Strength:

All in one design, Great sound at reasonable volumes (remember this is on your night stand), Aux input, great FM reception.

Weakness:

CD motor can be heard, it is a very faint sound but it can be heard. More cables than expected. Display is brighter than needed.

This is a great product when used for what it is designed for (a bedroom radio). I bought it on a whim when I was shopping for a home theater and saw it in the store. I have connected it to my bedroom TV (with DVD and VCR) via the Aux input to create a mini-theater.

The double clock-radio function works great as my spouse and I get up 45 minutes apart.

Check it out.

Strength:

Paramount design, Great sound, Low relative cost

I just got this unit yesterday and I cannot believe what I have been missing! There are a few cables to run between the three units, but I don't spend too much time under my bed, so I am not really worried about that. The dimmed displays were not any brighter than my old alarm clock. You can even turn one of the displays off completely if you only want one clock.

The sound is better than any clock radio I've heard, and the price beats the pants off the competition. One word describes the design: SEXY.

There is no documentation on it, but this unit support Radio Data Systems (RDS) which allows the unit to display the station names on the display (i.e. 'FM-WGBH') for participating radio stations.

I love it!

Strength:

looks great, good sound (esp. crisp highs), remote control,

Weakness:

lots of wires, distortion at higher volumes,

To be honest, I was a little bit skeptical about buying the SoundSpace 3 after reading some of the reviews below. But after listening to it and a little bit of tweaking, I'm not disappointed. I picked up a refurbished unit from UBid.com and it looks and plays like new. I think the key to the SoundSpace 3 is tweaking the audio controls. Out of the box it sounded terrible, but after playing with the positioning of the units and the audio settings, it sounded a hundred times better. I am especially impressed with the crisp highs; especially when listening to acoustic and jazz music. The fullness of the bass is definately adequate. The low end sound does distors when you crank the volume but, after all this IS a clock radio. At a moderate level the sound is great; it really fills the room.

In regards to the complaints about the noisy cd spinner and the volume jump at low levels, I don't have any problem with mine. It sounds like it is possible that Nakamichi may have fixed the glitches on the newer units.

The setup wasn't too difficult. Again, the most important thing with the SoundSpace is playing with the bass and treble until you find the right levels for your setup. It can really sound terrible if you don't have them set right. It might take playing with it for a few minutes and sampling a few cds to get it, but its worth it and what are toys for anyway?

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone willing to spend a decent chunk of cash for a great alarm clock.

Strength:

good remote, alarm, loudness switch, small size

Weakness:

cables (too many, too short), tinny sound, display, fm reception

Please be warned: what follows will be negative comments

This system was displayed very nicely at the store, hiding the large number of cables as well as the huge power supply box, making it look a lot more attractive than it actually is. The 3 boxes are designed pretty nicely though.

As I assembled the unit, it turned out that it came with an extremely thick "system control cable," about 13 ft long only, which can't and shouldn't be extended according to the manufacturer. (I called them and they told me they received a ton of complaints for the SS 5 for the exact same reason, and finally managed to extend the data cable for that model. Why they didn't change the engineering on this one is beyond me.) This didn't quite allow me to place the main and companion units where I wanted them (i.e., it didn't reach from one nightstand to the floor and under the bed, up the other nightstand).

FM reception was pretty weak, even with the supplied wire antenna (couldn't pull in a local jazz station clearly), but the sound quality was enjoyable (thanks to the subwoofer, mostly), and OK for this price range, although with an unimpressive bass. The nasty surprise came as I put a piano sonata into the CD player, and turned the volume to 35 (out of 50), causing some rather ugly distortion. Listening to the same track with my Sennheiser HD-580 plugged into the SS 3 (and the volume turned to max), the sound was crystal clear, so I figured I just bought a nice CD player with pretty weak speakers. Note: if the speakers had produced a similar sound to the headphones through most of the volume range, this would be an excellent product.

Another nuisance is the display, which dims according to light conditions in the room, but is too bright even when it's dimmed -- bright enough to cast shadows, in fact. Not my idea of mood lighting.

I'm taking it back and will probably exchange it for a TEAC Reference 100 or a similar model.

Strength:

Huge sound, good looks, many inputs dual alarm, feature packed, great craftsmanship and quality.

Weakness:

Wires are a tad cumbersome

This is the best alarm clock I have ever had! Definatly a must for any level of music listening. It blows the Wave Radio right out of the water especially once you factor in that the Cd version of the bose cost about twice as much As what I paid. Bass is more than adequite on this little unit with dedicated sub. Spend five minutes tweaking sound levels and youll have a great system. So many features its amazing. Looks great too. Nakamichi really hit the spot with this unit!

FYI
Do not buy from cyberteria.com, as they made me wait 9 days for my unit to arrive from MASS. I live in PA peaople.

Strength:

This is the coolest looking mini stereo system/clock radio on the market. The sound is excellent, FM reception is ver good and the controls are easy to navigate

Weakness:

price

If you are willing to fork out $300 for a mini system whether it's for the office or your bedroom the Soundspace 3 will not dissapoint. Not only is it pleasing to the eye but for a system so compact it gives out great sound. The separate mini subwoofer adds decent bass. I use it as a stero clock radio/CD in my bedroom. It features multi alarms so you can set it to wake up to radio or CD and also specify the exact track you would like to play when the alarm goes off. It has fairly simple controls and a nicely designed remote. It also has dual digital clocks so you can have one on each side of your bed.

Strength:

Rockin style, decent sound, ease of use

Weakness:

Number of cables, volume jump at low end

After years of using having two clocks, one ofr an alarm and one for a decent radio and a portable cd player by my bedside I saw the Sound Space 3. At first glance it looked like the perfect combination of all three in a tiny and stylish set-up. After reading all of the reviews I bought my own and was pleasantly surprised.
The system oozes style. While the sound can't compete with my Onkyo system it sure beats a portable CD player with plug in speakers. In addition it cleaned out a lot of clutter by the bed which combined with the styled wooed my girlfriend no end. The alarm features are spectacular. The rising volume beats any alarm I had before that simply jolted me awake. In addition, I can wake up to a CD in the same way. The CD mechanism is a bit loud, but with different placement, this can be reduced substantially in the listening area. Subwoofer placement is critical with this little system. So many midrange tones are sent its way that it needs to be centrally located for the best sound. The only downfalls I've found are the number of cables and the volume jump between 0 and 1.
If you're looking for true audiophile sound, this isn't the radio for you. If you want the absolutely coolest bedside radio/cd player around and can deal with hiding a few cables this is the one for you.

Strength:

Dual Alarm Clocks

Weakness:

Tinny, sound

I generally do not like to bash a product, especially because everyone here before me actually liked this product. In fact, that is why I bought it. However, the purpose of this forum is to help people make decisions..right?

I wanted this system to sound great. The price was right, the size was right, the appearance was right, the features were right. Unfortuneatly, Nakamici forgot who their audience is.

This system sounds only marginally better than a decent clock radio. I have a Henry Kloss Table radio (Bose rip off with CD pp $329) that absolutely tears the Soundspace to shreds.

Don't buy this system blind. Demo it at a Sharper Image or somewhere else and you will see what I am talking about. Also, look at the back of each unit, there must be a half a dozen cables required to wire this thing.

Very Disappointing!
