It's amazing just how good FM sounds...with a good highly directional yagi FM antenna on a Rotor...I get sonic bliss....this is one excellent tuner and has audio performance that is fantastic...it has performed perfectly for almost the year time that I have had this unit..one of the two best upgrades down to my system in 20 years...

Just replaced my 10 year old Magnium Dynalab 101 tuner with a new Magnium Dynalab Etude. Very impressed with the up-grade. Every aspect of the soung has improved. I now get better sound off the radio than I do from my Sonic Fronters CD player or my Well Tempered Classic / Benz Glider combo. After ten years of daily use (without problem) I was able to sell my 101 used for about 60% of what I paid for it. That's what I call a sound investment.

This is one of those components that lets you forget about equipment and relax and listen to MUSIC.Ah,isn't that what it's all about! Have had quite a few other tuners in house and NONE have the MUSICALITY of th Magnum/Dynalabs,and AIR!Some may pull in better, but none sound better.Haven't heard the new one yet,so go and find a dealer and BE HAPPY.http://members.tripod.com/~GRESH7/GRESHAUDIO.html

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

NONE

This is OVER priced and the damn thing DRIFTS on startup.
Then it has NO REMOTE ! Want one ? Pay another $ 1,000. !!!
Ever want to check out 7-8 stations quickly ? or often ?
Don't buy this tuner. I ended up with the Fanfare FM Tuner
for $ 1,350. WITH remote and NO drift. Better performance
and later engineering. Ever wonder why there is a new
model after the Etude ? Look at the inside of both tuners
side by side. Amazing. Get yourself a Fanfare and decide for
yourself.

Weakness:

lack of tuning "flywheel effect"

This was an NOS FT-101 I purchased direct from MD and had them do a pre-shipment Etude upgrade which contains 99% of the same components as the Etude for half the Etude's cost new. It performs quite well on my $2.00 inside dipole. I'm told I can expect significant improvement with a better antenna and good quality coax.

I note the previous reviews seem to be more objective and realistic than the hyper-adjectiving "reviewers" of some other high end electronics. Could it be that FM listeners are more "grounded" in reality?

Incidentally, the MD people couldn't have been easier and nicer to deal with. I also found this same customer orientation with the folks at Bryston, another good Canadian company.

Strength:

Mid-range;solid bass;very easy to listen to for extended periods.

Weakness:

none

If fm is a big part of your listening enjoyment then this is the tuner! I listen to a lot of classical music and King fm[Seattle];strings have never sounded so natural. The old cliche applies here: the tuner fades into the background and you become aware of just how enjoyable music can be. The big brother 102 I thought was very close to the Etude, too close to justify almost double the price,at least for me.

Strength:

Superb sound

Weakness:

Switches are not laid out logically laid. Cosmetics are bland and uninspiring.

I'd owned a Pioneer TX-9100, a Lux 5T50 (the first "good" digital tuner), and a Denon (whose model number I've forgotten). None of them ever made me think that FM was anything more than a second-class program source. Not because FM broadcasting is inherently inferior, but because FM stations rarely care to provide a clean, high-quality signal.

About eight years ago I decided to upgrade to the hi-fi system of my dreams. The Etude had received excellent reviews, so I bought it without even listening do it.

I didn't expect much when I turned it on, but I practically fell on the floor. The "squashed," unnaturally "mechanical" sound quality I was used to was gone. Even lousy rock stations (which I never listen to) sounded "good" for a change.

This is a damn fine tuner. If you don't like FM, even a brief listen is likely to change your mind.

This Tuner Is Awsome. Never thought FM stereo could sound so Good. You have to pay premium price,You will Know why when you hook it up.Very smooth Tuneing knob. Will tune weak stations in with min. noise by ajusting the quality switches it has. Strong stations are exelent with everything ajusted for Max. stereo seperation.
