I purchased this as a replacement for my Toshiba M781 which broke. The M785
is the current version of this model. First off, I could not help but compare the two models. The M785 is smaller and lighter then the M785. The remote control also shrunk. It will take me a while to compare the picture quality due to differences in tape quality, but my first impression was that the colors were
off a bit, and the picture was not as sharp. I was also disappointed at
the functioning of the reverse feature on the remote control. The M781 reversed
quickly and easily, while the M785 seems to pause awkwardly for a few seconds to perform some processing before handling the chore. Overall, it seems the quality of Toshiba's top of the line VHS model has declined in an effort to
reduce costs.

I was excited about purchasing the M785. Although I found the remote to be bulky, a two button push to set the channel to set to record was uncomfortable, had to switch off the 19u head on several tapes the VCR had problems tracking on playback, the problem seemed to be the tapes themselves they were recorded in SLP mode, some problems with still, and slow motion effects in SLP mode. One other thing that was a pain is setting up to record after midnight you have to setup manually. The tuner is not the greatest but it's adequate.
It was a breeze to setup, the unit is light compared to other VCR's I've had, enjoyed the DNR, and color enhancement feature on older tapes. All in all I fell for the hype, but the remote seems to work most everthing I've hooked it up too, and the picture is decent, and I haven't seen anything in the price range of $200.00 that had more or did more, unless you goto Super VHS.
