Strength:

Ease of use

Weakness:

No S Video output

I've had this model for about 3 years and have found it to be a great product. I used it for taping movies and shows and then showing movies I either rented or bought. It's been 100% reliable, typical of Sony's reliabilty. The only feature I would have liked is a S Video output but now that I've got DVD and really only use the VCR for occasional recording it's not really an issue.

I've had this VCR at least two years and thought it was about time to post a review. This has been the WORST VCR I have ever owned. It only came with a 90 day warranty to begin with. During the warranty period I had to take it back to the store because the picture stopped. All I got was snow! The dealer said they cleaned the heads and the problem went away. Well it did for about two months. From then on the picture was awful. It continues to be "wavy" randomly. I've had it cleaned and I clean it myself as well. After it was professionally cleaned it the picture was great for about 2 weeks. Then "wavy" again. I have NEVER had this problem with any other VCRs. I can't stand it and neither can my wife. Today I another Mitsubishi VCR. My previous Mitsubishi is 15 years old and still going strong. I've ALWAYS had problems with SONY products and won't buy any more of their junk!

Strength:

low price, it was a close out

Weakness:

poor sound reproduction, poor customer service with warrenty repairs

This unit was the worst VCR I have used in terms of sound reporduction. There were constant drop outs and background noise. Sony said it was my tapes but they play fine on any other equiptment I used them in. Also three weeks after the warranty expired the gears in the transport mechanism cracked and broke. I was unable to contact a live person at the local Sony repair center in Kansas City as they don't staff the phones, there is only taped messages. After driving 35 miles to the center they informed me it would cost 150.00 to repair and 160.00 machine. Considering it only played about 50 or 60 tapes in the year I had it, it was one expensive piece of work.

Weakness:

weak video playback

ok what is up with this vcr. whenever it shows the previews for other movies it gets all distorted and u have to ffw to the movie. and whenever u ffw the picture gets messed up when playing it for like three seconds. i also noticed that when u watch it through av outputs the sound doesnt sound so good but when listening through rf it sounds alot better. i recomend sony's higher models

Strength:

Very Flexiable Controls

Weakness:

No s-video

I also noticed a wavy picture from this unit, I called Sony about it and they told me that the sharpness on my TV was turned up too high. I lowered it to alittle above mid level and noticed a dramatic difference. This is one of the best VCRs I've owned and I have owned alot including NEC, Sharp, Toshiba, and Panisonic. The menus are wonderful giving you more control over the picture then a typical VCR.
