    Strength:

Easy to use, good battery life, nice playback, good tech support, and fairly fast transfers via USB.

    Weakness:

Hard to use controls with the protective case on it, expensive memory upgrades, and very proprietary.

This was my first MP3 player and I love it! Mine had 64MBs storage, it holds about 16, 128 bitrate songs. Its super easy to use, I've only had one problem with it so far. My opinion, if your looking for your first MP3 player and don't want to spend alot of money, get this player.

    Strength:

Sound quality, portability, quality construction and design.

    Weakness:

bundled software (realjukebox) is just ok, and it doesn't even allow you to convert to WMA, which the player can use. Get dbpoweramp from download.com - it's great and it's free.

I got a refurbished rio 600 for a song on ebay. Previously I've been using a Riovolt sp100 mp3 CD player, but I found it skips a bit when exercising, so I wanted a solid state player for cheap. 32MB onboard isn't much, but when I convert to WMA, I find that I can fit 68 min. of music on it, which isn't too bad. The sound quality is good, and while the display is small, I love how informative it is.

    Strength:

sound quality, ease of use, battery life

    Weakness:

battery meter is useless and inaccurate. Joy pad is no joy, you can only use this whilst looking at it! The desktop software needs some tweeking and searching. Headphones! YUK! very uncomfortable and fiddly to put

RIO 600 I Really like this product despite some of its little faults. Its small, neat and fairly sturdy. Have dropped the unit a couple of times but no damage occured. I purchased the unit mainly to listen to audio books downloaded from the net. And i can manage to get up to 10 hours of spoken work using only the 32meg onboard. So this suits me just fine. Great price too, only £60 + £4 p&p

    Weakness:

    quality control,..rugedness

good for the fist t3 months,..i''ve bought 3, lost two, but they do degrade and fall apart after the first few months if you use them everyday...not a rugged design, but it works and gets loud enough...after 5 months it stopped working; said i had to upgrade..that sucks for a HARDWARE product

    Strength:

Stlyish, practical, can withstand being dropped and good sound quality.

    Weakness:

Standard memory is too low, battery guage is very inacurate, Rio software took some playing around with to get working.

I found this player to be pretty neat and quite stylish whilst being very practical. Since this was the last in my area from Comet I got a deal on it for roughly £99. I''d recommend buying a new pair of headphones though because the ones which come with it are uncomfortanle and too much of a hassel to wear.

    Strength:

Displays track title, lots of features, somewhat small, USB port, Firmware upgradable.

    Weakness:

Low quality, hangs PC during download, drains battery too quickly, battery gauge grossly inaccurate, lacks cheap removable media, buttons too small, Weak mechanical, poor bass, RIO has bad reputation for quality and support is below average.

The ON/OFF button fell off the first week. The RIO mgr SW hangs my computer. Initial service is really slow. I'm on my 4th player (the 1st 3 were returned).

    DOCUMENTATION

Bought this (a Rio 800) for my wife when her portable cd player broke. Don't consider myself an "early adopter" but this thing was a little frustrating until I played with it for awhile. The battery was cited as a prob in other reviews. It's not a problem. The documentation is! It must be "calibrated" several times until the Rio screen says "battery is calibrated", not just "0" minutes left to charge. After that, no problem. The first "calibration" resulted in 3hrs. of battery life; the second 5hrs., the third, 9hrs.
The Real Jukebox software works but it too takes some "playing with" to figure out how it works. Even the "HELP" info is lacking

    Strength:

Great sound quality, price, ease of use, durability

    Weakness:

    32MB standard memory

This is an excellent MP3. Albeit, my first, but nonetheless a great unit. I'm very impressed with the sound quality. From everything I've read, this is a strong point of the Rio 600, and I'd definitely agree. I really like the ID Tag information showing the name of the song being played, artist, and album. Very informative LCD display.

I purchased some Sony Extended Bass earbuds, and the sound quality really shines with these. The stock buds didn't fit my ears properly, so I bought the Sony's for $10. Good purchase.

One piece of advice when downloading music to the 600. Take advantage of the WMA 64kb recording that this player accomodates! I stumbled upon this information haphazardly, so I feel a certain "need" to pass it on to all. I first tried a WMA file at 128kb and found that the file size was actually larger than an MP3 file and the sonic difference was not noticeable. I then did my homework and found the secret! A 64kb WMA file has the same sound quality as a 128kb MP3 (Maybe not EXACTLY, but certainly 90%). Moral to this story, a 64KB WMA will sound nearly as good as your 128KB MP3's at half the size! This means one hour of music on the standard 32MB rather than a half hour with MP3 files at 129kb. Needless to say, I've converted my MP3 collection to WMA since. Side note: 64kb MP3 files sound terrible! ! ! I think Bill Gates gets a thumbs up for WMA! Another side note: why doesn't Diamond include this info with the 600???

Another great purchase I made was the 32MB backpack for the 600. I was able to land this at $36 plus shipping, and given the price I paid for the 600 ($0), I felt it was no big deal. Not only can I now store 2 hours (approx 37 songs) in WMA format now, but I can also simply plug the included charger into the bottom of the 600 when the battery runs out and believe it or not, 1-2 hours later, I'm ready to go again for 9 hours of playtime! Wouldn't want to be without this add-on! Money well spent!
