Strength:

Video Quality, Price

Weakness:

remote, programming

My quick take on the 765 is pretty good video, although I don't know how it compares to the 785. I bought this unit primarily on price (134 delivered) to replace a Sony unit I had for about 6 years. Terrible programming functions and timer, but I use this 99% for playback. I haven't seen any of the green stripe problems of other reviews. I'll give it 5 stars value because of the price I got it for, overall is 4 based on my usage of mostly playback. For those who record a lot, it would probably be 2 or 3....

As a comment to the green line problem; when I took the box back for the 765 that I returned, I spoke with the dealer, and here's the beef.

The green line is caused by "cochanneling", and can be fixed by a simple capacitor addition to the circuits inside the box. Apparently, Toshiba chose to cut costs and eliminate that capacitor.

I would recommend that if you buy this unit, you get it from someone who can service it in-house so that you can get the guy fixed if you get the green line problem

Strength:

The remote control, is the first one I ever owned that actually controls everything but the stereo rec.
the sound is outstanding I used a brand new copy of APOCALYPSE NOW to test the quality of product. it passed with flying colors.
recording of DSS, no problem. recording of regular tv as long as you have reception the picture and sound will be very good, in this case I tape the three stooges marathon of the local station not carry by DTV; the black and white was sharp.
The users manual was "user friendly",

Weakness:

None that I have discover

I am happy AS A clam with this vcr, I always wanted something that was beyond the typical vcr, I wanted STEREO AND SIX HEADS or more, but when i saw the prices on the high end vcrs I was out of the game($500.00) this was in the 300.00 when it first came out, as luck would have it just before the four day weekend the good guys had a clearence sale and the m765 was 129.99 +tax, mine was 160.+ with a 1 year extended wnty. I now look foward to the 785 or higher for christmast

Strength:

NADA!

Weakness:

Green line, poor picture & sound, Toshiba servce centers and Toshiba phone represenatives

Overall the worst purchase in a year of $7000+ worth of A/V purchases.

The picture is in unremarkable. 6 heads?? Whatever I can't tell any difference and the Magnavox is 4 years old.

Sound is muffled and dead.

Forget recording. There will be a large green band on the screen if you ever want to watch what you recorded and if you want to take it in to the Toshiba service center, they will keep the VCR for two months and think you're weird because you didn't wait to hear back from them.

I hope my case was not represenative of most but given the good products being put out by ither manufacturers I will not be ourchasing from Toshiba AGAIN!!

Strength:

Good picture, nice sound, attractive case, multiple shuttle speeds, XDS/Auto Clock, Nice sounding mechanicals

Weakness:

Annoying green bar on any tape on left side of the screen, only 6 events in timer, kludgy remote, goofy ergonomics.

Good picture. Disappointing ergonomics (have to hit display to see clock/channel, two keys to record or use timer, and misplaced menu keys)

Paid $199.95

Very disappointing from the perspective that I tried multiple tapes to get the same green line on the left of the screen.

When I took the VCR and tapes back to the dealer, they were not only able to duplicate the problem on my deck, BUT ALSO ON THE TWO DISPLAY DECKS!

Go figure. Fortunately, the dealer I bought from was really wonderful and is looking into the problem.

I wound up buying a M-785, which for the $30 more gave me a much better picture and got rid of the green line.

Strength:

None that I was able to find, I had the VCR for only one evening.

Weakness:

Nasty green line on left hand side of the screen, visable on all tapes tried (8 pre-recored and 3 home videos), seems to be an issue Toshiba needs to address.
The remote and programming menu options, the remote is cluggie, and not user friendly, the programming menus are about as bad.

Other than the green line in the picture and the horrible remote control and programming menus, nothing else can be said.

If you overlook the green line and concentrate on the picture the VCR provides on playback, you will find as I did, a 6 head machine is no better than a good 4 head. I was very disappointed in the picture quality and the VCR as an over all package.

Either move up to the M785 or pass on this line completely.

Strength:

None that I could find, except price less than $150 delivered.

Weakness:

Ghastly setup with my cable box. Picture no better than my 15 yo Mitsubishi. Onscreen info would not disappear while viewing tapes or watching TV. Sound only fair at best. And a varuety of other problems.

I cannot recommend this product to anyone, especially if you have to use a cable box. The set up procedure is cumbersome at best (and I am an avid reader of manuals). The manual is of little help, it pretty much only repeats the onscreen prompts. I am in the process of returning this unit (bought it on the net). I have decided to force tune my old Mitsu (doesn't recognize year 2000) untl something better comes along. Am spending the money on a new DVD player instead.
If tis product did all the things it claims to do in the brochure it would be a great VCR. Shame on Toshiba for putting out such a defect riden product.
