I love these speakers and have for 10 years. I replaced a set of Paradigm monitors (floor standing with 2 6 inch drivers and a 1" tweeter). Best speakers I have heard for under $600. Imaging is great and highs are crystal clear. As for the bass comments, I must disagree. Maybe it is my set up. Onkyo M-504 and Carver preamp and NAD turntable, but these things can make the 20x16 room they are in shake. I have heard them in a home theater set up and feel they may be a bit bright but for two channel they are outstanding.

Strength:

beautiful designe, clear sound, excellent build, highly recomended.

Weakness:

none that i have experience

Excellent boxes for the money, clear sound, that you may even hear the drops of water with no distortion, i am very happy with them, i have them connected to my amplifier Marantz pm 17 mkII Ki signature with a cd player Denon dcd 2700 and the sound is really from above ! specially acoustic music from Windham Hill and space ambience music from Brian Eno and Steve Roach.

These are award winning speakers from 1999 and they really are !

Strength:

Warm and sweet midrange and high frequency too with a good balanced cable.

Weakness:

Bass lacks in definition and strength but thats all.

Not for use in stereo systems, they are poor in impact and definition, but if you use them in a Home Cinema thats another story,in that case they are fantastic and a bargain, you feel part of a movie and in his action,a warm sound, good treble but low bass, but with a good subwoofer there is no problem. Take a chance and listen in A/V System, they dont dissapoint you.

Strength:

Clear and even handed, without the grill it looks eveen better. Made in a real country where people still have some workmanship.

Weakness:

I am cheap so I'll say price.

Well as the Gent at the start of this Web article stated break these puppies in. I am very happy with these speakers. My friend has the top of the line Paradigms or how ever you spell it, and they stink compared to these beautiful speakers not to mention his speakers are the size of a baby purple elephant vacuum cleaner. I believe that your source of music has as much to do with the over all impression of these speakers as does the room you are in. I tested the cheaper and newer B&Ws and it was the midrange that was lacked in the cheaper model compared to these. Yet the cheaper B&W speakers is still worth the $$$. As the guy in the audio shop said these speakers are British which tend to be neutral. Well that is what I want, American and Canadian speakers are all about Bass. Where as these are like listening to high quality headphones, you get true sound. Any crap speaker can make base, I want to hear music pages turn and singers inhale. A very simple amp or receiver will do these speakers justice. My 10 yr old Sherwood sounds great on these Brit Beauties. If you are doing the home theater this then disregard this advice I haven't tested these on surround. If you are in Ottawa Canada I would say talk to the guys at Dewar's, their used speaks are worth a gaze too. Actually these aree used speakers and they still sound mint so at least I know they can handle some use.

Other Canadian speakers at Future Shop and the Sony store and they all fail large compared to these.

Strength:

Great warm sound Transparency Price Quality

Weakness:

Suggest a B&W sub to augment bass

I got 601 Series 3s a year ago and I am very pleased. These are very warm and yet precise speakers. I had some concern that they lacked transparency, but when I replaced my Nakamichi MB10 CD player with a Pioneer DVD 45A, they really opened up and I found that the lack of transparency was the result of the CD player. Anyway, I believe that there is nothing in this price range that touches these speaker. I auditioned Missions, Canton and Monitor Audio.

B&W 601 S2 - owned over 3 years. I am adding this final review because after tweeking the system around these speakers they have exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. It is also a testament that high end sound can be gotten for little money. The Sound: With numerous sources, the soundstage extends beyond the speakers (left and right) and well above (actually above ceiling on some nature sources). There seems to be no limit to the depth, it just depends on the source. Imaging is extremly good. Objects in the soundstage just hang in space, separate and distinct. Front to back layering is also very good. It isn't hard to know when a sound is behind another. Voices are full and realistc. When watching movies, you get the impression that a great deal of action is happening because positional clues are heard better than many speakers. Also the speakers do a pretty good disappearing act too. It rarely seems that the sound is coming from them. Except on poorly recorded sources, I completely forget that I am listening to a system and am only aware of the music or movie. Also the sound is HUGE! It's hard to believe that all this sound is coming from such small speakers. Well, I could go on about how good these are, but just let me say that the qualities that make these special are rarely heard in the show room. I am in no way implying that these are better than other speakers, rather that the difference between these properly set up and the setup found in stores is the difference between black and white and color, irregardless of price. I have a friend that lives 500 miles from me and everytime I visit, I drag him to all the audio stores in his area. We listened to B&Ws, Theil, Maggies, Logans, and such, but he never said much. When he came up here to visit me, he saw my speakers and was not impressed. That all changed when I played the first song. His jaw dropped and this huge smile formed across his face. He kept looking at the speakers with a puzzling look on his face. After the song, he told me that he couldn't believe what he heard. For days, he kept telling me how amazed he was with them. That was short lived, because a few days later I took him to Holm Audio (Illinois). Holm Audio has one room where they properly set up their best system. After listening to that system, he finally understood what was possible. Of course that reduced his enthusiasm for my system, but I couldn't care less that anyone is impressed with my stuff. What makes me happy is sharing the enthusiasm for audio. Oh, by the way, the wires in the system at Holms cost more than my car (new). That gives you an idea of the cost of this system. On the downside, I have heard better. Some speakers have better clairity, some have better imaging. In fact everything about these can be improved with a better system, but at what price? You can buy my entire system (used) for about $1,000 (including sub). Talk about bang for the buck. These are the lowest priced speakers I have ever owned. But the most important thing I have learned is that you don't need to spend enormous amounts of money to get great sound. I am also sure that many other people have stories about other speakers that are equally good. These are not unique, but they are one of the best buys for the money. You can add these to the list of bang for the buck systems, especially at what you can buy them used for.

Strength:

Exelent sound, amazing for 5.1 aplications where a sub is used. My suggestion, buy 4 of these and match it up with a CC6 s2.

Weakness:

Bass, what do you expect from a small speaker. Also, very long break-in time, BE PATIENT!

I can not stress this enough...BREAK THESE SPEAKERS IN! I ran mine possibly 50 hours before they came alive, and when they bloom, they shine! All the reviews of "muddy", and "flat" are most likely because of the fact that these speakers are being juged based on their out of box performance. Exelent highs, and warm mids due to that wonderful kevlar driver and the nautilus tweeter pair. I have demo'd paradigm, monitor audio, klipsch, JBL, Boston and many others and feel that for the money, these cant be beat.

Strength:

Clarity, detail, just superb sound stage and imaging. Great speaker

Weakness:

Lack of deep bass, need a sub to bolster low end response. Price/Performace ratio doesnt compare to Mission M70's, though good they are a bit expensive, spend a little more and get a lot more, spend less and get better value for money.

When i first started listening to these speakers they sounded a bit harsh but after a while i realised that this was the recording i listened to, once a high quality recording was put on i heard the clear crisp detail these speakers produced. They had beautiful highs and tigh lows, when they were coupled with a good sub they really excelled.
