Strength:

nice mounting

Weakness:

weak

I bought these speakers off the net, going on the Bose name. They were used in pairs as the only speakers in my small room. Mounting was very easy. But I was very disappointed when I first turned them on and noticed no noticeable bass. They are coming off the wall today.

Strength:

Great size. Mounting brackets included. Perfect for surround speakers. Fill the air with sound.

Weakness:

none yet

People seem to not like these speakers, but they are absolutely wonderful as surround speakers. They're nice and small with brackets included. Anyone that says anything about a lack of bass obviously hasn't looked at the small size of these babies. They don't sound as good as three-way speakers, but they fill the air with sound better than any three-way speaker I've ever heard. And their cheap (especially for me!). Just for reference, my system consists of a pair of Wharfedale SP-83's as front speakers (great speakers also, by the way), a Pioneer VSX-D509S A/V receiver, a pair of the 161's as surrounds, an Optimus SW-12 passive sub, and a Wharfedale SP-Center that should be arriving in a couple of days.

Strength:

Great disperal of sound, Great looks.

Weakness:

NONE

I had to replace an out of date pair of surrounds and aesthically I needed small and unobtrusive type of speaker. The Boses 161 fit perfect what a difference in sound, I like the design very small, but lots of multi-directional sound for the money I could not find a better surround speaker if you dont have space.

Strength:

good price, comes with brackets and very good sound for rear surround

Weakness:

none to date

I have wanted to replaced my Infinity rear surrounds with speakers that created a better rear surround ambience. After looking around at various options I settled on the "new" Bose 161 speakers. They are ceiling mounted as LS and RS complemented by Boston dipole speakers for EX channel. Given my room configuration and mounting location (rear wall / near ceiling) the Bose 161''s certainly do the trick. The surround sound (left and right discrete) are now much more evident and rear effects are more natural sounding. Sound seems to spread out across the room as it comes from each channel. The Bose provide good high and mid frequency surround sound response and have enhanced my existing system. For the record my amp is a Pioneer Elite driving Infinity left, right and center speakers with Bose and Bostons in the area. System is supported by an Advent 15" down firing subwoofer powered by a 500 watt Sunfire amp.

Strength:

Size

Weakness:

Extremely Bright, very poor sound quality in comparison to competitors offerings

I do not own these speakers, I sell them (along with many other brands and other home audio equipment). These are a complete joke of a speaker, even given their moderately low price. Rear speakers are usually an interesting dillema, you want good sound but you don''t want to see them. So manufacturers come up with several small designs. This is one of the worst that I''ve seen. Way too much emphasis on high frequencies (like most of the Bose line) with little to no midrange or bass. No, I am not expecting small speakers to pump out loads of clean bass, but there are speakers this size near this price that do a much better job. Check out Polk Audio''s RM1300''s at $200/pair (the satellites of the RM6200 surround package are available separately) which are smaller and sound better or the Infinity US1''s, also $200/pair, which are a little larger but compensate with improved midrange and bass.

Strength:

Bi-directional speakers, brackets included, sounds great from ceiling mounted location, overall price

Weakness:

Not as full as sound as 3-way speaker systems

After much searching for a nice set of WHITE COLORED front and rear surrounds, I ended up with the 161''s. For the price, they are a great buy. (wall brackets are included). I paired them up with a Sony 120W sub and Center Channel. Once I "tuned" the sub correctly, the system sounds great. They sound much better than the Bose cube systems. These are standalone speakers which do NOT require then to run through a sub like some systems. They connect directly to the receiver. Admittedly, they do not sound as full as some high dollar systems, but for the cost - they exceeded my expectations.
