i have had this tape deck for approx 5 years and can tell you it is a serious work horse. i have recorded at least 500 tapes and have never had a problem. it has dolby "s" which when using a good quality high bias tape sounds very close to compact disc. it also has the best vu meters that i have ever seen. i paid $500.00 for this unit.

Strength:

Decent build quality, 3 heads dual capstan, very good vu meters, Dolby S, good sound

Weakness:

Speed error- fast, crunches tapes

I had this deck for 90 days exactly. I then exchanged it for full refund and bought the Sony 909 deck instead. I had problems with this decks speed being fast. It also had a problem crunching tapes because of a dual capstan problem. The sound quality was quite good for a second top of the line deck. Dolby S is a big improvement in sound quality. The warranty is 5 years which proves the deck is well built. Frequency response is a little shy of the 909 deck.

Strength:

Good vlue for money, Good recordings, Easy to use, has RC.

Weakness:

Heads need frequent cleaning, Counter is inacurate, the cassette holder inner metal gets rusty

I'm using this deck since 1999. I use it with a Sanyo Supper D NR(like dbx). It's also use with Dolby B for doing
cassettes for the car and my walkman.
The deck is working fine. I use it very little, as I added a
CD recorder and an ES SONY Mini Disc.
The results from a cassette are fair to exelent.
The heads need to be very clean, otherwise the recordings
(specially CAL) are not stabil in high Freq. output.
The deck fit well with other SONY ES family, as the ESD-2000
Pre, the CDP-x505 CD.
It also takes well command from SONY's RC-2000 Remote.
