Strength:

Anti-Shock is the best I have ever seen. Sony step down - Panasonic has got the house. This unit refuses to skip. Way to go Panasonic!

Weakness:

The headphones absolutely kill my ears. I had to replace them with a better comfortable pair. It feels like that instrument the Doctor sticks in your ear during a physical, ouch! Other then that this unit is perfect!

This is a well engineered well designed portable CD Player. I am extremely impressed with how good the anti-shock works on this unit. I have done laps around my neighborhood while holding this player in my hand and swinging my arms and It refuses to skip, not even once. The style is nice looking, sleek, and button features are great. The water resistance is excellent. I got caught jogging in the rain and the player continued to play; it didn't seem to bother it a bit. Panasonic has won me over as far as portable CD players go. I use to only buy Sony but now I will stick with Panasonic. Incidently I bought a Sony and returned it the same day because it did not work. I felt nervous about getting another and bought the Panasonic. I am really glad the Sony didn't work because now I have a great portable. When I purchased the Sony my wife said, "It's made in Malaysia." Jokingly I said, "watch it not work." It didn't, now the Panasonic player says, "Made in Japan." It works great! I guess 0 defect really means something in Japan.

A very slight disappointment compared to my old SLSW505 (which was stolen), but still an improvement in most areas and an overall excellent product. It's well built, light and small (for a shockwave model), and the VMSS function actually works better than I expected.
I do have a few nits, however. I live in New York, and use this player often on the subways, where the maximum volume of the player is not quite loud enough. My SLSW505 was much louder, and I never felt the need to turn it up all the way. I leave this player turned up all the way at all times, and it's barely enough. Second, I am a bit concerned with the fact that the electronics for the controls are located in the lid. In Panasonic's older Shockwave players, the controls themselves were in the lid, but the electronics were all in the unit itself, protected under several layers of plastic. I wonder if this model will be as water-resistant as my SLSW505 was. And third, the headphones are a bit uncomfortable and not very good sounding - not a problem with most players (my Koss PortaPros substitute nicely), but obviously using different headphones means you don't get the VMSS effect. If you really care about the best sound, go for the SLSW850 instead and substitute your own headphones. You'll save money on the VMSS feature (but you then don't have a choice in colors).

Don't take my nitpicks as a reason not to buy this model, take them more as caveats. I would still not buy any portable CD player other than a Panasonic Shockwave model.

Strength:

Extreme Bass, the VMSS is amazing
Easy to use
Remote on headphones
Never, ever skips despite daily trail running.

Weakness:

Earphones are a little uncomfortable.
A little pricey but you pay for what you get.

This is my first personal CD-Player, and will probably be my last, the thing is awesome, the VMSS makes it feel like your head is resting on a sub-woofer. It is easy to grip when running due to the strap and is probably the best product of its kind on the market

Strength:

Durable design, remote phones, anti-skip.

Weakness:

Small phones.

Over all I really love this player!! The design is cool and durable, and the VMSS is the best yet! Because I have such a big caranium I have to wear the phones around the back of my neck. However I also feel that this position gives a better effect to the VMSS by sending vibrations along the spine! I lost my manual on the first day so maybe this is the way you're suppose to wear them? Anyway I doubt I'll be buying another CD portable for many years!

Headphones

To everyone who's not experienced the VMSS feature, I stongly recommend it.
To everyone who's using the Brainshaker headphones, try the clip on types.
I've bought the clip on type headphones for my SW870 and it's so much better. The clip ons are easier to carry and provide double VMSS because it has two VMSS units in each ear. The only problem is that the connection of the wires to the ear units is not very strong, so I fear that if I pulled too hard, the wires might just come off.
Other than that, the discman works great!
No skipping whatsoever.
If you listen to loud music on the VMSS headphones for too long, it may cause ringing in your ears, but hey, it's a small price to pay.
To people who are wondering if the VMSS feature works in other discmans, the answer is yes.
I've tried connecting the VMSS headphones to 2 of my other discmans (sony, aiwa), and it still gives you the vibration, but it's not as stong and sensitive as when it was connected to the discmans with the VMSS feature.
Overall, it's a great machine to buy, and there was not a single person among all the people I've demonstrated my machine to that have not found it amazing.
By the way... to the Panasonic people. if you want to make improvements to the machine, I suggest that you guys find a way to make the headphones vibrate only to the beats and not the low bass sounds of a base guitar.

I have tried almost every discman on the market and none of them come close to the Panasonic 870. First of all the VMSS is awesome, the headphones pick up low range bass and turns it into vibration. The 40 second anti-shock is exellent and you never miss a beat. Battery life is about 26 hours and is very cool looking and lightweight if you want to jog with it. Overall before you try out the other stuff {SONY} check this out and I would say the only drawback to the discman I think is that it has no radio and is alittle pricey but you pay for what you get

Strength:

Stability,VMMS,nice looking, light weight, controls easily understood, battery life expectency(upto 25hours)

Weakness:

Very uncomfortable headphones, no other headphone takes advantage of the VMMS feature, pricey

I am thoroughly impressed with this cd-player. I was using the Sony D835k but was becoming increasingly frustrated with the skipping. Now with this unit, there may never be another skip, i literally shook hell out of the thing and it didn't miss a beat.
With the amount of time I am getting out of batteries as compared to my old SONY, I think I could recoop the added costs of going with this top end model within a couple of years at the rate my old unit chewed batteries up. I would give this unit a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for the uncomfortable headphones.

Strength:

Perfect anti-skip (hasn't skipped once), great battery life, superior sound, VMSS feature, different play modes, Line-Out, internal battery charger

Weakness:

the headphones it comes with hurt my ears after a while, expensive

Amazing portable CD player, I would recommend to anyone willing to spend the money (got mine on a boxing day sale, 30% off). The sound is great, try using different headphones if you are not satisfied with the ones it comes with. However the controls on the side of the headphones are convenient, especially when you have the unit concealed in a school bag, etc. Panasonic did a real good job on this one, nothing held back. Also one feature that is only mentioned in the manual, is the unit has the ability to charge batteries, (special type, contact panasonic support on where to get them) just put them in the battery slot and plug in the DC adapter it comes with, and presto! The batteries cost about 20-25$ canadian, so about $10 or so U.S... I havent got mine yet but i will soon. GET THIS PLAYER!!!

Power Usage.
Sound Quality.
VMSS.
Extremely Durable.

Weakness:

"Different" headphones.
Bass response at higher volume levels with VMSS enabled.

With the Anti-Shock Memory enabled, it is impossible to skip the player. I've stopped the CD with the lid open and the music will continue to play flawlessly for the full 40 seconds. It's excellent on batteries, I get approximately 27 hours for a pair of Panasonic AA batteries, plus or minus 5 hours depending on the features I've used (VMSS, Anti-Shock Memory) The VMSS feature is incredible, it adds an entire separate element to the music. The remote on the headphones is also very useful. The aluminum protector makes this unit indestructible, and the weatherproofing reinforces that trait. The headphones were "different" to get used to, but once they'd been used a few times, I didn't even feel the difference, in fact, I enjoy being able to wear a hat and my headphones at the same time. The bass response tends to distort on the higher volume levels, this depends on the type of music, however. I am extrememly impressed with my player and will continue to use it for years to come.
