Strength:

Good clean sound, with plenty of strong bass. Good looks for a mini-system.

Weakness:

Very bottom bass lacking. Grilles diminish highs somewhat, but this is cured by removing the grilles.

recently I decdided to move from the Bay Area, and into a smaller environment, and wanted to downsize my rather large stereo system. I went shopping for a smaller, less "involved" system. I listened to many of the mini-systems on the market. Some were good but expensive, most looked like they escaped from the holo-deck of the starship enterprise, NOT my cup of tea, and sounded mediocre, with prices all over the scale. When I first turned on the C870, I was immediately impressed with it's clean, wide sound, and it's strong low clean bass. I found myself coming back time and again to listen to this system. I will not fill a very large room, but does put out high quality sound at low to moderate levels. It has all the normal "trick" sound enhancing programs as in most other mini-systems. (Which I do not use after listening to it for some time. I generally leave it in the optimal (Basically flat) mode, with the Woox in level 3) This system puts out a very big, clean sound front. Much larger than it's size would indicate. The front grilles do diminish the treble somewhat though. The manual says the bass reponse only goes down to 60 hz, but it seems much lower in actuallity. Bass can be felt from across the room! Only the bottom octave seems to be missing. It does have an output for a self-powered sub woofer. The rated power output is 300 watts. (150 per channel) Much higher than any other system I tried. I have only seen 2 of these systems in stores, both at Good Guys, and I bought one! A very handsome unit with it's blond wood speaker cabinets, and chrome faced front panel. The display is somewhat gaudy, but not nearly a bad as most others, and it can be turned off. I consider this system to be one of the "best-of-the-best' of the mini-systems.
