakers in its price range!

Strength:

good range free

Weakness:

sometimes muddy

These speakers were given to me by my brother, and I throughly enjoy them. I use them for a lot of classic rock; rolling stones, the dead...etc, and i think they perform great. While listening to some hip-hop at high volume the bass sometimes sounds muddy, and with jazz, the highs sometimes sound tinny. All around, though, I like these speakers a lot. I watch a lot dvds on them, and they soundtracks and fx pretty well.

Strength:

Great big, room filling sound, without taking up the whole room

Weakness:

ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!

Great Sounding speakers from a small cabinet. When they are on at a high volume, you look for huge bulky speakers. It seems as if when they are hooked up to a high quality reciever, such as a DENON(Which mine are), you can turn the volume up and up and up some more. These speakers are phenomenal. They are used as my rear speakers, with the VCS-10 center channel, and the 601 towers in the front. I paid full price for all of the products and it was well worth it.

Strength:

Handle high power well.

Weakness:

none found YET Key word Yet

These speakers are great. I didn’t pay full price but for 160.00 brand new in the box I couldn’t beat the price. I would recommend going with at least 100 watts per channel and a fairly meaty wire 14g seems to work well. I push mine with an onkyo av unit pushing 125 watts per channel. I have not been able to turn them up all the way. It almost seems like I find myself asking just how loud do the go. (Distortion free might I add.) I use the pair for fronts with the Bose center channel and 201s in the rear. I really can’t comment on bass. I have 2 15s powered by their own onkyo amp. I have turned the onkyo bass amp off and tried listening to them but lets be realistic they are 8” bookshelves not 15” floor standing. Last but not least Bose are a strong well-made speaker. They are pricey if bought at full price. Look for better deals cause they are out there.

Strength:

The 301 is considered the most popular (largest selling) bookshelf speaker. Can this all be due just to marketing hype? Don't believe it. Good home speakers easy to live with on a variety of different music types.

Weakness:

Not built for "stick out" sound in the showroom or the living room. Don't have that LA studio monitor sound.

The new Series V may represent an improvement in tems of tweeter quality (these are paper but have the hard plastic dust cap similar to the jewel cubes used in the Acoustimass products. Actually, crossovers are a weak point in any but the most expensive speakers where great care is taken to preserve phase response between drivers. The fewer parts, the better, assuming you can deal with the other variables. Bose has stuck with what works for them, while hordes of competitors in their consumer audio space have come and gone. I use their pro sound equipment which is really the profit center of the company. I recently did a comparison of noise cancelling head phones. Yes the $100 ones work, but though expensive, the Bose Quiet Comfort were lots better. Set the 301s up at the right height, the right distance from the wall with a good amp, and enjoy something you don't get with standard boxes at $300 a pair -- balanced sound and a realistic sound stage. Over the years, listeners have become acustomed to "loudness curve" audio - over emaphasized highs and lows. Some speaker makers program this into their "voicing" so the sizzle, tinkle, boom and thump will stand out in the show room. If that's what you want, the 301s may not be for you. In any event, the limits of 8-inch woofers and 2-inch tweeters for a given box size are determined by physics, Theil Small paramaters and Fletcher-Munson curves. If you want better sound, go for MUCH better (and much more expensive). In the $300 range, room size and other variables are as much a part of things as anything the manufacturer does. The best advice is to try (if you can) before you buy, and get what sounds good in your home. And don't be fooled by tweaks who will tell you capacitors have a "sound", that $500 line cords will reduce digital "jitter", and that audio interconnects have a polarity sense.

Strength:

good for entry bookshelf speakers. sounds good for music and home theatre but there are other great bookshelf speakers at the same price range.

Weakness:

i think you can't crank the volume at high levels. sound gets distorted if played with higher volumes

i got this over ebay auctions before thinking it was one of the best speakers in the market. but i was wrong there are a lot better speakers now. but don't get me wrong, this speaker is good for music and home theatre as well. it can be used as an entry level but a little bit expensive if you buy at retail prices.
