    Strength:

Really detailed, crisp and clean highs. Outstanding design. Easy as 2+2=4 to understand controls and functions. Superb sound. Well packaged. Slim Remote. Beautiful VW like panels light. Really Compact and the glossy "true" classic piano finish of both speakers. Good connectors.

    Weakness:

    Not a lot of bass.

Superb! Neat! Nice! I could put up tons of pleasant adjectives. Personally Yamaha has done a wonderfull job.
The system is foolproof! AM/FM reception is just perfect. It's really elegant for those who don't like huge sound systems but they care about how it sounds. I have it on a room of 45 square meters and it fills the whole space. The only complain is about bass, it lacks a bit on that aspect. The price I posted above includes the KX-E100 cassette deck.
Again..the best system I heard for how small it is.

    Strength:

Superb build, weight of components, 5 way binding posts!

    Weakness:

It's good, but not THAT good, expensive for a mini without a tape deck or MD, the cheap speaker wire

This system definitely sounds much better than any other mini system I have heard. It's got phenomenal build quality, the components are 'heavy', and it looks wonderful.

However, it's got a very constricted, very 'tinny' sound to it. It wasn't the speakers, as the speakers on this puppy can perform quite adequately (I even switched to Monster Speaker Cable). I was able to get great separation and a very detailed sound when I hooked it up to my Adcom GFA6000/Pioneer SP-99D combo. However, once I switched it back, it sounded much different. I am thinking it's probably somewhere in the amp section. However, it's definitely not fair as this system alone was cheaper than any component I have. Comparing it's price to a mini system though, this system was pricey for his features (even with the huge discout), as you could get a Sony system with CD/MD and a sub for a little less.

Anyway, as an "audiophile" piece, it'd be about 3 stars. But as a mini system, it's definitely a 5. Better than any Sony system, hands down.

    Strength:

Build and sound quality. The system is very attractive.

    Weakness:

I can't find a univeral remote control that will operate the system. Not a big deal because I rarely use the remote anyway.

I purchased this system at Myer-Emco's semi-annual sale. They had a couple of systems available; a Sony and the Yamaha. I had been looking for a mini-system for my living room and dining room. The Yamaha was larger than the Sony system because it had a separate receiver and CD player and the speakers looked like real component speakers. When I heard the systems, I knew the Yamaha was the one I wanted. The sound was even better when I set the system up at home. It has a very natural soundstage. I can easily imagine the where the singer(s) and musicians are. Bass is more than adequate for where I have the system. The system has a subwoofer out if you need bass reenforcement.

Yamaha has always made quality, good sounding stereo equipment. This system lives up to their high standards and has not disappointed me in the least.

    Strength:

Tight bass, sweet highs, classy looks, separate tuner and amplifier, piano finish of the speaker cabinets

    Weakness:

hard to find the MD component to the system

my old aiwa died after a long and glorious service of 8yrs. So, I wanted to get a small but nice system for my bedroom. I spent alot of time looking at different systems out. The kenwoods, JVC, Panasonic all have very flashy and cute looking systems (like speakers the shape of eggs or sticks, etc) but when you look pass the DSP, flashing lights and cuteness of the system they don't sound that good at all! There is no bass, no highs, most of the system distort at 1/3 of the max volume, meaning they would be good for an office but not for home. I went to tweeter's and fell in love with the nakamichi soundspace 5, it's beatifully designed and sounded very nice, although very little bass considering the speakers are flat. Then I listened to the denon and I was like wow, the sound is amazing. Finally, I got to the yamaha. What struck me first is that the system seemed so understated with the gloss black speaker cabinet and separate amplifier and cd player. I tried my entire car cd selection on it, on Aria the opera singer's voice was erriely life like, gave me goose bumps, then I played Mystika and NERD's lap dance, the bass pumped out of this system on those 2 songs are absolutely amazing, they never distorted even when I turned the volume way upppp! The salesman came over and told me I can't play these songs there, like whatever!!!!!!!!! And, this system doesn't even have a subwoofer, I don't think you need it with this system. Unlike some other people, I didn't find the high's screetchy at all, they were sweet esp for the song life in mono, and finally I popped some acid jazz cd's in (westcoast boogoloo), the soundstaging is amazing, you can close your eyes and hear where the instrument is supposed to be. I would definitely buy this system again. The only way you could do better is buying separate top of the line components and even then, unless you are a professional audiophile, I doubt you can hear the difference.

    Strength:

This system has EXCELLENT bass and SQ. I was suprised myself how much bass the 5 in. drivers put out and I have been a bass enthusiast for over 5 years. The highs are crisp and clean, much more so than the $200 cheap "boomboxes."

    Weakness:

Lacks a optical input on the actual receiver although the CD player has one for future upgrading. Other than that its perfect

The MCRE100SL changed my mind forever about "mini" systems. The sound isn't mini at all. I currently have it in my dorm room now at school hooked up to my computer, DVD and television. I have a cheap RCA DVD player but the audio coming out of this system is as clean as DVD players runnin up to $500. At first I didnt like the sound it produced when hooked up to my sound card but after upgrading to monster mini system cables, the bass is MUCH cleaner and theres is almost no background hiss. I'd recommend this to anyone cuz of its classy look and more importantly, the bangin SQ coming out of it.

i wanted something small and simple to use for my bedroom. ait lso needed optical output.
i was looking at different sony models when sales person directed me to this unit. i was impressed. i was not going to spend more than $300, but i went back in 30min. and bought this one.
i will be replacing my wires with monster cable as many suggested, but don't see the need for subwoofer for my use.

    Strength:

Clear sound, sturdy build, and looks better than most anything else on the market.

    Weakness:

Standard wiring sent with system needs upgrades.

While I've only had my MCR-E100 for a few weeks, it stands miles above what I was previously listening to. The CD and receiver components look well made, and are quite heavy, while the speakers present clean sound and are very classy looking. The speakers can get pretty lound too, despite only being 40 W a piece. Anyway, I got mine at a good price (w/ free shipping) and believe it does better than some other more expensive set-ups. Great for a bedroom or small apartment.

    Wonderful highs sound great.

    Weakness:

    Little deep bass.

This little system is great for the bedroom. I added a Paradigm PDR-10 sub, and it sounds great. The sub is a little too much, but I got it very cheap. Highly recommended little system.

    Strength:

Probably one of the best minisystems in this price range.

    Weakness:

    a) Initially, the system may is a bit too bright; needs some time to burn in.
    b) The interconnects and the speaker cables that come with the system prevent it from showing its true potential
    c) A bit weak on the bass for those people who like rock music, but adding a subwoofer can solve this problem.

I initially intended to purchase the Denon DM-3 which won the AudioReview.com Choice Award; however the salesperson recommended that I try the Yamaha MCR-E100.

Aesthetically, the Yamaha MCR-E100 is much better than the Denon, so I decided to give it a try. I am glad that I did so because the Yamaha is also superior sonically. The sound was more clear and rich, and it gave better sense of space.

When I got home and tried my new system, I was a bit disappointed because the sound was slightly harsh and on the bright side. I found out later that as I let it burn in, the harshness slowly disappeared, but I was still not truly satisfied with the system because I felt that the sound lacked some detail that is present in high-end audio systems.

After reading the article in audioreview.com on speaker cables, I decided to upgrade the interconnects and the speaker cables into Monster Cable, hoping that it can solve my problem. After the upgrade, I was amazed at the improvement in quality. The sound is now much richer, the bass is tighter and the brightness is totally gone. I can also hear details on my CD that I never knew existed before ... on one of my classical CD, I can now hear the sound of the musicians breathing!

To summarize, this system is one of the best for the price range, but if you are willing to spend a bit more to upgrade the interconnects and the speaker cables, this system can easily match other high-end systems 4 or 5 times its price. I totally recommend this system to anyone who is looking for a top quality minisystem.
