Sony DAV S500 DVD Home Theater in a Box

DESCRIPTION

Sony introduces its easy all in one approach to home theater. The DAV-S500 comes with a full complement of matched home theater speakers: 2-way satellites for the main left and right channels, full-range satellites for center and surround, plus a separate subwoofer. The subwoofer and satellites are so compact, you'll barely even notice them; but fire up a DVD movie, and you'll experience clean, spacious, room-filling sound. For setup simplicity, the complete DAV-S500 system arrives in a single box. Thoughtful touches like color-coded speaker connectors mean you'll have the system up and running in about 30 minutes!

Strength:

Good DVD sound, compact

Weakness:

Very poor CD and radio sound.

I was looking for a good home theater system and wanted to replace my actual old sound system. So i bought the DAV-S500. It has all i wanted: radio, CD and DVD player. It was easy to install and setup. I then played the Matrix and was pleased with the image and sound.

Tought i made a good deal until i tried the radio and a CD. It sounded dull. No highs and to much mids. I tought: no problems, i'll add some highs and lower the mids. I found that it's not possible to adjust the sound!!!

The system returned where it came from.

Strength:

Easy set-up. Great sound for a 40-watt speaker system. Outstanding DVD picture. Used in conjunction with Sony 53" projection TV.

Weakness:

FM/AM radio reception with supplied antennas. The remote is not nearly as practical as the DAV-S300. No capabiliy to adjust speakers when in use. I was mislead by the statement in the contents description which said it had S-video with cable. What it turned out to be was S-video capability but it was supplied with a standard RCA-type video cable.

I originally saw the DAV-S500 set up on display in the store, but they were temporarily out of stock, so I elected to buy the S300 because I was assured it was essentially the same as the S500, except with less power and $100 cheaper. Having a fairly small family room, I assumed it would be sufficient. However, after setting it up at home, I was disappointed in the sound output, even though the DVD picture was outstanding. I called the store and told them of my dissatisfaction and they said to bring it back and trade it up to the S500 which they now had in stock. That's what I did and I have been very pleased with my decision. The improvement in the sound quality and output was well worth the extra $100. I highly recommend this sytem for the person who wants a great home theater setup without spending thousands of dollars and wants a user friendly system.

I originally bought the DAV-S300, which is essentially identical with the DAV-S500 except it has only 25-watt speakers.
