Strength:

Compact Size
Remote Control
Long Battery Life
CDs Never Skip
Leather Carrying Case
Sound Clarity

Weakness:

Extra Battery Tube Dangles

I'm really baffled as to why people are rating this product with such low ratings. I've been using my DEJ815 for 4 months and listening to it 4 hrs/day. There aren't any vices I can find for this portable CD player. My DEJ815 did skip once, but that's because I played an 80 minute CD (that I compiled and burned with my CD-R burner). Other than that occurrence, no problems.

Strength:

G-protection, long battery life, looks (which can be deceiving) good

Weakness:

sound

For the strength outlined above it's very good.

However, for the sound, this is the crappies player I've ever heard. When I used the headphone output (with my Sennheiser's HD590) it was crappy, but then I excused the player - I reckoned it wasn't designed for 120ohms, although it should have been.

Now, I just bought XcanV2 headphone amplifier and this player's RCA output is also crap. Tinny and hollow.

Sony is going downhill fast. 5 years ago, Sony name meant something (well, at least Trinitron did), now I'll be putting this brand at the bottom of my list.

Strength:

slim design, metal case, excellent remote

Weakness:

crappy headphones, skip protection not too good, broke in 8 months

This discman worked well enough for 8 months and then just quit working!! Now that it is broken, it makes a horrible grinding whirring noise when switched on & the LCD panel remains blank. I am very angry because Sony customer service is USELESS and I must pay $80 if I want to have the unit repaired. I hardly think it is worth repairing because it broke so easily in the first place. My experience w/ the skip protection was not as good as some of the other consumer reviews I have read.

I used this discman maybe once or twice a month, the rest of the time it sat on a shelf out of harm's way. However, when I did use this discman, I really enjoyed it's slim design & remote control. I miss having a discman and I'm not sure what brand or model to purchase next. I'm not sure if the Sony D-EJ815 is worth fixing or if I should just invest in a new type of portable audio technology.

One thing is for sure, if you want to spend $150+ for under 12 months of poratable music, which is $12.50 per month for 12 months, then buy the super crappy Sony D-EJ815 portable discman w/ G-protection

G-Protection, Optical/Analog Line out

At first I decided to buy this ej815 to use as my main cd player in my audio system, and its portable property is a by product, because I don't have that much money to get one cd deck and protable cd player. After I have got the unit, I tried to connect it to my a/v reciever through both analog and digital lineout, and the sound quality are almost the same to me (optical is a little bit brighter), just because I'm the beginner and/or D/A converter of the player is as the same as in a/v reciever (1 bit 8x oversampling). However, I'm able to recognized the substantial improvement of sound quality comparing with my jvc cd player. More dimemsion. The higher density of vocal and some musical equipments at the middle of the sound field is also the improvement.

One month passed away, the analog/digital ling out starts the problem. The first 2-3 second of the first track is disappeared, but the headphone output is still working well I don't really know what the problem is.
Moreover, the another weakness is the G-protection. Even I place the unit on the stable shelf. The sound sometimes skip without any vibration and magnatic field. These must be the magic of sony

However, the sound from headphone output through my panasonic headphone is somewhat good but not very satisfy due to lacking of bass.

For the rating, I'd give
2* on price/performance
4* on using headphone o/p
2* on both analog and digital lineout

Strength:

Slim design, backlit LCD display, remote.

Weakness:

Bad CD drive, battery adapter dangles, if turned on its side the CD will run against the lid of the player, it's Sony...

I don't know why I purchased this unit in the first place. Sony' reputation, product quality, and customer service, are all jokes. I don't think that Sony puts any sort of consideration into the quality of their products anymore. I think that they are only concern that their product have a nice design and color scheme to them, and the EJ-815 is a prime example of this happening. I purchased this unit and I was very impressed by its performance. Not anymore. The CD drive has crapped out on me. When trying to read the inner-most part of any CD I put into it, the CD drive will become stuck and can not read the rest of the disc because it can not move, making it virtually unusable. The headphones also stink. The bass output on the unit it good, but too strong for these headphones. At the loud volume settings, using the Mega-Bass is not recommended. The headphones will make a popping noise that is not too pleasing to the ears. Then there is also this static noise that is heard sometimes that is not too pleasing either. The ergonomics of the unit is the high point, along with its battery life(using the battery adapter), but the adapter dangles, it does not screw on or attach itself to the unit like the Panasonic units do(Panasonic makes better products in my opinion). Overall, stay away from this unit, unless you want to fork over money to Sony to fix this unit over, and over, and over, and etc...
