This unit is, by far, one of the best single-disc DVD players on the market today. The build quality of Yamaha electronics is second to none. One of the amazing things about this unit is that it was able to play a badly scratched DVD that I was unable to play on FOUR other DVD players. Those units would start to play it and would freeze up or stop completely when they got to the scratched part of the disc. The Yamaha, however, played the entire disc without any problems at all. I would highly recommend this unit to anybody who appreciates quality craftsmanship and superior reliability. This may be the only DVD player you'll ever need to buy!

Strength:

Very good picture

Weakness:

The remote must be pointed directly at DVD player to work; as previously mentioned, it takes forever to open & close; delay in response to commands, whether they be from the remote or directly on the machine; always turns on subtitles; perhaps the most frustrating feature - most DVD players will mark your DVD at the location where you stop watching/or when you go to switch menu options, this DVD player will do it SOMETIMES... Drives me nuts as I am the type of person who will watch movies in pieces...

Overall, this is a disapointing piece of equipment. While the picture is very good, the features are not. Compulsive buy to match with my Yamaha 3300 reciever...

Sony & Toshiba, all very good. I do believe that Toshiba does make DVD players for Yamaha... Surprised at the poor control this unit exhibits...

Strength:

Great picture and sound quality. Unbelievable price

Weakness:

Same unknown skipping problem with two different players. Operates very slow.

As much as I love my Yamaha receiver and other Yamaha products, I've got to say stay away from this one. First one I took home kept skipping, very subtle but noticeable. Only a one or two second skip. This happened on at least six different DVDs I played, some of which were brand new and would happen about four to five times during a movie. That aint right, so I took it back and exchanged for same player. Got it home, same problem. I haven’t taken the player back yet but think I will get a refund and try a different one this time. I also didn’t like how slow the disc tray open and closes. Everything about this player seems to run at its own pace. You turn it on, gota wait five or six seconds before it will accept any other commands. Then push the eject button, wait another five or six seconds. Don’t make the mistake of pushing the eject button again or it will skip eject command and you gota start over. Maybe I’m just overly critical but it annoys me. This player is not without some positive features though. On screen commands are easy to use. Picture and sound is great and the price is unbelievable. If it weren’t for the skipping, Id be more than happy, but same problem with two players makes me a little cautious. I summery I would not recomend this product due to the skipping problem. If you do decide to give it a try, make sure you live close to the store you purchase it from in case you gota take it back too. I live about two and a half hours away so needless to say returning it has been an all day adventure.
