Strength:

Brand name.

Weakness:

Only sound passable with other Bose speakers.

This speaker is incapable of producing accurate sound.
I heard it being used as surround speakers with
the dual cube speakers for front L/R/C. These speakers
are a real improvement over the AM modules. Unfortunately
the improvement is like going from a clock radio to a
cheap elevator speaker. The only way anyone could think
they were worth a crap is if they are used with other
Bose speakers that, of course, sound worse.

At moderate volumes (not even at "theater reference"
volumes), these things rattle their cheap plastic boxes
like crazy on bass. I say "bass", but really these can't
play true "bass" now can they? They rattle while *trying*
to play bass. I don't know if its the rattle or not, but
they also distort low-mid to bass frequencies very badly.
Maybe its just the rattle of the box getting in the way...
On the plus side, they DO come with brackets....those
are worth more than this speaker, however. Plus, if you
already have Bose speakers, your knuckle head friends are
going to laugh because you didn't spring for the AM cube
modules all the way around (you dork!). After all, you
only bought Bose for the name brand, right? Please don't
tell me you bought *after* hearing them!!!!

A few years ago, I bought a set of three of these speakers for the rear surrounds and center speaker. All three of these speakers were awful. I have replaced all three of them. There are much better speakers out there for $150 a pair.

If you are thinking about buying any bose speakers keep thinking and don't do it. For $150 you could buy a pair of paradigm micros or spend another $50 and get a pair of paradigm titans. At least read the reviews on the paradigms before you waste your money on these speakers.

Efficiency

I've bought these speakers instead of a pair of 101's, because i couldn't find those anymore. First I didn't want them, because I didn't really like the looks, especially the fact that both left and right speaker look the same, with the driver on one side.

But when I heared these speakers, I was really surprised. I'm used to big jamo and even big canton speakers, so i was affraid that these speakers, especially in the low end, would sound terrible. Listening to them on a Marantz class A amp really proved there's nothing wrong with this speaker. Low end is very sufficient (and deep, the far-away-port seems to work excellent), without getting the impression that mid's and high's are being forgotten by the engineers. Of course you cannot feel the bass, but it is there. And because this is a 1-way system, vocals sound better than ever, because there are no cuts in the frequency-range for seperate bass/mid/high speakers. I've found out that you should not use them with amps who artificially try to boost a deep bass, because that sounds overdone very quickly with these speakers. And Bose says 10-80 watts recommended amplifier power. I wouldn't go further than say 50, and don't play too loud.

The construction of the speaker is fairly ok, but i wouldn't want to drop them. At 3.4 Lbs a speaker they don't seem heavy, but don't forget that the housing isn't wood. So about 2.8 Lbs remains for the driver, which, for a 4,5" one, isn't bad at all. It really has a solid magnet. And for all the people who don't own the speaker or haven't looked to well, these aren't paper drivers. I don't know what they are made of, but not paper.

Overall these speakers really please me, although I wouldn't buy them in the Netherlands in retail shops, because they run at about 240 USD a pair here. I got them for 100, because the particular shop was changing from owner, which really was a good deal. I now use them with my computer, and there they really outperform my old JBL control 1's in osund quality(especially in low-end). The jbl's have more power though.

I bought a pair of these at the outlet mall about an hour away from my college. I wanted them for surround speakers for my Yamaha Rxv 393 reciever. My fraternity brothers and I think that they sound awesome in my little setup. I have a pair or Yamah 636's up front and the bose's placed just behind the couch on the window sill, not the best place to but them but still they perform well. When playing video games they really help fill the room. They also sounded awesome when I was listening to so classical music in the concert hall mode on the reciever. I could not be happier with them. If you have a small to medium sized room and need surrounds these babies are awesome and at $99 bucks they were a steal.

Strength:

size for mounting

Weakness:

plastic, connections

I guess I can't complain since they were free. I wouldn't recommend them unless you are creating a surround system in your apartment bedroom. They sound a little to high for me. I understand that they are surround but the pitch is just....high. Plus those friggin spring clips I can't stand those on any speakers but like I said they were free. I will be replacing them soon. Plus if you are buying speakers please don't buy because of a name. Even major manufactorers make cruddy stuff every now and then.

Strength:

cheap

Weakness:

poor quality construction, no bass

I bought these a while back to use as rear speakers. I paid 50 dollars for them being that they were display models. They are decent speakers for fifty dollars, but I would not pay more that that for them. They are very clear sounding with crisp highs. The midrange sound is lacking, with the low end being nonexistant. The construction throughout is to say the least cheap. I expected more considering that they retail for around 150. They are made out of plastic, use spring loaded conectors and are feather lite. I am replacing them soon with AR 2-ways. If you are looking for a resonable set of speakers for around 100 bucks, these are decent, but there are alot better speakers out there for the same price.

Strength:

great sound for size

Weakness:

the highs are a little, well Bosey

sad to say next to the jewel cubes these are the best sounding bose speakers. Personally i would not really recommend them to anyone for any reason, but for the bose lemmings and for people who are just uninformed about real hi fi speakers, they are i guess tolerable. But the 200 300 and 500 series sound terible i never heard anything that bad in my life. But the 100's sound good for bose and i was a little shocked. the only reason why i am giving them this much of a high rating is because they are bose and i expect so little of them, but they proved me wrong

Strength:

looks (kind of)

Weakness:

only good for one thing.

Bought these about 4 yrs ago. Didnt know what I was doing then, I guess that they were the cheapest thing that I could find for a rear channel. Do not even attemp to use these for a front or main channel, they sound horrible. But using these as a surround speaker they don't do to bad. But you'll really notice the differance in the rear if you use a better quality speaker. What do you expect from bose and for spending 150 bucks.
