B&W DM601 S3 Bookshelf Speakers

B&W DM601 S3 Bookshelf Speakers

DESCRIPTION

A compact bookshelf / stand-mount speaker, the DM601 S3 combines a 165mm (6½-in) woven Kevlar® cone bass / midrange driver with a Nautilus tube-loaded metal dome tweeter.

Retaining the double skinned baffle construction of its predecessor, the cabinet features extra internal bracing for reduced coloration. Flowport ensures clean bass with good attack that remains more consistent with level compared to simpler designs.

The speaker is an ideal solution for smaller rooms. Combine it with the LCR60 S3 centre speaker in an attractive, high quality yet unobtrusive home theatre system.

At this sort of price level they leave the compertition standing. I auditioned Mission m73i, Acoustic Energy Evo One, monitor audio bronze b2, kef Q1, and Whafedale 8.3....i chose these! They kind of look like they sound...bloody good! Don't bother bi-wiring these....theres no point i listened to them bi wired, and with a single more expensive cable and the single more expensive sounded better (QED Silver Ana)

Strength:

Well balanced sound Clear highs and ample lows Quality for the speakers is superb Binding posts are ready for bi-wiring

Weakness:

Suffers on the low-end frequencies compared to 602s.

This is my latest acquisition and I've been using them as surround speakers. For my front speakers, I'm using the 602S3's. When I tested them first, I thought they sounded the same with 602s. The clears are high and well balanced. The only difference is in the low frequency. I've tested them side by side and noticed the bass much better than 601s. You can feel the thump in 602s but with a great sub, these speakers will be great too in home theatre and stereo uses. You get the same Nautilus technology for the speakers producing a clear and crisp sound without the strain. For surround sound uses, they'll do the job. Highly recommended too.

I was literally blown away by these little overachievers. These can hold their own against multithousand dollar monitors, including the Nautilus 805's. What a find! Thanks, B&W for making me re-evaluate the cost/performance factor.

First of all i'd like to thank audio review for giving us this great site. When my black dm601s3 came about 1-1/2 month ago, I was impressed by the build quality and the fit and finish of this speakers. I was amazed by how clean and good looking they were specially with thier grills off, believe me, they are better looking in person than on the web or magazines. I am using them now as rear speakers in a multi channel set up with my old and trusty cdm1se in front. I must point out though, that I have two rooms where i could listen to music, My main listening room (also my bedroom) and the living room. my main room is equiped with home theater gears, the living room is stereo only but connected to a tv and some video and audio sources. When it came, I hooked it up directly to the living room system. after warming them up, I was happy about what i heard, i noticed right away that the treble was very clean and effortlessly high and the bass solid and adequately low for thier size. knowing that i'll just gonna use it as rears in the main room, I could have just moved it there so that i could enjoy it as rears right away. But i couldnt help compairing it to my cdm1se, so I took out the cdm1se to the living room and did what I wanted. Happy and impressed was I was about the 601s3's sound, they could not hold a candle againts the (all together now) cdm1se. although i dont like the word much, I dont refer to my self as an audiophile for nothing. because when the two were compared and even before that, I could hear that the frequency between the 2k and 4k region in the 601s were too shut in,resulting in an unvolving sound and not so good driver integration.I may be wrong or right but In my way of thinking, I think this is because B&W set the x-over freq. too high in 4khz. I think it is over the limit for the mid bass driver in which in my thinking also is at a more coventional 3khz. even if it measured ok, in my ears, somethings not quite right in that particular region. that is why you can,t judge speakers by spec's alone, you have to trust your ears always. The other things i noticed between the two is that the 601's bass is more colored even when the ports were plugged shut, this is due to thinner walls and the enternal dimentions, i think. it also have lesser power handling than my old speakers. I'm not implying that the 601s are bad, in my honest opinion, they're really good,in fact, I find the high treble of the 601s3s cleaner than that of the cdm1se's, its just my fault that i compared it to a way more expensive pair and that i decided to put out a full disclousure kind of review based on my opinion and flawed observation, no body is perfect, for all we know I might be wrong. the differences were actually and practically very small, have I not been an audiophile, I would'nt have noticed or wrote about it. But for its price class, nothing could touch it. Once again, i'd like to thank audio review for this great web site were we could get our opinion expressed in a proper way, thanks.

First of all I would like to say how great audioreview.com is. Without this site my audio purchase decisions would be much tougher. After looking at, and listening to, literally dozens of speakers I narrowed my search down to the Paradigm Monitor series, or the B&W 600 bookshelf series. Both lines have their strengths. The deciding factors were the build quality of the B&W's, the locality of the store, and the price. All of these speakers sounded great. Between the 600, 601, and 602, there were minor differences. Ultimately the 601 was the best reviewed speaker, and the best combination of price and performance.

I bought bose 201 IV(I paid $108 for it, a good deal) and a 10 inch harmon kardon subwoofer, I thought those should be good enough for a poor student like me. But I just feel the bose is lacking something...can't really tell. So I decide to go try some expensive speakers at expensive store. The sales man take me the the B&W show room and played a violin cd on 601 s3, after I listen to it for about 20 seconds, I take out my credit card and take it home, and return the junk speaker(bose) right after I get home. The B&W's 601 s3 is just amazing, the detail, the accuracy, the sharp image.....

Strength:

Great looks, natural balanced sound, build quality is excellent

Weakness:

None that I've found

I actually purchased 4 of these to use as fronts and surrounds in my surround system along with the B&W LCR 60 for my center channel and the ASW650 for my sub. Previous to this I had purchased a similar Polk Audio system. And while I liked the sound of the Polks I noticed that after a while my ears began to grow fatigued. The Polks started seeming a little bright and after a few days I couldn't listen to them for very long without noticing this. My ears do tend to be sensitive to this, so the Polks may work OK for some people. Anyway, I took those back and went shopping. I ended up with the B&W's and have never looked back. The sound is so natural and balanced and they have been able to handle everything I throw at them without breaking a sweat. Both movies and music are excellent. The build quality for each speaker is supurb. Just taking off the grille cloth and looking at the structure of the cabinet gives you a feeling of quality. And it shows in the sound they reproduce. I could not be happier with this speaker setup.

Strength:

Mid, high, and sufficient bass weight. As well as able to handle complex recording.

Weakness:

Bass can be lightweight for some taste. But, anyway I'm sure the right subwoofer can fix this.

I tested Triangle Titus 202 and 601 S3. Both excel at analytical capability and the way they convey the music, however I felt that titus high was sharp enough to pierce my ear. Despite the remarkable transient in comparison to 601 S3. My home set up is Rotel RA 971 MKII and Marantz CD6000 OSE, both have open character as well as warm sounding component. 601 S3 combines really well with them, together they are very sweet as well as able to create ambience. Which made me reviewed all of my cd's collection. One thing to remind, they're sounding very honest, every poor recording would be spot on.

Strength:

Sound clarity is outstanding, vocals are dreamlike, highs and mids are near perfect.

Weakness:

Too perfect for old recordings - I can't listen to my old Chet Baker without a lot of Hiss (Not noticeable on my old speakers but neither was the good stuff). Lack of deep bass would be a problem without a subwoofer.

Purchased the 601 S3 in Oct. 02... I am forever ruined with respect to listening to other stereo's now! It is hard to keep from constantly putting down other speakers when subjected to them -- even "good speakers." I was never so interested in really listening to music as I am now...
