Strength:

Excellent Picture quality

Weakness:

Very Poor Reliability

I bought this VCR around January 2000. In the first month I didn't notice any problem. I was very impressed with the picture quality of this VCR.
However, after I was using it for about 1-2 months, I began to notice that many of my Maxell S-VHS tapes are damaged. At first I thought it was the tapes that cause the problem but I swiched to Fuji and TDK S-VHS tapes and the beginning of the tapes are still damaged. It creases the beginning the tapes if I FF or REW tapes. After it damaged about dozens of my S-VHS tapes. I then relialized that this VCR is CRAP.
I took it to the JVC service center and took them about a month to try to fix it. They replaced several tape transport parts and after I got the VCR back from them. I noticed that the tape transport of this VCR was very noisy. I took it back to the service center again. They replaced the tape transport parts again. It seemed to be fine but after I had used it for about 1-2 month it began creasing tapes again. Now the warranty is out, so I guess have to live with this crappy VCR. And I dont' think that they can fix this VCR because the problem does not always happen. Sometime it occurs, sometime it works fine.
I think JVC quality control and reliability are very terrible.
I will never buy JVC products again.

S-VHS ET

Weakness:

S-VHS

This unit is going back to Crutchfield. Problem in SP mode
on VHS and S-VHS; images near bottom flicker. Not a bad
unit and really liked the S-VHS ET mode, but unit seems
to inject more noise and garbage into picture than my
165$ Panasonic 9661.

Strength:

S-VHS ET,remote with jog-shuttle,picture quality,picture quality,and picture quality.

Weakness:

There is so much options on this vcr that it's almost confusing.

I don't have much thing to say about this vcr but except for the hight price,it's by far,and i mean far,the best vcr i ever saw and had.Plug in s-vhs,the picture quality is so outstanding that my old video tapes look almost like my dvd movies.

Altough that my toshiba 6heads was one of the best vcr out there,it doesn't even come close to the JVC in therme of picture definition.

My only complaint is there is almost too much option for my needs.Like timescan audio, audio insert, second audio, commercial advance,or things like that that i will never need cause this vcr only serv me as playback vcr,and some times record programs.

Defenitly the best vcr there that exist.

Strength:

On new tapes, the video is excellent.

Weakness:

On tapes played more than once, my VCR cannot track well. Constant video/audio problems.

I really wanted this VCR to work. I saved. I shopped for the best price. It would have been a nice piece to add to all the other AV stuff I bought. However, after having it for about 9 months, I gotta say I hate this frigging VCR. The problems started with tapes that USED to play in my old sony just fine, played like crap on this thing. I tried every combination of buttons/menu options, and still it played like crap. I posted some questions on the web, and most people responded with the problem being the "take up hub" had too much torque. Took it in to get it fixed and, of course, the technician couldn't find a problem. This has been sooo irritating. I have tons of tapes that play fine on cheaper VCRs. Maybe I got a bad VCR, but I don't want it anymore. Sony next time. Seriously.

Time base corrector

Weakness:

Won't track all my old tapes

Good feature-laden S-VHS with fantastic picture quality.
On a few old VHS tapes it can not track properly.
The pause control is not precise enough for quality editing,
BUT you can access the audio in slo mo so you don't miss any cuts.
This is a great VCR at a decent price, but don't buy it for editing purposes.
Plays rented movies like a champ AND you can set it to skip over all the previews!
