I picked one up from a private owner. I had no idea what I owned. I just bought it and put it away. about two years later i decided to try it. I was not used to using tuners even though i have several of them, I just listen to my receivers because I use the components that plug into them like my turntable and CD player, and well..now my Sansui 717 tuner. i never thought of listening to it, as tuners seemed to be a hassle and extra baggage to clutter up my stereo system.

Well my Marantz 2220B (perhaps a better sounding unit)? crapped out on me so i needed to listen to something else, and i decided to clean up my stereo collection and after unpiling four other stereo pieces sitting on top of the Sansui in storage,,

I dusted it and cleaned it off and to my surprise it was as mint as the day i bought it. no scuffs dents, scratches managed to get on it surprisingly.
I'm an audiophile and i hear things most don't hear faster then others. I have whats called "golden ears'. So i plugged this in and after warm up, was surprised at its open and relaxed sound. It sounds particularly good with jazz. Its only slightly undefined in detail, but that's possible that because i live in an apt., that the other tennents using appliances take away from its sonic purity. it's very refined in warmth of music presentation. i am up listening to it in long hours of the night when i should be sleeping. It has a very relaxed quality about it. The sound is slightly thin (as opposed to being fuller), and i cant put my finger on how or why but it is. My akai 2600 is almost etched in sound by comparison. That happens to be a better sounding unit. Nevertheless the Sansui is one that is impressive and is now my current souce of radio.

it has a very smooth and relaxed sound; an open sound stage and airy music eproduction.
My best tuner or so i thought was my Kenwood kt 4005, underrated by most collectors who put their nose up at this one. I don't know why. The kenwood is a little recessed and has a smaller sound stage, but overall it has nice listening qualities. Anyway the sound of the Sansui is sweet warm and comfortable.
This Sansui is a poor mans audiophile piece and i see it rising in price among mid fi collectors because of demand. You guys always make the mistake of clucking loudly when you get a piece like this and it drives the price up too quickly.
But mine has its original papers, but not the box it came in.
i will most likely mod it for better sound no doubt. Overall a pleasant surprise to find that i purchased something that sounds this nice. i'm sure that one could buy something several times the price to get the same good sound that this offers.
Kudos to Sansui.

Strength:

Incredible performance (sensitivity), amazing sound quality, top-of-the-line build quality, beautiful cosmetics and functionality.

Weakness:

Absolutely none, nada!

Bought this off a friend of the original owner. The unit had been in storage for many years and was in almost new condition (except for a 1-inch scratch). This is an amazing tuner. As with ALL vintage electronics, it was time for a check-up at a reputable, licensed technician. After extensive research, I dropped my unit off at Stereo Surgeons in Hartford CT. Ken said it was one of the best TU-717s he'd ever seen and described the interior as "pristine." That being said, it still required almost $200 in TLC. The performance and build quality of this tuner is second to none. Ken said that dollar-for-dollar the TU-717 is simply the best there is. His sentiments are echoed by many others. If you visit www.tunerinfo.com, you can get more information on this great piece of electronics. Once I got the tuner back from Ken, it's performance was even more incredible, plus the peace of mind knowing that with his good work, plus the craftsmanship of Sansui, this piece of equipment will perform better than virtually all tuners available on the market today, regardless of price for decades to come. If you are considering one of these, BUY IT, get it serviced and you will never regret it. If I could give this 6 stars, I would.

Strength:

+ Nice soundstaging + Great, non fatiguing sound + Equipment level, especially that you have the choice of noise cancellation

Weakness:

- Slightly rolled off bass, but don't be put off by that

I bought this tuner 2 years ago. From the first second I was impressed by its appearance (especially the tuning scale is beautiful in the dark) and warm, full sound. The sound stage is very livid and three-dimensional. This unit does nothing to distract from the music. Speech is rendered very lifelike also, without booming in the middle frequency ranges. As with most FM tuners, the bass extension is not very deep. Low frequencies are there, but slightly rolled off. High frequencies are very pleasant. Listening through this tuner is never fatiguing but with the most compressed of radio stations. But who likes to listen to those anyway? This is one of the best tuners ever built. Its finish is beautiful, operation is flawless and it's equipped very well with noise cancellation on/off, muting on/off, calibration tone generator, bandwidth chooser and adjustable output level. The noise cancellation does soundstaging no good. I prefer it off, although noise is audible then with very soft classical passages. Muting doesn't harm the sound. All in all one of the few truly great High End tuners of all times! Much better than most modern slim black boxes. Generally worth its asking price (up to $350 typically with modifications, $250 without but with rack handles). To better it, expect to pay BIG money.

Strength:

Excellent reception, warm and clear detailed sound, insensitiviness to the outer sources of noise (such as: PCs, CD-players and sofisticated power supplyes of modern VCRs.

Weakness:

Undurable digital freq. counter

I bought this unit for baragain price of 150 DM and ever since I enjoy the great performance of this ancient beautiful tuner. In past, I had a lot of other tuners, and this one is here to stay at least untill I find TU-X1 (also Sansui). Combined with Sansui SC 2110 cassete deck, which is also great machine, makes a "soul" of my system based mostly of modern components. I am especially satisfied with wide and clear stereo image (on FM). The reception on AM is also exellent. Scale precision is very high so I don't bother with its only weakness (digital counter).

In fact, we are talking about TU-719 (improved version of 717 with digital frequency counter added).

Strength:

I got this more than 20 years old machine five months ago for 50 German marks (or 20 bucks). Still owning an even better but hard to find and much more expensive Sansui TU-X1 this black radio turned out to be a big surprise. Its sound and reception quality will rival today's mid to high end machines without any efforts. Try to get one, maybe in combination with the corresponding Amp AU-717, an extraordinary machine, too.

Weakness:

It's quite old and Sansui seems to be out of the business in Europe and USA, but still exists in Japan where it is a competitor to Accuphase. Quite heavy and big.

Very good sounding and receiving tuner

Strength:

Excellent selectivity and sensitivity. Very impressive specs, even compared to todays mid to high end tuners. Very reliable unit. The tuner has a volume switch to match output to other components in your system. Finally, the tuner has a calibration switch to facilitate setting recording levels.

Weakness:

Large and heavy.

I purchased this tuner new and it has provided 20+ years of trouble free operation. With an outdoor antenna, the unit is excellent at receiving week distant stations. It also has a narrow and wide band selectivity switch that helps in a city environment where many strong stations are close together on the dial. The tuner has a very nice feel to its operation. I would strongly recommend as a used unit, provided that the subject has not been abused.
