I've been very happy with my 301 IV. I have them mounted on the wall about 6.5' off the floor. They look good and sound great. Placement of these speakers is very important to get the full benefit of the direct/reflective system. The wall mounting made a big difference in the way they perform. For the dollar, these are a good buy.

Strength:

look good & all for the price of a pair of shoes :)

These r very position-sensitive speakers. with the proper positioning, they sound very good. Of course not the best, but for less than 400 bucks..they're cheaper than a pair of shoes...so all u reviewers who keep harping about the prices...GO SUCK AN EGG!...:) WEBMASTER...U SHOULD DO LIKEWISE :)

If you look at the people who dont like the 301,s they also dont like the 401,501,601,701,901, and there new speakers that just came out. These people dont own any of them.I'm 35 and have owned many speakers sound dynamics, infinity, audio research ,jamo, mirage,b&w,paradigm and many more. If your going to buy new speakers compare 10 different ones when your done with your test you will have the speakers that best suites you good hunting

Strength:

Great performance for price, sound great, love the acoustics.

Weakness:

Don't look very cool.

I just upgraded from a poor shelf system (panasonic AK17). This are a vast improvement. Good sound, great bass. Sure it may not be as good as a 1000 set, but 320 for two is great price/performance. They get very loud, especially because they are very effecient. Sending 30 watts to each speaker is very loud, but not loud like noise, still good sound quality. I love them and would probably buy boses again.

sound, construction quality

I needed a pair of decent bookshelf speakers and had owned an older pair of 301's a long time ago (which were decent) so I mailordered these without listening to them first (I know...). They are low quality, poor sounding speakers. Bose should be ashamed of themselves for selling these pieces of crap for $318! No matter what you drive them with or where you position them they sound like the $79 KLH's you buy at Costco. They are feather weight and the cabinets resonate. I think the MBA's must be in charge of Bose engineering now. My advice: Just Say No!!

Strength:

clear vocals, wide stable sound - soothing

Weakness:

placement - sour graping bose bashers

If someone were to tell me the AM series from bose sounded bad, I'd agree.
If someone told me AR, POLK, Jamo speakers sound good, I'd agree.
But if someone were to tell me that the 301's sound like crap compared to similarly priced ar, jamo & polks, I'D DISAGREE! bec. he/she would be lying!

These are perfectly good speakers, not the best, but definitely worth listening to. They sound good with yamaha amps & also best perform when u have marble or genuine wooden parquet floorings. They truly come alive :)
Of course, this doesn't mean they sound bad on carpeted surfaces *L*. Overall , they sound good!

Whats with all the bose bashing?
This is a brilliant product.
I have these babies plugged up to my Onkyo TX-DS575X and they sound amazing.
One of my friends has a Marantz + B&W system running, and my system beats it hands down, (and i paid about 1/3 the price)
here is a run down of what i have
Obvioulsy the Bose 301 series IV
Bose 201 as surround speakers(also series IV)
Onkyo TX-DS575X
Polk Audio PSW 350
Sony Dvd player
JVC 6 head vcr
I would pay $800 for these speakers, the mid-range is perfect, the bass is not at all boomy, even with by sub-woofer switched off. the treble is not at all attacking.
I could have bought KEF, B&W, or Paradigm. but in the audition these sound a whole lot better.
If you are someone who actually apreciates sound quality, buy them.
if on the other hand you are brand driven, and wouldnt buy bose if your life depended on it, then go out and listen to them, you will change your mind, i guarantee it.
So I advise you actually listen to these speakers before handing out any critism, and for those of you who put up bad reviews, if they are so bad why did you buy them in the first place?, dont you audition the stuff before you buy it?

In case my last review doesn't make sense, it was in response to a review by AAA (which has since been removed).
Anyway, before spending your money on Bose, shop around somewhere besides Circuit City. I guarantee you'll like something else better in the same price range.

I guess I will swallow my pride and tell all of you that I have seen the light and have returned my Bose 301's to Crutchfield. Although these speakers DID sound decent while watching movies, I was disturbed by what took place earlier this afternoon. I was listening to some CD's and decided to crank it up and see what these speakers could do. BIG MISTAKE!!! I have never heard so much distortion in my life. I only had it cranked about half way on a piece of crap Pioneer Pro-Logic reciever. I am not even pushing over 85 watts! I do not belive their rating of 150 peak watts per speaker. I have decided on a on a pair of Infinity RS 3's. I am building a piece at a time and decided that this would be a good place to start. I am warning everyone out there, pass on this speaker. Go with Infinity, Polk, Klipsch, anything. Although movies sounded halfway decent, the musical capabilities of the Bose 301 is a complete joke and a waste of time even to hook them up. Two speakers is being generous. Thanks to the previous reviewer who set me on the right path.
