Weakness:

Quality of workmanship and construction

We bought 3 of these units for ours sons's birthdays. Within one month of indoor use the latch that oopens the cover reffused to work. We are unable to to use it and have not been able to contact Sony Corp.. with the number given on the warranty paper. It has been taken over by an International talk line and the other number for parts is constantly busy..

Strength:

Good sound, one of the better-looking Discmen available

Weakness:

None outstanding

This portable is very good-looking, being slim with a metallic-blue lid. The sound is very good when coupled with my Grado SR60 headphones. I use this as my secondary music system. If you are not going to use this while exercising or in a bumpy car, I recommend the following to improve the overall sound quality: 1) Turn off the ESP, which automatically turns on when you first plug in the player and press play (YUCK! ESP compresses the audio signal into memory and degrades the signal slightly); 2) Plug the player into a wall outlet or car cigarette lighter, rather than using batteries (the outlets provide more power, which increases output at the headphone jack); 3) Turn off any Mega Bass or Groove feature, which increases midbass response and adds an unnecessary bloated characteristic to the sound (it also can increase listening fatigue); 4) USE GOOD HEADPHONES!!! This is very important! Doesn't it make sense that if you spend $89 on the source of the sound (the Discman), that you should spend roughly as much on the reproduction of the sound (headphones). You'd be surprised what kind of headphones you can get for $89! In any avent, this player is quite good, and deserves consideration. It is sturdy and well-built, even though it is one of the slimmest Dismen around. Go buy one for the looks if nothing else!

Strength:

Sound! Battery life. Can recharge batteries, supports remote control, and has an optical lineout for MD's.

Weakness:

ESP doesn't survive the shakings. :)

I just had to review after reading John's review. I was rolling on the floor laughing - John (and everyone else), this discman has an option on it's back to limit the volume level so it won't damage your ears (which means a very low volume). It's a switch. I never switched it on by MISTAKE, but i guess it COULD happen.
I can't belive the replaced it for you.

Anyway, serious now - this discman has great sound, which is very important for me, and the battery lasts a LONG time. I also think the headphones are rather good for something you get with a discman, i've heard far worse.

I like it very much.

I was looking for a solution to a problem: I had to get a portable CD-player with optical digital output for MD recording. The manufacturer's succested retail prices were a bit high, but who pays those amounts anyway. At Target I found this nice machine for $99.
It has ultra slim design, MD link optical output, track loop repeat, 22 track RMP programming, up to 20 hours extended battery life and ESP2 with 40 second performance. The Discman works nicely, it is easy to use, ESP works just well (while walking), and it is loaded with nice features.

The frequency response might not be flat linear; even without bass boosts (mega bass and groove available) the music seems to have just a little too much treble. I have not been able to analyze the lower end of the frequency response as I only have my Beyerdynamic DT-111 gamma headphones with me, but there should not be any surprises, and what the hec, I bought this for portable use so that does not hurt too much.

Finishing is OK, the mechanics seems to reliable, the buttons are a bit small though, but the different functions are easy to use and the sound is OK for a CD player in this category. I got what I wanted, could I ask for more?

If you are considering this kind of machine, go ahead. Forget the Aiwas and Panasonics. This is true value for your money!

Shoddy Headphones, Stability

I bought this unit for the design and Sony's reputation with Discmen. Two weeks after using it, I play it and the sound becomes low muffled. The volume control is useless and doesn't affect it at all. It was not a battery problem. I didn't knock it around. I take it back to The Wiz. They're reluctant at first, but they exchange it. Approximately, three weeks later, I encountered the same problem. I'm considering sending it back to Sony, just as a goodbye present. I bought a Panasonic from Best Buy for $50, and it works a thousand times better.

Strength:

Good sound, good battery life.

Weakness:

Skips sometimes when I jog. The supplied Headphones.

Its a good unit, and the sounds is nice with quality headphones. It does skip some when I jog and have the player in a fanny pack, but never when walking or riding my bike.

The supplied headphones are crap, but with good phones comes good sound.

I would not recommend this player for kids, it does not stand up well to abuse. It does stand up well to normal use.
