Casual Listener

Strength:

Fast enough for 'casual' use; Accesses most sites properly--Reliablity, Reliability, reliability!!!

Weakness:

Not very fast sometimes; can't do or go some places computers can; sometimes(as w/AVs site)it will all be squashed over on the side of the screen as if formatted to print--an annoyance.

First off let me clarify a couple of things:
(or maybe just one as I fell off my bike yesterday & I'm a bit 'out of it'--well, that's TODAYS excuse, anyway!)
Dec. 1999 is the year it was made & may not be the model year.

Also I really don't believe this unit lists at $200.00 -sounds more like a plus unit.
I can't reliably remember even where or when I got this(ok: 3 things...)but I've enjoyed it & it's made me poor bidding on online auctions & given me a 'house'(apt.)full of stuff I probaby don't need.(lots of bike clothing & audio equipment--well, can't have too much of THAT!)

However that's not this nice little Webtv units fault: I just happened to find a lot of incredible deals online.

Sure I'd like a real computer for more speed
but I don't envy their reliability.

One can hook up a printer to this (int150 'classic')model however I haven't done so due to financial constraints.(this would be a good idea for printing out coupons & important things)

If you want to be able to hook up a camcorder to it (to load up pics for online auctions for example)
you may need the 'plus' model which is more expensive & costs more monthly(about $25.00 as opposed to the $21.95 I pay for the service) but you also get a tv tuner w/pip & a vcr+ type capabilty & tv listing guide I believe.
I'm sorry about the length--I'm just hoping nothing will go awry & I'll lose all of my 'work' here.(as sometimes happens w/this unit &/or this particular site--but some of my reviews have come up: see my Samsung 27" tv! -great one for webtv by the way as it's got a nice clear picture & good picture controls to make or easier on the eyes webtving...)I'm the only one writing about this as of yet, so I want to include as much info as possible.
One does get 6 mailboxes for yourself & your roommates & webless friends & in my case a neighbor.(&/or aliases or whatever!)w/the service.
You'll definately wish to get a wireless keyboard as the cheesy on screen one gets super tedious fast.(these can be had for a song on ebay or $50.00 at CC; also the units themselves can be gotten cheap there but as I say: be careful!!--note return policies & think about how you'd feel if after waiting for this thing for days & spending a day trying to make it work before having to box the thing back up & send it back losing your postage & hoping the seller is as good as his word--not pleasant)

The upgrade (plus)unit also as pip w/the tv picture & some interactivity: I would not upgrade except for wanting to sell some stuff: this wee thing has been a real boon to me. It is also more portable than the bigger plus units: one can whip it right out & toss it(well it's solid state--won't hurt it...!--just kidding about the 'throwing' part)into ones backpack & bike it over to a friends house to show them something.

I'm using an upgrade 'Monster' (I hate to admit, after reading some of the reviews here)phone cable but it looks slick...-don't know if it performs any better...however the s-video really does make a difference if your tv can accomodate that.(clearer; -easier on the eyes for extended viewing)

(Int150) will shut off & let your phone calls come thru' if you have call waiting.(& if you want it to)Remember to set it up for that, tho' as I spent my 1st three days online 'incommunicado' thinking: 'gee, I usually get more phone calls than this...!)

Lets see: it also has nice audio & will play various musical selections &/or it's own little 'bleeps' & clicks that tell you when you've clicked on something or whatever(well at least this won't get rejected for being less than 50 words long!)but I just listen to Pacifica or NPR as that stuff gets old after a while & anyway I'm a news 'junkie'.(tho' sometimes I miss audio confirmation of what I've done & thus have to look up more often)

Note: wireless keyboard is not 'perfect' either: as I write this I'm having to go back periodically & correct typos not (all)
of my own making due to the signal(infra red?)not always making it to it's 'target'
however by trying different placing I've found it works best way up on top of my 'monitor' which(I'm going to be upset if this review won't load!)is on top of a pretty tall stand & that atop a turntable...
Sort of neat: there is a code for One For Alls 'Cinema 7' universal remote conrol(but only for the Sony ones?)so I made a 'macro' which turns on the Webtv box, my receiver,(JVC 6008; -cheesy but works...)my vcr.(which the s-cable is sent thru' for a minimum of cable-swapping--a JVC HR-3500u--cranks!)& the mighty, mighty Samsung so all I have to do is press one button(assumung the receiver is set up for it already but with the remotes advanced codes I'm hoping it'll do that too)& grab my keyboard.

If you can get a model that can accomodate a 'hard wired' keyboard you'll probably appreciate it.

Well that's all I can think of presently.

Here goes an hour or sos work..

Happy Surfing!(& bicycling-but don't try to ride over those wee raised plastic dots on the road sideways when it's wet out on slicks!)

Similar Products Used:

A DOA Webtv plus unit I just had to send back to ebay 'as is' seller so I'll lose $20.00 in shipping costs if I ever see my money again at all(-beware!)
