I just picked this unit up and am amazed by how much better the picture quality is over the Sony HF770 it replaced. Front S-video input is a big plus. Open box at Circuit City for $249 and the mananger saw me looking at it and knocked off another $20. A great buy for $229.

Just picked up this unit at Circuit City for $299.95. I think that's a good price for a nice piece of gear. The remote is easy to use. I wish I had a PBS station that sends time signals so I could check out the auto clock set feature. No more "blinking 12:00" :-)

also got this at circuit city for 299audio is great through my processor ( parasound)
video through svhs cable is as good as i have ever seen on video
not quiet and not fast (rewind and/or fast forward) are its only weaknesses
but those are design for efficiency and longevity i am sure
like this replacement svhs vcr alot my last one was jvc and the play head may have a crack or? ...it won't clear up a streak in the middle..i can only move it up and down and thicken it?

I have both the 7500 and the newer 4600. The 7500 looks a little nicer, has a differnt features but the 4600 picture and sound is every bit as good. The 4600 was under 300, the 7500 was under 500. The 4600 adds front SVHS input which the 7500 doesn't have. The SVHS-ET function works very well. I highly recommend the 4600.

Now for JVC.....

Why no VCR/TV button on the VCR?

Got this as a miss marked open box item at an unbelievable price of $97.00. Would have like to have gotten the 7600U as it has a 3d YC comb filter but not for 250 more. :) at this price it cant be beat.

Strength:

Low Price, Front Panel SVHS

Weakness:

Grainy Picture quality in EP, Tracking Problems on VHS tapes

For the price, this is a nice machine, but overall I was disappointed in this model. I did not think the recording quality was that impressive for SVHS - There seemed to be a lot of "noise" in the picture, even using SVHS tapes.

Also I had many problems with tracking on VHS tapes that other VCRs play with no problems. The main problem was static in the HiFi audio track. Picture quality was fine.

I ended up returning this unit and getting the 7600u. With the time based correction it has a much nicer playback quality. The recording quality seems to be better as well.

I had this unit for over two weeks now, and think it is by far the best vcr for under $300. btw, I bought it at $249 dilivered over the web. S-Video playback is absolutely wonderful, even the cable channels look much better if connected through svideo. I guess it has a better comb filter than my sony tv. Have not tried all those editing feature yet, therefore my rating does not cover that part and may change later. SVHS recording quality is very good. In fact, copying from dvd in normal sp speed is better than the same movie released on vhs tape. In ep speed, image quality is not as good, you can definitely see the difference, but it's still better than vhs sp recording. You get what you ask for.
The only thing I don't like is the noisy motor, it's a bit too loud. If you turn up the audio or sit away from the TV (vcr atually), it wouldn't be a problem. But I have a small living room and often have to turn down the audio so that my baby can sleep in the bedroom. All in all, I would give this a 4.5 stars if I can.

Strength:

Great Picture and Tape Transport

Weakness:

No "RF Converter Off", No SVHS loop through, and no support for Hughes Satellite Systems.

I had both 4600U and Mitsubishi 775 for comparison. The JVC's picture is much more stable and much better color saturation than the Mitsubishi's. The JVC did not make vertical lines wavy, as the Mitsubishi did when reviewing a scene with a bookcase. The tape transport is also much better on the JVC. On the Mitsubishi, when loading the tape, many times it went in crooked and I got the "E2" error, which remained on persistently. The Mitsubishi looks and feels cheap, especially when compared to the JVC.

Howerver, for features the Mitsubishi 775 wins. It has a SVHS pass through that allows you to connect your satellite or other SVHS connection to the input, and pass the signal through when the VCR is off. Another nice feature the Mitsubishi has that the JVC doesn't is you can turn your RF Convertor off. This means that when you press play on the VCR, it doesn't automatically output the VCR signal on your RF output. This comes in handy for people with Picture in Picture, when you only use your RCA/SVHS jacks to watch the VCR or set programs in the PIP. The Rewind speed on the Mitsubishi is fantastic also, but the JVC is not too shabby either. I give 4.4 stars to JVC, only because of the features shortcomings, which every top player should include. I give the Mitsubishi 775 3 stars becasue of the poor tape transport and so-so picture quality.

P.S. JVC's provided connectors are always too short, I have a rear projection TV and had to use other longer ones.
