Strength:

Good picture, all the basic features.

Weakness:

Records intermittantly.

After 14 years my JVC mono VCR gave up the ghost. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could get a stereo VCR for about 1/3 of what I paid in 1986. I picked the Sony somewhat arbitrarily. Watched a lot of movies but didn't record much in the first 3 months (the length of the labor warranty). Once the new TV season got underway, I started recording regularly, only to find that sometimes it records fine and sometimes I get only hash. I have reviewed the manual and followed the directions but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Since I'm past the labor warranty, if I choose to get it fixed, I'll have to pay the labor. That sucks. I see in the current Consumer Reports that the Sonys are rated near the tops in performance but near the bottom in reliability. I'd have to agree and recommend anyone buying this VCR get the extended warranty.
