Strength:

Excellent Color Quality and VG to EXC overall pict. quality.
Plays CDRs. Audio quality is VG from analogue output on DVD and EXC from CD(but you must try different cables to get quality sound). Built in D.D. decoder gave clear sound and excellent separation(I ran the outputs of the 5 channels to 3 separate integrated amps and receivers; I cannot confirm how good it would sound into a 5 channel input of a D.D. ready receiver). Remote was handsize and fairly easy to use.
Has jog shuttle for scanning that was convenient. Seems to track very well on DVD and CD.

Weakness:

Tried optical output on Yamaha 2095 system. Sound quality lacked dynamics and impact. Actually worthless sound in this mode. The coaxial output was not tried; will try at a later date. Optical out of Pioneers 414 and 525 put this player to shame. No bass management for internal 5.1 decoder. Sub out was untested. Master volume control on 5.1 menu lowered audio of 2 channel analogue output along with 5 channel output. The 2 channel output should not have been effected by this control on menu. Spatializer is worthless in performance. Display of info on disc playing is not contrasted enough to read on screen.

I need to do some more testing. This unit is very adequate for use in ProLogic two channel mode. Cd sound quality from two channel mode was better than Pioneers. DVD sound quality from two channel mode about equal to Pioneers. It does not make sense why optical output delivered such dead D.D. sound to Yamaha 2095, although there was no distortion.

Although a light weighted player like most, this unit seemed to feel well constructed. The unit was given a rather good review on etown some time ago. I find the color and image quality from discs to be lifelike with rich but not overdone color saturation. One good test is to take Stargate and look at the color of the desert sand. The Magnavox 815 had the sand tinted green. No other player above I tried gave that kind of display.

I need to test coax output on Yama. 2095 system. The Pioneers sound better with optical rather than coaxial; the Zenith MIGHT be the reverse.

While not the perfect machine, for my use it does OK. I hate to read reviews on a product where people who have legitmate problems are not treated properly under warranty.
I would think that the last thing a company would want is somebody complaining about their handling of problems or of making a product which a number of people buy and fail to perform properly. That shows poor quality control and engineering which is inexcusable.

This product is made in Korea. The remote can only operate vcrs made by LG. At least it tells me Samsung did not make this unit whose engineers need a bigger boot in the behind.

I will post a follow-up on coax cable connection in the future

Strength:

Cannot comment because, since I bought it 2 months ago, it has not worked properly!

Weakness:

Company backing, reliability.

I purchased this unit in June of 2000, to date (August, 2000)I have yet to be able to use it. It arrived from Ubid not working. I contacted the company, they sent UPS to pick it up- Great. # weeks later- no DVD. Finally it comes, I unpack it and it plays but the picture is extremely poor. Checking with the new customer service site online, it says to take it to a local servicer- that I do. Another week and no DVD player- I call the repair shop, they haven't even looked at it yet. I call the service phone number and get a message that I wil be called back. The Zenith rep starts the conversation with "Send use a copy of your receipt and we'll buy it back from you." What piss poor service! Next, upon further insepction, I find out the unit that was sent to me from Zenith is a DVC2250. To my knowledge this is a set down from the 2300 I paid for. To date I am waiting for a call from a supervisor to figure out what is going on. I was offered no type of compensation (a free DVD or two would've been nice) and still am in limbo. From the other reviews, it sounds like if you get a working model, you're going to enjoy it, but watch out if it doesn't work right. My advice- STAY AWAY FROM ALL ZENITH PRODUCTS!!! They don't stand behind them!

Strength:

see my review posted last month

Weakness:

none now! See previous review then return here for the follow up

Okay, last month I railed against this player because it did not play dual layer DVDs. I was also quite angry with Zenith for being unresponsive to my e-mail complaints. I am glad I posted here because someone saw my review and advised me to call a vp at Zenith directly. I did that and he put me in touch with the manager of customer service. A box was sent out two days later for me to send back my player postage paid (UPS 2nd day air!). I sent in the player and got it back a little over a week later also by UPS 2nd day Air. I played a dual layer disc on it...it works great! There was a note inside that they had upgraded it and tested it. Well, they must have done both, because I have no complaints! If you can get one of these players, please do so! If you have a problem with dual layer discs, don;t waste time with the customer service hotline or the website e-mail. Call Zenith's v.p. directly.

Strength:

It is the best avalible DVD player, at least for how much it costs. Has DTS, Dolby Digital and any thing else that you could possibly want audio wise in a DVD player. It has Coxial outputs "S" video, composite video, and a really neat remote controle.

Weakness:

For some reason it is not that expensive and it may have cheap parts with it.

it plain and simply is the only DVD player that should ever be made.

Strength:

Great Price, very good remote, plays CD-R's

Weakness:

Zenith reputation

I bought this player as a second player and because it plays CD-R's. I got it for around $180.00 on ubid.com. I expected not to like it very well, but thought it would serve it's purpose as a low-cost second player. As it turns out, I'm very impressed with it and like it better than my Toshiba. I tried nearly every disc I own, and have yet to encounter a problem. The remote is fantastic (especially when compared to the absolutely terrible remote for the Toshiba). While I don't pretend to be an audiophile or videophile, picture and sound quality are every bit as good as the Toshiba. If you can get your hands on one for under $200.00, I'd recommend it highly.

Strength:

This is a good unit, and the price (can be found for less than $200) makes it a great bargin. Sound and picture quality are excellent, at least by my standards. Built in Dolby decoding and analog 5.1 outputs interfaced with my current home theater setup without hassel.

This player is my entry into the world of DVD. The connectivity this unit allows (optical and coax audio out, plus analog 5.1 dolby outputs, as well as component, composite, and s-video out) is excellent and will allow this unit to remain useful as I invest in better auido and video equipment. I'm sure there are better players out there (for a premium price), but so far I have had no complaints with this unit. Sound quality is excellent, and video quality is also very good. I will never watch a movie on VHS again.
