Looking for a mini system to use as a kitchen eating area system, I went to 6th avenue electronics and of course they had all the big, gaudy rediculous shelf systems with all the bells, whistles, and xbass buttons you could ever want, Ugly, silly stuff for the wretched underbelly of the audio buying community, then, there is this little nothing 1 piece silver thing with two little speakers attached. I went prepared and took out my standard speaker test song, Rush's "Closer to the heart", Geddy Lee bangs away at his bass guitar after the first part of the song, so I use it as a good bass tester. Well this Denon system embarrassed the hell out of me. When I put my cd in and turned the volume to a respectable level, the sound that came out of this thing made the whole area of the store stop, (I am not kidding) and look at me and the Denon. This was the most unbelievably great sounding little nothing thing you ever heard. All the homies listening to rap on the big ugly shelfers all stopped, the salesmen stopped, 3 people walked right over to see what I was doing. Nuff said. This thing is great for desktop, small room, office. etc.
Definitely worth a look, Blew away everything else in the place.

I just came back from a couple of audio stores, and sampled several systems. This system is the best mini-system I have found. It is crisp and clear and has pretty good base. I looked at systems from JVC, Pioneer, Phillips, Panasonic, etc, but for the price range nothing matched the Denon's smoothness. I must add, however, I also tested the D-M5 and the D-M10. The D-M5 seems to use the same speakers as the D-M3, just puts out a little more power and can carry 3 CDs. The D-M10, however is in a completely different class (I wish I had the extra money for that one.) So my advice is if you have the money get the D-M10, if not, like me, you can get the D-M3, which is the best in its class.

I just put a DM-3 in my office for casual listening, but the sound quality was so good, I could not help myself from adding a Denon DMD-M10 mini disk and a Boston PV-400 subwoofer. Wow, it just sounds amazing, for a mini system. Now I have to keep my door closed all the time so I can crank the mini sound into a giant sound.

I bought the Denon DM3 system and I connected it with my Rogers ls3/5a and with Grado 60 headphones. This system works very well, in a little room of 2,5 x 3 metres. Denon DM3 allows the speakers (well-know for this characteristic) to shape a wide image (compared to the dimensions of the room, obviously) and reproduce good depth and dynamics. With the Grado, the reproduction looks like a radiography (I am a surgeon!)of the record. Highly Recommended.

Listen up those who want a second system in your bedroom. The choice in mind would be having a mini or microsystem. I just got my hand in the Denon DM-3, and they are great. A CD receiver with a 20 watt (at 6-ohms) output that allows you add a tape deck and/or a MD recorder. The price? well real cheap (depends on the place there it is about S$400, in UK it is 300pounds, but the quality of speakers are a hell lot better) considering the CD player quality (16bits/44.1kHz), a good am/fm tuner and a high quality amp.
QUALITY IN SOUND

- it is great when u play acoustic/classical music, as the soundstage is clear allowing a you to hear the placement of the instruments.

- pop music is a breeze for this system, as the treble is sweet and the mid-range is well balanced.

- low-range bass is not quite up to standard, as the speakers are too small, so those who like rock or hardcore, should be aware. There is a subwoofer output , allowimg a single active subwoofer connection, i would advice rockers to get one, it will really give a headache to even the most deaftone rockers (plus u can still hear the vocals and the screeching sounds of the guitar very vividly)

CONCLUSION

A good buy, for the classic or rock listener. althought the remote could be better (you will find out why) and basic bass/treble controls from the previos DM-7 would be a hell better than the 4 mode equilizer control. But the price and quality of built would justify all the five stars/speakers it had earned

Strength:

Good sound and adequate power for its compact size. Love the vocals (esp. female).

Weakness:

Yet to find. But classic music on it seems not very impressive.

***NOTE: This is for DM-30, supposedly a successor of DM-3.

I went out to buy this highly acclaimed DM-3 last weekend from a Denon dealer here. They told me D-M3(as called here in Europe) is discontinued and is replaced by D-M30. (I checked Denon Europe's website, it's true). And they comes as standalone unit instead of a package with Mission speakers. D-M30 cost US$337 itself.

Anyway, they also has B&W 302 on sale (US$154 a pair) so asked to hook them togather and listened with my CDs, blues, pop, dance. And I'm quite amazed at the clarity and power of this little silverish beauty, kind of love in the first sight. I'm no audiophile so I might be easily overwhelmed but I did compare it with other much expensive stuff in the shop and it stacks well considering its size and price.

Also I noticed some small changes over D-M3, although the spec looks quite similar:

1) There is now a pause button on the remote (model number RC-877) for CD playback. Although the remote is still not the most intuitive kind, I can do everything on the remote now, well, except eject the CD-tray. There is still no mute button.

2) The tone control is improved. There is no pre-setting any more, you can choose: source direct (no tone control), bass adjust, treble adjust, and Super Dynamic Bass (SDB).

3) The front cover layout is different.

Maybe I should start a new listing for D-M30... But need to play with it more to have a overall feeling.

Strength:

The sound is quite good for a small unit. Both the CD and the tuner section provide good sound for the money

Weakness:

The CD transport stopped working after about 1 year (after waranty had expired). I had that fixed and about 1 month later the left channel blew out. Reliability obviously is an issue.

Too much of a chance of the unit failing. I would wait until the company gets its act together about reliabiltiy before buying.

Two good companies combined to make a mini system, one of the best mini systems you can get. Although there is no such thing as a high-end mini system, and although I don't give it five stars for performance, you can't beat the price.

Strength:

The speakers are damn good, quality stuff. And sound that comes out is hot.

Weakness:

The remote controll is pants(what arse designed it), it is too big and heafty. There is no pause button which really ****'* me off.

It is pretty talented. The sound that it pumps out of those speakers is brilliant, I would recommend it to anyone, if they have £200 to spend. Overall it is the dogs ********
