Weakness:

Only Supports Atrac3

This Player is awesome in terms of sound, it sounds great eaven with files encoded at 105 kbps, the size its also a nice thing its really small and still easy to handle, the battery life its somewhat short but i dont make long trips so its ok for me. the software its ok, be sure to get version 2.0 it works on every windows except for the cd encoding on win xp, but still you can convert from mp3 files.

This Player works in Windows XP!!!, just plug it and windows load the apropiated drivers, install openmg software and the plug in software from the 2.0 software CD.

I still dont believe it worked in XP!!!, but not in win 2k sorry 2k people.

Strength:

Size and Sound quality

Weakness:

battery life, expensive media, software

First off the software sucks in terms of compatibility. If you can get arround that hurdle this is one of the coolest toys arround. In my efforts to get the software up and working I tried, windows 2000 (server and professional), Windows XP RC2, and finally windows 98. From everything that microsoft has said, the software should work under windows XP which would almost make up for sony not releasing a win 2k version, we'll have to see when the final build of XP comes out.
The software it's self isn't too bad. I'm running version 2.0 which you can download. Converting Mp3's is easy, as long as they are not variable bit rate. If so, the easiest way I've found is to convert them to wav then reimport them.
The transfer isn't too slow, although it could be faster, but since the max your going to transfer is 128Mb at the moment, it won't take all that long.
Battery life isn't bad for a device this small, but it isn't going to hack it for long trips.

For under 200 this is one of the nicest players you can buy. It isn't huge in terms of storage, but it is solid state, so it won't skip. As sony brings out bigger storage cards the price of the smaller cards should become more affordable.

Strength:

ease of use(player), small and portable, and sound quality is great!!!

Weakness:

my warranty ran out and my adapter/battery is dead, had it over 1 year. Not sure which one is the cause and i am having the toughest time getting the accessories. Sony's website sucks!!!!! Can't find anything on it. With the amount paid for it, you would think they would make it easier for us.

Get ready for a BIG headache if you need accessories!!!!

Also, you are very limited to what Operating System you can use to run the software.

Software(OpenMG) sucks!!!!! it is not very user friendly.

Overall, this product is very good, i use it everything commuting to work, workouts, and general listening....in terms of usage in a normal day, 3-5 hours; would need to charge the battery twice a day.

Sound quality is great, headphone is good quality also.

However, you are limited by the software..OpenMG. Only works with 98/98ME and that is it. Also, as noted above, you are also limited to accessories when need to replace them.

In conclusion, for $400, i would like to have my player to last more than a YEAR!!!! Figures, my warranty just ran out and it broke...good luck!!!

My review can only be very brief due to the fact that the software (open MG) was only compatable with windows 98 and nothing higher, therefore I feel the ms walkman to be a complete waste of money, as it is useless if you happen to be using windows 2000. However I am very impressed with the lightness of the player and its compactness, as for quality of sound who knows???? Well I am yet to get the higher model, which I am disapointed that I have to fork out more cash for, but hey- if you want the technology- you gotta do wat you gotta do!

Strength:

cool looking. good audio.

Weakness:

does not play mp3's but atrac-3. DOESN"T WORK WITH Win 2K!!!

Argh. My Nw-ms7 has been collecting dust for the past few months since I upgraded my box to Windows 2000 Professional. At first, it was the OpenMG Jukebox software (needed to upload songs to the player), as it was not compatible with Win2K. Finally, Sony released the upgrade software on their site as well as compatability with RealJukeBox2.0. I was pretty excited but then to my dismay found out the Nw-MS7 itself is STILL INCOMPATIBLE with WIN2K!!!! The Jukebox software installs fine but the device drivers don't install after I plug the device in the USB port. I still have one ray of hope, where I saw some website which stated that these devices need a "service upgrade" to work with Win2k and that this service can be performed at Sony Service Centers. Unfortunately, all those listed on this page were all European/Asian cities. Sigh.I'm now thinking it's Ebay time.

Strength:

Fantastic Quality.

Weakness:

Volume level low.

I was given the Memory stick walkman as a gift from my wife, who had researched it as she wanted to buy me the "best", it would appear that different people have different perceptions of "best". The sound quality is mind blowing, the styling is beautiful, the headphones hurt my ears so I bought some new sport-style Sony-Phones that wrap around the back of my head, great for running! The battery life suits me but I hate the software, which takes ages to convert from MP3 to Atrac, and the "3 checkouts and you're out" system is very restrictive! I realise the need to kerb copyright piracy but this Walkman has this distinct disadvantage over other, cheaper models.
Volume can often be confused with Noise, but we all like to hurt our eardrums now and then with a real "Anthem", don't count on this to deliver. I can put the best quality Dance anthem on, full volume and still hear my phone ringing in the next room, a MAJOR disappointment for me...I would sacrifice some of it's chrystal clear clarity for a bit more volume. Overall though, it is stunning...and everybody I know who tries it out is blown away with it, they obviously don't share my occasional love of monster volume-levels.

Transfer CD Recordings and Internet Downloads to and from PC. Removable 64MB MagicGate Memory Stick® Media provides up to 120 minutes of music enjoyment. Plays Back in ATRAC3, Supports MP3 and is upgradable to support additional audio formats.

The Sony NW-MS7 is Sony Corporations latest Walkman. This Walkman utilizes Sony’s newest proprietary the Memory Stick. In the mid-1980’s Sony of Japan was trying to make the 3.5” the de facto industry standard during a race against Hitachi Ltd. and its three-inch format. During that time another department in Sony was working on a two-inch floppy disk that would be able to hold a higher memory capacity than the 3.5”. Finally, Sony’s two-inch floppy disk was released and called the “Memory Stick”. The Walkman uses Magic Gate Memory Sticks, Memory Sticks that are copyright protected. Magic Gate Memory Sticks hold either 32 MB or 64 MB of memory. Sony Corp. is planning to release Memory Sticks that hold higher amounts of information (there is even a rumor that a 1 GB Memory Stick will be released). The downside to the Memory Stick is that it is so very expensive because Sony patented the technology, that way no other companies can produce them, therefore the Memory Stick will not become mainstream.

The Walkman is very small and has a 3-line LCD backlit display. On the left side of the Walkman there is an eject button to release the Magic Gate Memory Stick Walkman, a menu button used to access the menu to change the level of bass, volume, turn AVLS mode on/off, etc. And a display button used to check the time and switch the screen mode. Located on the right side of the Walkman is a jog dial that is used to stop, play, fast forward/rewind, pause, and change the track. There is also a hold button located directly underneath the jog dial. The Walkman has a very sleek design; it is navy blue with a lavender finish. Sony added many useful features into the Walkman, like AVLS. AVLS is used to limit the amount of volume so it is at a safe level so the user’s hearing is not damaged.

Many people complain about the OpenMG software provided with the Walkman. I personally have had no problem with the software and I am using Windows ME. The box states that the software only works on factory installed Windows 98, I have factory installed Windows 98 that has been upgraded to ME. I suggest that you DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you own a computer with a factory installed version of Windows 98. If it has been upgraded to Windows 2000 I do not think that it will work. I enjoy the software because it is easy to use and allows me to customize my tracks. Using Napster, Winamp, and/or Gnutella I can get all my songs for free and never have to pay a cent. The transfer from the song to the MP3 Player is rather speedy, it is about 30 seconds for a 3 MB file. But the download can take much longer if you transfer more than one song, I transferred 9 at one time and it took me 3 minutes. The USB is fast but the download is not immediate, so if you are not a patient person, you had better learn to be. I am using an IBM Aptiva with 850 MHz so the transfer is rather quick, if you have a slower system it may take longer but it is well worth the wait.

I like everything except for the battery life. The battery life lasts a measly 4 hours and to recharge the lithium ion battery it takes 3 hours maximum. Another con to the Memory Stick is the fact that you can only hold about one hours worth of music at the highest bit rate (132 kbps) and 2 hours at the lowest (66 kbps). The sound quality is awesome and the headphones are much better than the other ones that Sony supplies with its other Walkman. Included inside the box is: one Sony NW-MS7 Walkman, one 64 MB Magic Gate Memory Stick, headphones, AC Adapter, USB cord, carrying strap, and OpenMG software. I really enjoy this Walkman, whenever I put on my headphones I feel as if I am in a tranquil forest. If you are someone that desires awesome sound this Walkman is for you.
P.S.: I bought mine at http://go.to/etronicsonline for
only $325

i love this player it is small and a great interface w/ my comp. but the format for the audio isn't mp3 it must be converted to atrack3 with the supplied software and then the travks may be checked in and out from the same computer only so if you travel a lot and want to edit you lineup on the go make sure the base computer can come with you. other than that this is the best operating unit i've owned!!

Difficult to work with, Conversion software seems to be the problem.

Been trying to get this product to work for months. It has trashed a Dell Laptop. Software loading usually crashes the computer running Win98. I have had spotty successes along the way which keep me going. No help available from Sony. If you know how to get it working, email me at olsonda@aol.com. Beautiful dust collector! Too expensive to throw away. I'd love to make it work.
